Chapter 508

The weapon spun as it exited the monster, and landed firmly in Sam’s hand. The Avatar turned to Sam, half mad with rage and pain, and opened its jaws until they let out cracking noises. Then a wave of flame, hot enough to melt a mountain range, exploded outwards. Sam saw some of the weaker E Rankers below crisping into statues of ash, but there was nothing he could do about it.

Instead, he teleported desperately away from the wave of fire, feeling it licking at his armored boots. The heat was tremendous, and for miles around, the air simply disappeared, fueling the fire. Had he not been an E Ranker, he would have no way to breathe. As it was, there simply was no need.

The monster followed him with its fiery breath, threatening doom with every turn of its head. Sam’s skin began to roast once more, barely having had time to repair itself from the last barrage. He cursed, and then spotted salvation. He teleported, but not along his previous track. Instead, he appeared next to the Avatar of the Volcano’s head, right in the area that it couldn’t reach with its own flame. It was still shielded with obsidian, but it was the part of the monster that Sam had already devastated. With nothing below it, the armor was far less durable than before.

Seeing that Sam was gone, the monster cut off the stream of flames, and tried to bat him out of the air with its snout. At this point, the creature was completely ignoring the efforts of the other fighters to damage it, instead focusing all of its attention on Sam.

Even though the Overlord and Glakassa were doing serious damage to its unguarded flesh, it was not enough to be fatal any time soon. Right now, Sam was the biggest threat.

The Avatar of the Volcano reared up on its hind legs, and extended the full length of its bulk into the air. Then it came crashing down, its feet encased in bulbs of molten rock. As they descended, the monster’s feet took on the aspect of meteors, hissing through the air at many times the speed of sound. A sudden maelstrom of heated gas began to swirl around the monster, centered on its gaping maw. Sam found himself drifting towards the creature at an ever increasing rate as the suction ramped up, pulling him towards the descending feet.

He tried to teleport, but a wave of Dao energy pulsed through the swirling morass of air, preventing him from escaping its pull. Just looking at the power that was contained within the falling meteors that were the beast’s feet, he knew that he would die as soon as they touched him.

The other E Rankers seemed to have reached a similar conclusion, and they scattered. Those who could teleport made as much distance between themselves and the monster as they could. Sam had no such option, at the center of the vortex of air and Dao energy that sought to convey him to his doom.

Instead of attempting to futilely flee, he gathered his potency into himself to the best of his ability, creating a bombshell of power around himself. Rather than teleport, he let the momentum of the vortex take him in towards the monster, his hammer outstretched. The monster let out a roar, but Sam remained undaunted. Either he succeeded here, or he died. There was no other option.

His power spiraled around himself more and more the faster he went, until he was the center of a spear of light a dozen feet in length. It was like he had become a missile, cutting through the air. His speed continued to increase, until he had accelerated to immense velocities. All of this occurred over a few seconds, but by the end, he was going fast enough to escape Earth’s orbit. Jets of Dao energy extended from his feet, creating a trail of red and blue that scorched its way across the sky.

At the very limits of Sam’s perception, he made contact with his target, his eyes straining to keep up with his momentum. The tip of his Dao rocket blasted through the monster’s flesh, slamming directly into the center of its torso.

It screeched in agony as its flesh was blown to shreds, but continued regardless, its feet on an unerring path towards Sam. He pulsed his power, but for the first time, it failed him. All of his energy had been used up in his desperate flight, leaving him largely defenseless now. His drill of coruscating light continued to slide into the monster’s steely scales, but it was too little, too late.

Sam planted his feet against a scale, trying to force himself away from the rampaging monstrosity. It felt like he was trying to deadlift a house. Perhaps it was possible for his strength, but he certainly had no chance at jumping while doing so. It seemed to him that this was the end. There was only one more slice of hope, which, in his current state, could prove to be as deadly as waiting for the flaming death above to hit him.

Reality around and within him fractured, and beams of pure energy transfixed his body, sending pulses of rhythmic power through his entire being. His final skill, Dao Juggernaut, had been called upon. Coupled with his Perfect Ascension, he was likely pushing five thousand times human strength, if not more. It was enough power to uproot century old trees and bring down buildings with a single punch, but here, it was barely enough to make a difference.
