Chapter 20: Short Reunion.
(Marinkia’s POV)
Marinkia: “Mai… Mercedes… where you two watching this entire time?” I ask.
Getting up from their front row seats, the two women slowly and cheerfully made their way over to me.
Mai: “It was just too interesting to not watch, Marinkia.” She replied.
Marinkia: “…”
Mercedes: “Marinkia, we cannot stay near you any longer. We were going to help with your wounds, but it seems that you have healed up already.” She explained.
Watching them leave, I then looked in my makeup mirror. As expected, my eyes returned to normal. Even though I just fought practically to the death, all of my wounds, including those on my face, were now healed.
So… they really were following me this entire time? My theory must be right, then. They need to maintain a certain distance away from me. But they don’t need to be that far away.
At the very least, they stay close enough to where they can watch me. Thinking of it like that, why didn’t they jump in to help me? Frankly, I would have been pissed off greatly if they did. But do they not care about me?
From Sarin’s words, all mates for the Numens should be weak. Maybe they respect me more? It must have something to do with me being doubled marked by them. I have no idea for why they allowed me to fight like this, other than those two marks of theirs upon my neck.
Oh, well. Whatever the answer, I am fine with waiting to hear it. After all, I just did something amazing and killed a super special and skilled zombie. Right now, I am very, very happy. I guess that I am not a bottom when it comes to fighting, huh?…
Hours Later.
It took me a decent while to leave the area that was just dedicated to the theme park. Now, I was in another long abandoned part of the district. It was another city, but one that was majorly outdated.
To the point where nature had started to take its hold over the place. I feel like it would be unlikely for there to be zombies here, but there were zombies in that damn theme park. So I should be careful…
Walking around, now it truly did feel like the apocalypse has been going on for many years. This place wasn’t dead, but it wasn’t new, either. It was like a long gone apocalyptic city.
Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.
I felt safe to lower my guard, so I just kept walking while thinking about some things. First, what was Axel? He was a special zombie, but why was he so old? Has this virus existed for this long? And what about the Numens?
All of this… my mind just drools over the possible answers to these various questions of mine. My mind swirled with questions, to the point where I didn’t notice an obvious trap on the ground…
Sling!
Marinkia: “Right… I forgot about humans.” I say with a sigh.
Not wanting to wait and see who set this trap for me, I climbed the rope and cut it with my combat knife. Falling to the ground, I easily landed on my feet. Apparently, becoming a Numen means you instantly become a badass too…
Man: “You! Give us all your supplies!” He demanded, pointing his makeshift spear at me.
Marinkia: “No? Why should I? Kill me for it, if you can.” I reply with a smug shrug.
Heh… smug shrug… That’s funny. Dodging the poke of his spear, I drew my sword and slashed his body. The sword I used was the one that I took from Axel. As such, the man fell to the ground with his organs spilling out.
Upon seeing me gut the man without any remorse, the rest of the humans ran away like cockroaches. Slipping even further into my Numen side, I seem to have started to stop seeing humans as my people.
After all, my eyes didn’t shine this time, but I felt no remorse for killing another person. Though, don’t know that for sure, as this was I killed him in self defense. The last wasn’t really self defense.
Since I could have easily just left those people while they were distracted by their recently turned zombie buddy. Oh, well. With a shrug, I walked away, and went back to walk on the path that I was going on originally.
An Hour Later.
Marinkia: “The hell is this?” I ask with a confused tone.
Standing before me was… well, nothing. Instead, I found a giant hole in the ground. The hole was outside of a building that appeared to be a hospital. The entrance to the hospital wasn’t accessible for me, but the hole was.
Should I really go into the hole? For what purpose? Ah, to quench my thirst for adventure, I guess… I mean, I dealt with a creepy zombie infested theme park. Surely an abandoned hospital won’t be that scary.
Marinkia: “Time for hole.” I say with a chuckle.
Going into the hole, which honestly looked like a monster had dug their way out of the hospital’s underground, I saw nothing of interest. Once inside, I realized that the hospital held an interesting secret…
Marinkia: “This doesn’t make any sense…” I say with a thinking pose.
Above ground, the hospital looked like it was from 2030s, much like the rest of this abandoned city did. But here, underground, it was not the case. Instead, it was current tech. Like, it wasn’t that long ago that it was being used.
More Exploring.
Further in, I was more and more confused. There were bodies, fresh ones at that. They all mostly had researcher outfits on their person. Was this some secret lab of Grant’s? That would be my best guess.
Once entering the biggest room, I saw a giant broken tube. Was this… did Grant experiment on some undead here? Or, was this some other, inhumane experiment facility of his?
I seem to be doing this a lot, but turning around, I saw a giant undead staring at me. Well, it’s not like I can blame fate or God for this one. It was my choice to explore this place… Is there any chance it’s friendly?
Giant Zombie: “Roar!”
Welp… that answers my question. Contrary to what you would normally think, the monster’s roar didn’t come from its head. Instead, the monster’s stomach opened up into a giant, gaping maw. Ah, how am I going to get out of this one?…
