Chapter 42: Mission.
(Marinkia’s POV)
I was eating dinner with Clare, and that’s something that she hasn’t missed a single day since I became her daughter. It seems that, as much as I needed a mother, Clare also needed a daughter. In that sense, it is win-win all around.
Rather than going to bed like usual, Clare asked for me to sit down on the couch with her. What’s up?
Clare: “Kia, you mother is held up at the moment.” She said with a sigh.
Marinkia: “Do you mean Krul?” I reply.
Clare: “That’s correct. For a long time, she had let two abominations of Grant haunt this district.” She replied.
Marinkia: “It’s the one underground, and the one giant one, right?” I ask.
Clare: “You… You’ve met them?” She asked with a shocked tone.
Marinkia: “For the giant one, I just heard it walking around. I didn’t see it. For the underground one, I did shortly fight with it once. I honestly thought that they were both undead, though.” I explain.
I was kinda disappointed. If they’re fucked up creations of Grant, then those monsters are super less interesting. This is because that none of those creatures would actually be able to talk at all.
Clare: “Then… do you want to go fight and kill the underground one?” She suggested.
Marinkia: “You’ll actually let me fight?” I reply with an unsure tone.
Clare: “I will be by your side the entire time, but yes.” She answered.
Marinkia: “Awesome! I have a score to settle with that one!” I say with an excited tone and expression.
Without waiting for Clare to speak anything more, I rushed up to my room. Please, just ignore that my room is completely pink, and that I have so many stuffed animals everywhere, I am NOT here for that!
Opening up my closet, I realized that my weapons and backpack were missing. What the heck? Did one of the maids take them out of my room? Though, why would they do that?… Rushing back down the stairs, I needed answers.
Marinkia: “Mom, my backpack and weapons are missing!” I exclaim.
Clare: “…”
Marinkia: “…”
Looking at the coffee table in front of Clare, I saw all three of my weapons, and a new backpack. I swear that those weren’t there when I ran upstairs!!! I am not that stupid. Am I?…
If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.
Clare: “Well, I had sent your weapons off to the one of our main cities a few weeks ago.” She said with a giggle.
Marinkia: “Really? What for…” I say as I was unsheathing my Katana, but my words were stopped as I looked at the blade.
The blade of my Katana, and probably the blade of my other sword and my combat knife, all shown a blue hue. They felt… far higher of a quality than before. Not to mention, the blade was completely different. It was reforged; I think?
Clare: “I sent them off to be remade. The blue that you see means that it is very effective against the undead. In fact, besides the special ones, most undead won’t even approach you with that blade drawn.” She explained.
Marinkia: “…”
Clare: “As for the backpack… it wasn’t one of the best quality, so I had it replaced with a new one.” She continued.
Marinkia: “…”
I see… but did you have to make it pink? Eh, what do I care? I love pink! With a smile, I ran up to Clare and gave her the nth hug that I have given today. Come to think of it, will I be able to get more of those cores?
Marinkia: “Hey, Mom? Some special zombies melt into crystals. Do they even do anything? The people of this city seem to think that they give people powers, but I haven’t seen anything like that at all.” I ask with a curious tone.
Clare: “They do no such thing. As for why some special zombies have started to appear outside these walls, no one really knows. And the crystals… they do nothing for humans. That was just a lie we sold to get them to obtain more of those crystals for us.” She explained.
Marinkia: “Huh? If our race wanted them, does that mean that those crystals do something after all?” I ask.
Clare: “For zombies, they make them stronger and help them evolve. The zombies you’ve seen with glowing eyes have all eaten such crystals. As for us, we aren’t affected by the crystals at all.” She answered.
Marinkia: “Oh, so Anna already finished researching them?” I reply.
Clare: “Not fully, as we don’t know the extent of how far the undead can evolve. It might be something to worry about in the future, but we will not let that race of pets destroy us.” She replied with a shrug.
So… Zombies really are seen as pets, huh? That isn’t surprising. I don’t recall Mai or Mercedes ever treating their zombies more than annoying pets. Pets that can do slight protection, that is. The wolf comparison was good.
Clare: “Kia, we will leave in two days. Krul will deal with the large one, and we will deal with the one underground.” She said with a serious tone.
Marinkia: “Okay, Mom.” I reply.
Looking through my backpack, I realized that everything was in there. That is, my UV flashlight, that I never ended up using, and my super food and super water. Wait… the flashlights are newer and look more expensive… Huh? Where are my old clothes?
Marinkia: “Mom, my old clothes are missing.” I say.
Clare: “…Well, you see… I didn’t think that such clothes were fit for you, Kia. The quality wasn’t up to what we tend to wear, and the style didn’t match you.” She said with a nervous tone.
Marinkia: “What happened to them?” I ask.
Clare: “…I… I donated them to an orphanage in this city.” She answered.
Marinkia: “Oh, I see.” I reply.
Clare: “You aren’t mad?” She asked.
Marinkia: “I am not mad. Though, if you just threw them away, I would have been. They still had many years of use left on them, even if you were rough with them.” I explain.
Clare: “I see. I am sorry for overstepping my bounds. I will ask next time.” She said with a remorseful tone.
Marinkia: “I am not mad at you, why apologize? It takes a lot to overstep my bounds, don’t worry.” I reply with a smile.
Once again, I must console this woman who is countless years older than me. Not like I mind. I honestly didn’t. It was nice to have someone to care for. And to have someone care for me. Maybe that’s why I accepted Mai and Mercedes so fast?
Regardless of the reason why, I need to focus on this mission! Besides that little mishap in the city a while ago, I haven’t had the chance to kill anything in a long time. Not to mention, I get to go kill shit with my mother! Ah, this is going to be so much fun!
