Chapter 389

The monster drew nearer and nearer, seeming to grow in strength once more. It seemed to be able to go through some sort of conceptual phase change, drawing upon the nature of the sun to rise once more. However, it was likely that this was an ability that could only be used once. Sam watched grimly as a massive beam of light shot out from between the monster’s palms, having gathered there in the blink of an eye.

“You will burn before the might of the sun!” The Titan bellowed, its voice echoing across the land.

The beam of light crossed the distance between the monster and the wall in the blink of an eye, impacting the force field. A wave of force spread across the dome, and the impact almost shattered it. However, the shield actually held this time.

Sam held his hammer up high and used his aura to bolster his allies with his Dao energy, causing them to explode into motion, reloading their weapons with speed beyond their level. All the while, roiling power was gathering within Sam’s core, ready to be unleashed when the time was right. A shuddering boom rang out across the city as the Crystalline Devastator fired, sending a lance of power towards the Solar Titan, just as it was in the process of firing another beam. The strike took it straight in the mouth, blasting through its radiant head. Veins of purple briefly spread outwards as the elemental energy contained within the strike radiated into the Titan’s body, but a moment later, the blinding light of the sun erased it from existence, revealing the Titan standing tall once more. Its energy attack had been interrupted however, and it now gazed towards the city with hatred blazing in its eyes. With a roar, the monster leaped forwards, its weightless form allowing it to move far further than a creature of that size should have been able to.

As it ascended into the sky, Sam was reminded of the sun itself, always cresting the horizon, no matter how long the night was. Some sort of Dao pressure pushed down on him, trying to force him to bow before the primal majesty of the celestial body that humanity had worshiped for most of their history. Instead, he summoned his own power, and roared his challenge loudly across the gap.

A small army of Dao wraiths formed on the ground below the wall, racing towards the Titan. His newest skill was a strange one, but it was still useful in its own right. It would buy previous time for the city to recover. The wraiths rushed the Titan as it fell, and were able to reach its feet upon impact. Unlike what would have happened if one of the other Titans had landed, the impact did not shake the ground. Instead, a wave of pure light erupted outwards, leveling the ground for miles in every direction. The shield trembled as the impact shook it to its very core, but held once more. With the combined force of the city’s mana reserves, multiplied many times over by the upgraded shield matrix, it was able to stand up to almost any relatively powerful attack at this point.

All the while, the artillery kept firing, even as the mana cannon reloaded. Soon it would be ready to fire again. One of the annoying parts about the Solar Titan was that injuries that it suffered did not show. It was almost impossible to tell how much damage had been dealt to it, save for a dimming in its glow. Even then, that was not a good indicator of damage.

The captains were rushing to the defense of the city as Sam watched, sending their own attacks rushing after the city’s. However, they were individually too weak to do anything significant. Sam saw Addas working a massive ritual circle in the air above his head, blending multiple tarot cards together. A moment later, a huge demon formed on the plain outside the city, easily two hundred feet tall. Its body rippled with muscle, but Sam could tell that it was no match for the Titan. It looked like a mouse scurrying around beneath the Titan’s feet.

However, every little bit counted in terms of the defense of the city. There could never be too much power after all. The summon raced towards the Solar Titan’s legs, fighting against the heat that was pouring off the massive monster in waves. The demon was naturally resistant to the heat however, and it was able to get close enough to strike.

In between waves of artillery fire, Sam watched as it drove its massive war ax into the monster’s ankle. A spray of golden fire erupted out as the weapon sunk home, and the Titan roared. Its massive fist came down, atomizing the demon in an instant, the heat too much for even the fire resistant monster to bear. As the ashes drifted away on the wind, the Titan laughed.

“You seek to trap me, ensnare me here. Your pathetic ruse to drag me into a conflict that I could not hope to win. However, I will exact my toll in corpses, piled in the thousands!”

With those ominous words, the Titan opened its cavernous maw, beginning to build up a massive attack. Sam swore and looked back at the center of the city, praying that the upgraded mana cannon could recharge in time. As the massive metal contraption started to glow with power, the Titan reared back its head and loosed the attack. The cannon fired a few seconds later, but it was too late.

The ball of light slammed into the forcefield, detonating a moment later. There was a shattering noise, and the shield broke, scattering into thin air. The spear of energy from the mana cannon surged through, slamming into the Titan’s head once more. However, after it recovered from the initial blast, it seemed not to care.

With a roar of triumph, the Titan bounded forwards, battered, but not out of the fight. Sam realized that the time to strike was now. This Titan was more dangerous within the city than the Corpse Titan had been, given its immense heat. All of the weaker citizens would be flash fried by the heat in an instant, and even some of the stronger ones would quickly succumb. Only Sam, Talnor, Rax and Pyotr would have a chance of standing against the Titan without using any sort of abilities to bolster their durability.
