Chapter 505

With the sight of the two men fearlessly fighting the beast so much stronger than almost everyone in the Tower, the other fighters charged in, albeit a bit apprehensively. For most, those not on the Challenge Mode track, they only had to place moderately well, which meant that they would be less enthused to fight on the front lines of a battle far beyond them.

Sam paid no heed to the cowardice or lack thereof of his tentative allies, instead focusing on powering through the incoming attack. His hammer was the locus of power between the two competing attacks and he started to leverage its various abilities to their fullest potential. The weapon slowly started to descend, as inexorable as a meteor crashing down to a planet’s all too vulnerable surface.

Sam grinned slightly, even as his skin charred beneath his armor. Had he not been equipped with such a superior set of protective wear, he would have been in a far more dire position. He likely would have still lived, but it would have been intensely painful. Compared to what could have been, the feeling of his flesh crisping and frying was nothing.

Ever since entering E Rank, Sam had noticed a marked decrease in the amount that pain bothered him. Either it was a byproduct of not having nerves or nocioreceptors, or because of the fact that damage was essentially distributed across his body, diluting the pain he felt.

He thought about this as he fell, but it was at the back of his mind. Most of his concentration was used up on maintaining the weave of energy that was preventing a catastrophic backlash of power from his attack. All of the energy was focused downwards, ready to impact the reptilian monster below.

Eventually, the creature ran out of elemental energy, and the wave of flames dissipated into the air. Sam suddenly plummeted downwards, his hammer at the center of a cataclysmic aggregation of immense potency. The monster opened its jaws wide, seeking to envelop Sam within its crushing bite. However, it was too late.

Sam’s hammer struck the monster directly on the snout, loosing the full power of its charge onto the creature. There was a flash of white light and a wave of noise as loud as a nuclear bomb detonating. The creature beneath him was sent hurtling down into the ground, the stone beneath it shredded into dust from the sheer power.

The entire front part of its head fell off, and its bones cracked and crunched beneath the force of the strike. Its scales peeled off its body from the shockwave of energy released by the hammer’s descent. As it fell, the rest of the E Rankers pounced, barraging the monster with their projectile skills. An entire volcano came into being beneath the beast, and erupted within the span of a second. Flesh melted beneath the deluge of molten rock, but still the creature drew breath. It was far from beaten.

Sam teleported away from the sudden eruption of energy that came from the clash between the monster and the incoming projectiles. He watched as what looked like an entire fireworks show detonated on its body, sending it further into the ground. Explosions of multicolored light signaled the triggering of skills that would have leveled small towns or even cities. Against the immensely powerful boss monster, they did little but annoy it.

Slowly but surely, the beast levered itself out of the hole in the ground, its eyes set on Sam. Rage filled its expression, accentuated by the ruin that its face had been reduced to. With a sudden flick of its tail, it erupted forth, accelerating to immense speeds in the blink of an eye. Sam froze for a moment, not expecting such velocity from the massive beast. However, it was a high E Rank existence. Had it not been so large, its speed would have been truly frightening.

The air itself seemed to crack open before its charge, the sound of something that must have weighed hundreds of tons breaking the sound barrier. Sam watched as it approached, barreling towards him without a care for the host of E Rankers milling around beneath it. It took more damage for its trouble, but it was so minor compared to how powerful it was that it continued regardless.

Stone cracked apart beneath its steps, great geysers of semi-liquid rock erupting forth as it channeled its elemental potency into the world around it. Dao energy sparked and flared around it, empowering its body. A suit of armor made from obsidian as dark as night coalesced around its form, appearing out of thin air. Noticeably, the armor modeled itself around the creature’s normal form, without the massive divot carved out of its face.

Sam gathered his power for another round, but before he could engage, Glakassa made her play. Three pieces of metal etched with glowing runes flew through the air, looking like grains of dust beside the massive beast. They struck home a moment later. Even though Glakassa was a mage, she still had quite the arm on her, the benefit of E Rank strength. In the Multiverse, there truly was no such thing as a glass cannon. Such beings inevitably died before long.

With the grating noise of an iceberg carving through an unwitting ship, the three metal plates detonated, and pillars of glacial ice exploded forth, skewering the monster between them. The suit of armor it had donned grated, but ultimately held. Before it could react, the icebergs started to dig into its flesh, sending tendrils of frigid power through holes in the armor. So dense was the elemental energy surrounding the ice that it almost seemed to be something of a higher realm of existence, rather than mere frozen water. Sam knew that it would harm even him if he touched it, despite the fact that his supreme durability should have rendered him immune to almost all ranges of extreme cold.
