With a grin, Sam pressed the red button on the bottom of the screen, and watched as the missiles were launched. Three spears of white metal flew up into the air, moving at thousands of miles per hour. They were quickly out of sight, and Sam watched as the missile tubes slowly started to fill up again. It was done in a strange way however, with the missiles forming out of thin air, with the bases forming first.
As a result, all that Sam could see were small specks of white at the bottom of the tubes. Sam nodded once at Ava, and then ran back towards the walls. Time would tell if the missiles had any effect on the enemies. They would reach them in about fifteen minutes anyway, so whatever happened, it would be over shortly.
Sam ran back towards the walls, where his support was needed. He was getting whiplash from the constant shifting around of battlefield objectives, which was an unfortunate side effect of high level battles. They happened much more quickly than a normal battle would. For example, in the history of Old Earth, many battles lasted for upwards of five or six hours, or in some cases, entire days. This one was only reaching that level because it was a series of non stop battles that exhausted the resolve of the defenders. Not everyone had the near limitless stamina and mana of Sam, and the defenders were quickly tapping out. At this rate, there would be nobody left to defend the city.
In addition, many of the automatons had been destroyed now, turned into heaps of scrap metal. It was sad to see them go, but Sam knew that more would be made soon anyway. Even now, the automaton barracks were pumping out soldiers to replace those lost in the battle. However, they would barely make a difference against thousands of F Rank fighters that were besieging the city. If not for the effects of the two fields that Sam had purchased, the ones that buffed allies and debuffed enemies, the city would have probably fallen by now. Those effects allowed the defenders to just barely keep up with the attackers, but the death rates were only increasing as time went on.
Already Sam could see a few defenders lying prone on the streets, with pools of blood expanding outwards from them. Sam gritted his teeth and avoided the bodies, instead leaping up to the top of the walls. Dozens of monsters were now on the walls, slowly but surely pushing back the defenders. Their sole saving grace right now was that the walls were too narrow for the monsters to fully occupy, and the defenders were making the creatures pay in blood for their advancements.
Sam quickly joined the fray, tearing into the monsters with his hammer. He blasted Legion members off the wall with each mighty blow, sending them crashing down into the lava below, like some alternate version of the legend of Icarus. The monsters were flying too close to the sun, in this case, Sam, and were burning for their transgressions.
Before Sam could bolster his ego with this inane comparison any more, a new challenger arrived. One of the Swords of the Legion, recognizable from their oversized weapon and massive form, landed in front of Sam, grinning from ear to ear. Sam looked around the walls quickly, fearing that more were arriving, but luckily this one seemed to be the only challenger.

Before the creature could say a word, Sam blasted power into himself and his hammer, causing himself to glow. Pushing off the ground, he cracked the stone beneath his feet, and catapulted himself into the waiting monsters. He used Girdings of the Arbiter to propel himself around the monster’s next strike, narrowly avoiding the heavy warhammer that the creature used.
He slammed his hammer into the monster’s gut like a meteor, discharging his power into it. There was an explosion of red light, and the Legion Sword was blasted off the wall and into the air. It landed heavily on the ground, and glared up at Sam, opening its mouth wide. An orb of dark energy started to form in it, and Sam ducked just as a beam of power scorched the air above his head. There was a light pop as a cavitation bubble formed and collapsed within the span of a second, which blew dust around Sam’s feet.
The Legion Sword leaped up onto the wall once more, with a large wound in its gut clearly visible. Sam was glad for the fact that none of the Legion Swords used armor. The monster swung its weapoon once more, and Sam blocked with his hammer, grinning widely as he found that he was able to withstand the force. The Legion Sword frowned, and therefore missed the kick that Sam leveled at its torso. He unbalanced the monster with ease, and drove his hammer’s head into a newly opened weak spot, pushing the creature back. He was a different man to when he had fought the first Legion Sword in China, and he could now fight on an equal level with them.
Sam cocked his hammer back, and swung, using the newly cleared space to his advantage. Even without any sort of enhancements, the attack hit hard, slamming into the monster’s head. Bones broke and blood splattered over the ground. The Legion Sword was strong and fast, but it was uncoordinated, and lacked any sort of martial skill beyond basic mastery of its weapon. Even though it was likely a bit more powerful than Sam, even with his level ups and bonuses since he had fought with the Legion Sword in China, he was leagues ahead of in terms of martial skill, and it was showing.
His skill did not manifest itself in flashy motions like with Eduardo, but rather as a simple increase to his proprioception, making it so that his weapon was one with him, He could extend his senses all the way to the end of his hammer, and he knew just where to strike for maximum impact. In addition, he could now predict his enemies’ moves, and as long as they did not try to obfuscate them. Seeing as this Legion Sword was completely unskilled, it was child's play for him to deduce its movements.
The creature snarled in rage, starting to lose its temper at how hard it was finding it to defeat Sam, someone more than twenty levels weaker than it. Sam welcomed this rage, as it would allow for him to capitalize on the monster's distraction, and therefore get some good hits in.
He took his hammer back from its extended position, and walloped the monster with it again as it recovered from the previous blow. Sam danced backwards as the monster swung with its hammer towards him, and he dodged the blow successfully, sending in a return punch with his left hand. The blow staggered the monster, and he raised his hammer above his head, filing it with power. Bringing it down on the monster, he accelerated at the last minute, successfully judging its reaction speed.
The attack blasted its head apart in a shower of grayish gore, and the monster fell backwards off the wall. Sam gained a level from the kill, and he rejoiced at the feeling. There was nothing better than killing a strong opponent in an honest fight, especially if that opponent was nominally stronger than you. It really did wonders for one’s ego.
