Chapter 143

Just as I was about to contact elder there was a pause somewhere in my mycelium.

I took a closer look and found that the nutrients that were being donated by the trees in the area, stopped for just a moment but then continued.

It was strange and it made me want to contact elder that much more. I quickly sent out a pulse of nutrients to a tree and got a response from elder not long after.

“Guardian I have been meaning to talk to you.”

Oh god that’s never a good thing. I quickly spoke up if only to postpone the upcoming asshole-ry, “yeah same here, I’ve been meaning to talk to you too. And if I can, I’d like to go first.”

I didn’t really have anything planned out to say but I knew there were several things I wanted to say, I just didn’t know how to say them and in what order.

Even in the before when I was human any phone call I had, I had to plan ahead on what I wanted to say and get in a very specific headspace before I even made the call. I should have done that before I signaled elder that I wanted to talk but I wasn’t really thinking.

After jade‘s betrayal, after having that nerve wracking conversation with elder about taking over a space AND after having my identity revealed to the wider forest I’ve been just the tinniest bit stressed out.

I first started with what I wanted and then I would get to the tiny issue I have of having the whole forest breathe down my neck or the other tiny issue of elder revealing my existence to everyone and their families or in this case colonies. Asshole behavior if you ask me.

“Elder in our first conversation I remember you mentioning that you had a translation nodule that allowed us to speak and so I was wondering if you would show me how one was made.”

An eternal pause later elder finally answered.

”For what reason would you ever need one when I can serve as your translator?”

Fuck nuggets, elder sounds suspicious.
