Chapter 28: Must Find a New Destination…
(Marinkia’s POV)
It didn’t take that long for me to find the tallest building in this area. Unfortunately, it seems that most of the buildings in this district don’t go over two floors. Though I did find a building that had four floors. Which was better than nothing as a vantage point…
Break!
With a kick, I broke in the door to get inside the building. Inside were many small fry zombies, who all shambled over to me. Since they were stupid, I just made a loud sound and funneled them all outside.
When they left the safety darkness of the building, they shielded their eyes in pain. This gave me the amazingly easy job of killing them. Instead of cutting their heads off, I just impaled them with my Katana.
This worked far better than cutting off their heads, as they died instantly this way. Without a Numen to guide them, these unspecial zombies were very, very stupid.
In just twenty minutes, I was certain that I had killed off all of the zombies on the first floor. Going back inside, I didn’t see anymore zombies at all. Frankly, it took longer to find the damn stairs than it did to clear the first floor…
Marinkia: “Found it!” I happily exclaim.
Though I did eventually find the stairs. There weren’t that many zombies on the stairs. At most, there were only ten on all flights. Since the stairs, and this building was an old design, I could go up to the top floor easily.
Clank!
That is to say, that I didn’t have to go to each floor. I just skipped them all. Opening up the door to the fourth floor, I was met with a very boring sight. Most of the windows were broken, and only torse zombies remained on this floor.
Due to that, it was very easy to clear yet another floor of this building. Looking out the window, I couldn’t really see that far. The windows were small, not giving me much of a vantage point.
Maybe there is a roof access? Looking around, I found a utility closet. Inside was a ladder that had a hatch above it. Climbing up, I was met with the reality that I didn’t have the key to unlock the hatch.
This place is old enough to where the people still used physical keys? Not even in my classical apartment did anyone use old physical keys like this… In anger, I pulled at the lock with some strength.
Snap!

Marinkia: “Works for me, I guess…” I chuckle.
The lock was old, and combined with me being stronger than a human, I was able to break the lock with ease by complete accident. After opening up the hatch, I was now on the roof of this building.
Marinkia: “Whistle” I whistle in awe.
This is the highest that I have ever been in my life. Sure, my apartment was on a far higher floor than this. But the feeling was different. I only had the small balcony, and this roof was large and open.
Looking on each side of the building, only one direction had any large buildings. In the west was a large city that had multiple tall buildings. From what I can guess, it might have been the business district of this uh… district.
Marinkia: “I guess that I found my new destination, huh?” I say to no one at all.
I’ve always talked to myself, and now that there really aren‘t any other people around, and that my wives aren’t here either, why should I stop?
And isn’t it true that in most apocalypses, people tend to talk to themselves a lot? I mean, if you don’t, won’t you end up losing your mind? Like, with that one guy who got trapped on an island. He talked to a soccer ball…
Crash!
The world shook violently. And the building that I was standing on top of was shaking like a leaf. What the heck? This can’t be an earthquake, right? As far as I am aware, Grant already solved the problem of earthquakes…
Lanky Special Zombie: “What are you doing!? You need to hide!” He exclaimed from inside of building through the window.
Marinkia: “From what? Is it that underground monster making a fuss?” I ask.
Lanky Special Zombie: “It isn’t that underground monster, but if you stay out in the open for long enough… well, you’ll find out. I prefer to not die, so do as you please.” He said before going back further inside the building.
Damn… Why did he have to explain it like that? Now I am even more curious about what is causing the ground to shake like an earthquake. As such, I sat down on the roof without any care in the world.
A Lot of Waiting Later.
After an hour, I was honestly getting bored. Did that lanky zombie trick me, or something like that? Whatever it was, the ground didn’t shake anymore. I guess that it left this area without finding me?
What even was it? Hm… I doubt that it’s another experiment of Grant’s. Instead, it is probably some special large zombie. From the shamblers that I’ve seen, the zombies here have been undead for a long time.
Maybe the rate of decay isn’t the same for these zombies as it would be for human bodies, but it was different in my district. There, the zombies had rotting bodies that smelled horrible, but their bodies were mostly intact.
I mean, most of them had injuries before turning into zombies, but you understand what I mean. The zombies in this district were barely there at all. Most had exposed bones, and it was very easy to cut them into pieces. Like butter…
In fact, I came across many zombies that had no more meat left on their bodies to actually move around. Those ones would be consumed by other undead, I guess.
Actually, it was kinda weird walking around this district. There were many, and I mean MANY, straight up human skeletons all around this place. It was like the entire district was doing a fucked up Halloween festival…
Well, since that big dude didn’t show up, I should just leave. Oddly, I felt like I could jump off of this building and survive. Without much assurance that this would work and be fine, I did just that.
thud!
Marinkia: “Wow… I am not a human anymore, huh…” I say in shock.
Not only did I survive the fall, I felt like I didn’t even fall that far at all. Surely there are limits to how high a Numen can fall from, but it is insane that I can jump off a four story building and survive with ease…
What will happen to me when I actually evolve into a Numen? I am already so different from a human. Not yet a Numen, I am still no longer a human, either. What fun! With a pep in my step, I set off for my new destination!
