Chapter 31.2: He Still Remembers War

Chapter 31.2: He Still Remembers War

There was a time enemies invaded the hive. Not the silent invasion of the moment, but an active invasion. They came in and destruction went in their ranks. A role was needed to prevent that, and there he became He Who Remembers War.

His role was to remember the war, and its costs. That there were losses and damage, the emotions those losses and damage caused, he was not enough, he needed the memories of others to complete it. But he wanted the role. The position, the power, a place in the hive. But the role was to be him, and he it. And he dwelled in the minds of others. Feeling their pain and the warriors triumph. With his work and the work of others who shared his role, they were able to predict the pattern of the enemy and win the war.

And it would be remembered. But as another war came, and the enemies had adapted, the role changed. And he collected more memories, and the emotions became less important to the role. But he remembered some of them regardless. And wars came, and the role became responsible for the activity of the hive in times of war. For they remembered how to once went, and unlike the others, they remembered it in its completeness.

They Who Remember War have shards containing most memories of the wars. And a large portion of the content of their pods is designation of what shards are most important. Now they are needing more roles more specialization, in the shards of the role, in its great database, there are shards that are rarely touched. Shards mentioned and referenced by She Who Transfers Memories that she could not create a complete image of the hunt for us because we had not the context. Half of us there, and none remembering that which was in the shards.

So I go, I examine them gently, memories, experiences. War within and without the hive. What are we to become? What have we become? What was the purpose of She Who Remembers War?

And yet she sleeps. In stupor, a pod, damaged, cracked. Vengeance in a way for telling us what we should be. But if she remembered that which is not remembered by the rest she had a purpose.

I gather these shards and bring them to her, completing her pod. When She Awakens she will be able to continue in her role. Her pod was cracked but not broken, and she has food to sustain herself. She Shall Still Remember War when she awakens. But what can I be?
