Chapter 6: Let’s Actually Start This Time!

(Marinkia’s POV)

When waking up, I realized that I was still being held by Mercedes. Was… was she rubbing my head this entire time? Surely not… But I did feel like she was, even though I was asleep. Oh, and I guess that I am not dead from the bite yet.

Marinkia: “Did you rub my head all night?” I ask.

Mercedes: “I did.” She answered.

Marinkia: “…”

Mercedes: “?”

Marinkia: “Do you not need to sleep?” I ask with a curious tone.

Mercedes: “Only every few days, and only for an hour each time. Though I said that I did it all night, I did sleep for an hour.” She explained.

Getting up from the booby pillow that was Mercedes’s chest, she helped me unblock the door once again. Then, she led me outside the apartment building. When I started to walk away, Mercedes didn’t follow me.

Huh? Well… she did say that she would protect me for one night. I guess that she is true to her word.

Marinkia: “You seem so attached to me already… why not follow?” I ask with a raised eyebrow.

Mercedes: “As much as I want to be with you right now… We haven’t gotten an answer yet.” She replied.

Marinkia: “Meaning?” I reply.

Mercedes: “My zombies wish to kill you, and holding them back from doing so takes a lot of focus. If I slip up, you may end up dead. After all, my bite is different from theirs.” She explained.

Marinkia: “Oh, so you’re protecting me? Will… will I see you again?” I ask nervously.

Mercedes: “And you, yourself, seem attached to me already as well… If it works, then I will find you. And if it doesn’t work, I swear that I will find and eat you. All so that you won’t have to live out a life of a rotting moving corpse.” She answered with a laugh.

With those last words, Mercedes gestured for me to walk away.

Marinkia: “I… I am going to run, but I am not running from you, okay? I just don’t want you to be upset if one of your zombies ends up killing me.” I say before running away.

While running away, I swear that I heard Mercedes say, “So cute…” but I will just pretend that I didn’t hear such amazing words as those. How… how long should I run for? I have no idea, but I just kept running.

Hours Later.

Mercedes seemed to have a lot of undead in this area under her control. That is to say, that I haven‘t come across any at all. Though, there were still some in buildings, but they didn’t bother to come out and chase me.

Was I not tasty enough? Well, Mercedes sure looked to find me tasty… These fuckers just don’t have a good taste in, uh… flesh? This thought process is weird, so I’ll just drop it…

Stopping on the sidewalk, I looked at my reflection in a window. Even after the bite, I still looked exactly the same. I didn’t see any changes at all. At least I still looked pretty.

Bang!

While looking at the window, my reflection, and the reflection of the world around me, prevented me from seeing inside the building. As such, I didn’t notice that there was a zombie inside until I heard it banging onto the window.

For some damn reason, like I lacked any sense of danger, I looked inside the building through the window. I could see the random zombie that noticed me, but also a pair of glaring and glowing red eyes.

Fuck… Mercedes wasn’t the only special person… From the sun, I could see pretty much the entire place inside of this building. Inside was a woman who was sitting on a counter. Seemingly interested in me.

She snapped her fingers, and then the zombies stopped bothering with me. Then she pointed at the door, and she gestured for me to enter the building. Shit… Like with Mercedes, it would be unwise to run away.

Marinkia: “…”

With a nervous mood about me, I entered the building and walked up to the woman. She was… oh, it was Mai. Except, she wasn’t a human anymore, and she looked different. Her hair was now a deep dark blue, which clashed with her blood-red eyes.

Mai: “So… you survived.” She said with a smile.

What’s up with these new humans being so smiley all the damn time?…

Marinkia: “As did you?” I reply.

Mai: “A question? Well, that would be correct, I guess.” She said with a chuckle.

Marinkia: “…”

Mai: “I am sorry about that backpack that I stole. I honestly have no use for it.” She said, handing me the backpack, but I let her keep it.

Marinkia: “It’s fine. I have enough food for a while. You should keep it as something to use as storage. It is a pretty high quality backpack, after all.” I say with a smile.

Mai: “Well, then… Thanks.” She replied.

Soon, her gaze ended up on my neck. Before I could explain myself, Mai had taken my arm, and she quickly undid the wrapping to see my wound. Why do they both have medical knowledge? Mai was so strong… it was kinda crazy…

Mai: “You were bitten… but not by a zombie, it seems.” She said with a thinking pose after redoing my bandage.

Marinkia: “…”

Mai: “Speak on who did this, Marinkia. It is far too early in this apocalypse to be caring about territories.” She urged me to answer.

Marinkia: “I met another new human like you yesterday.” I reply with a sigh.

Mai: “New human?” She replied with a head tilt.

Marinkia: “Ah, that’s what I call your people.” I clarify.

Mai: “And the woman?” She asked.

Marinkia: “Mercedes is her name, and she has white hair, she is taller than me, and Mercedes has red eyes like you.” I explain.

Mai: “Alright then. I’ll make sure not to fight with her.” She said with her arms crossed.

Marinkia: “Huh?” I say with a head tilt.

Mai: “And when did she bite you?” She asked, ignoring my confusion.

Marinkia: “Yesterday.” I answer.

Mai: “Was it… consensual?” She asked with an unsure tone.

Marinkia: “Well… she did surround me with her zombies, but I did consent to it in the end. I… I even felt good from the bite.” I honestly answer.

Fucking… I once again told information that I wouldn’t divulge normally. I was right… these new humans can make people speak the truth. How annoying… Come to think of it, why did Mai even let me meet her instead of killing me?

Oh, as I tried to walk away, her zombies completely blocked my exit, circling me just like Mercedes’s zombies did yesterday. Okay… how am I going to get out of this one now? And why the fuck am I so damn unlucky!?
