Chapter 13: Some Answers.
(Marinkia’s POV)
Ugh… my head… Sitting up in the bed, my head hurt a lot. Luckily, the pain only lasted for a few seconds. Looking around the room, I seemed to be in a highrise apartment. This must be the one that is attached to their base. Anna was there, too.
Anna: “Good morning.” She said with a smile.
Anna was sitting on a chair beside my bed. She still looked like a doctor, even when she seemed to be off the clock. I guess that she really is a researcher/doctor…
Anna: “How are you feeling?” She asked.
Marinkia: “Sick… But I will be fine in a few minutes or so.” I reply.
Anna: “That would be my fault. You see, it has been a while since I’ve drawn a human’s blood. My kind has far more blood, so I accidentally ended up taking more of your blood than you body could handle.” She explained with a remorseful tone.
Marinkia: “…”
Anna: “You slept for four days. I was very worried that you would never wake up. Luckily, I will not have to face the wraith of two fellows of my kind.” She said with a laugh.
Marinkia: “Why…” I say but her words cut me off.
Anna: “Why what? I will answer any of your questions.” She replied.
Marinkia: “Why did your breath smell like strawberries?” I ask.
Anna: “The smell will be whatever you like the most, as it would mean that you’re more likely to smell it in without resisting. You like strawberries, huh? You’re so cute, just like a rabbit.” She answered.
Marinkia: “…”
Fucking vampires… Besides them eating humans thing, they’re basically vampires. What the heck? All of this is so confusing, but I doubt that I will get answers until I evolve.
Marinkia: “This place… what’s it for?” I ask.
Anna: “Best guess will win you a sucker.” She said, holding up a clearly strawberry flavored sucker up to me.
Marinkia: “It’s a farm for meat?” I assume.
Anna: “Correct.” She said with a clap after she undid the wrapper on the sucker and stuck it in my mouth.

Marinkia: “…”
Anna: “We cannot eat zombies, after all. That would be disgusting. So, of course, we need human farms like this one. There are many around the world. But for mine, I am also using it for research.” She explained.
Marinkia: “Research? I figure that you won’t explain it to me.” I ask before quickly denying my own question.
Anna: “That’s also correct. Though, if you do evolve, I will be more than happy to explain it to you.” She replied.
Marinkia: “…”
Anna: “Sorry to say, but this is all that I will answer for you.” She said with a shrug, seemingly expecting me to ask more of her.
Girl… you took my blood and everything. And this is all the information that I get? Shit… I got taken advantage of this time. Wait… wasn’t it the same the last few times that I’ve dealt with Numen’s? I am such a damn bottom…
Anna: “What a sour look on your face… It’s pretty cute.” She said with a giggle.
Marinkia: “…”
Anna: “If you do survive, then please do know that there will be far more rewards that I will give you for your blood. For now, I have to leave them unspoken, as I cannot explain much of what my kind is.” She said with a smile.
Marinkia: “I see…” I reply with a sigh.
Anna: “Here is your backpack back, and here is a sword and combat knife that you can take with you.” She explained after getting up from her chair.
Marinkia: “Are you kicking me out?” I ask.
Anna: “Yes, and no. The humans won’t think that you got bitten, but will think that I’ve sent you on some secret mission for me. Those humans sure are easy to trick.” She happily answered.
I didn’t expect that I would be kicked out so damn fast. Didn’t I give her like, a shit ton of my blood? I feel like I am getting played like a damn fiddle…
Anna: “There is a reason why you cannot stay near me or those other two, Marinkia. It is for your own safety, and that is all that I can say on the matter.” She said with a serious tone.
With no other options, I soon left the safe place, which was just an illusion, and went off on my own. It was safe, but the people here were just a living menu waiting to be eaten…
Hours Later.
The sword that Anna gave me was a Katana. Very useful, I might add. And the knife was a one made specifically for combat. Both of these weapons aren’t old, as people still wished to own real weapons like these.
With both of these weapons, I doubt that any of them will break anytime soon. Unlike that kitchen knife, my new one will not just instantly snapped when I try to pull it out of a skull.
Something that I’ve always wondered… is why Grant allowed weapons like these to be still made? Even firearms weren’t banned by him. Of course, his weapons that he had access to would make firearms and these melee weapons look like jokes.
I guess that, in the end, I can only assume that Grant was just too cocky. After all, if he was afraid of people revolting and killing him, he wouldn’t have let us have access to kitchen knives. Let alone antique weapons and firearms.
Though, that just goes to show how indoctrinated even I was in his world. Prior to the zombies, I just saw these weapons as pointless toys. Now, they’re things that people need to use to be able to survive.
And, until I am a Numen myself, I will have to use them to survive as well. I was always a decently smart person, which might explain why I am so accepting of the Numen’s.
In my opinion, I can assume that being in the presence of a Numen might interrupt my evolving. But that is just my current guess as to why I must stay away from them.
Just considering how well Mai and Mercedes treat me, that would have to be the case somewhat. If not, I cannot understand why they, the ones who treat me as their wife, would leave me alone in this dangerous world without them to protect me.
Marinkia: “Please… Please don’t let me run into another Numen…” I plead to no one at all.
Somewhere deep inside me, I was the kind of person that longed for the world to fall. Not forever, mind you. But just for a little well, so that I can try and survive a harsh world. I guess that… I was always weird like this, huh?…
