Chapter 307

Back in the obsidian tunnels

Sam battered his way through the lava eels, finding them to be more of a challenge than he had expected, especially in a large group. They could draw power out from the lava itself, healing minor wounds and empowering themselves, which made them a pain to deal with. However, Sam eventually defeated them all, netting him another level. As he stood there, he decided that it was finally time to check on his stat sheet.

There were quite a few improvements across the board, as well as an absolutely massive stock of free points. All of his resources were over three thousand now, and he had enough points in the tank to take any of them over the edge to 4000. However, he decided to wait until he had a larger stock, or sufficient need, to use them. Judging by his current performance, he had no need to add any more stat points to his stats.

Besides, he was working hard under Gordanus to eke out his inner strength, and adding too much more would throw his efforts off. Sam closed his stat sheet, and continued through the cave, bypassing the lava pool. He could probably survive it now, without much injury, but there was no need to test fate. He already was confident enough in his abilities. He did not need to test them futilely.

Sam headed towards the exit from the cavern, and kept progressing deeper into the warren of tunnels below the obsidian mountains. Soon, he came to a fork in the road, with one path sloping to the right, and the other to the left. They were practically identical as far as he could tell, and there was no way to tell them apart. However he had a subtle urging to go to the left, for a reason that even he did

not know. Perhaps it was fate, or causality as it was called in the Multiverse, or perhaps it was something else. In any case, Sam followed the urge.

Sam trudged down the nondescript black obsidian tunnel, not finding anything of note until he had been going at it for a few minutes. As the tunnel sloped downwards, the heat diminished once more, as he exited the zone of the lava pool, but it was slowly starting to ramp up again. However, this was a different type of heat, a more humid heat that would not be found from a lava pool, which would simply have evaporated all of the water in the air nearby. This felt like something that one would find from a hot spring.

As it turned out however, that was exactly what it was. Sam rounded the gently sloped corner of the tunnel and found himself standing in front of a gargantuan subterranean lake, one that was visibly boiling as he watched it. The water was a murky yellow color, and it was flecked with streams of reddish effluvia from an unknown source. Blooms of exotic algae blossomed on its surface near the shoreline, and great bubbles of noxious vapor erupted every now and

again in the distance. With his enhanced eyesight, he could just about see to the end clearly enough to make out finer details.

Various monsters lurked within its depths, and far out into the lake, which was maybe five or so miles wide, Sam saw a few massive creatures floating around, their silhouettes just about visible from above the surface. On the other side of the lake was a small landing, which seemed to have formed naturally out of the rock. On that landing was a tiny tree that even from here resonated with Sam’s spiritual senses on a profound level., If he was not mistaken, this was the site of a natural treasure. However, it was heavily guarded. Unlike with the lava pool there was no way around it other than swimming across it. Though, Sam could easily make one.

Eyeing up the sheer stone walls, Sam moved over to the nearest one, and held out one palm, drawing his concentrated Dao energy into his hand. For what he was planning, pure mana could actually have been better, but with his limited control over it, the returns would have been diminished to the point of being useless.

As he held his hand to the side of the cavern however, he found that his plan would not work. The energy seemed to diffuse across the

surface of the glassy rock rather than burn through it like it had done to so many other substances since Sam had acquired his Dao. Instead, it looked like the material he was dealing with here was no mere obsidian. He quickly scanned it, confirming his suspicions. Volcanic Obsidian

F Rank Substance

This rock is ostensibly the same as normal obsidian, but it has been infused with the power of a limited conceptual resonance with the remains of the volcanic eruption that had created it. Such was the scale of its ancient origin that some degree of conceptual resonance made its way into the rock, making it far better at reflecting energy than it should be.

Sam realized that it said nothing about physical durability, and he quickly swung his hammer into the rock. It shattered, revealing a large enough hole for him to grip on. It was certainly harder than normal obsidian but not by that much. However, proceeding like that would quickly bottom out of stamina, as he had no means of regenerating it while in transit, as every movement would drain it further. It was looking like he was going to need to take a dip to reach his target.

However, there was no question of him not doing so. He could sense just how valuable this treasure was, and it seemed to be F Rank, so even if it was not as rare as the Dao fruit that he had found on Earth, it would still be more valuable.
