Chapter 43: Marinkia… my Daughter.
(Clare’s POV)
Me adopting Marinkia as my daughter vexes me in a way. For many, many years. Probably even over 80,000 years, Krul has been telling me to get a daughter. She said that such a thing is something that I secret want to have.
But this desire to have a child of my own… it was never enough to adopt any mate. Despite meeting thousands of mates over the years, I never felt the need or desire to parent or adopt them.
If I couldn’t be a good mother to them, there was no reason for me to adopt them at all. It would just lead to me neglecting them. That was… until I met Marinkia…
Thinking back to how I first met her, I was beyond confused. Seeing her, I thought, “Whose daughter is this?” already seeing her like a child. I was drawn to her instantly.
Whenever this happened before, I was just attracted to a woman. And, she wasn’t my kind. Though, it was shocking to know that Kia was in the process of turning into a mate.
Once I realized that, and the longer I spent with her just made me finally realize my true feelings for her. I wanted her as my daughter. Evident by how disgusted I am when I think about my slight advances toward her, or any of the slightly sexual things we did before.
And I couldn’t hold back this desire any longer. The flood gates opened up when she went missing. I was going crazy once I heard the news. But I figured that Kia was just somewhere else within the city, and she was safe.
Only when Berna informed me of where Kia went did I spring into action. Kia just so happened to be wondering around in the same area where the terrorist attack happened.
I went to there as fast as I could. Seeing Kia drenched in blood… my heart sank. I was so very, very afraid that she had gotten bitten or scratched by an undead. Even one that was marked by our kind, they can still get infected with the virus from the undead.
The mark wouldn’t stop them from turning into zombies. Luckily, Kia had managed to not get injured at all. The blood wasn’t hers, which made me very relieved to know.
And it was then that I knew how I saw Kia. She was my daughter, that wasn’t anything that I could deny any longer. Besides Krul, has there ever been anyone that I’ve pampered like this before?
There wasn’t, and I was clearly already treating Kia as my daughter. Her accepting me as her mother was amazing. Her words were the truth, not a single lie in her accepting me. Frankly, Kia rarely lies.
Krul did mention this to me many times, but I didn’t know if she would accept Kia as our daughter. Of course, I contacted her about Kia, using the terrorist attack as a starter. As for that man, well, he died in the explosion. The rest of the people involved were captured, and their group was ended then and there.

Krul’s words were chilling, but I understood where she was coming from. Rather than a mate, Krul always suggested for me to adopt a human as a daughter. This way, Krul wouldn’t be upset if the girl was weak. But Kia isn’t a human, nor is she weak.
Krul: “Take her to go kill that underground abomination. If she can survive… then I will accept her.” Was her reply.
The reason why the plan took literally thousands of years before we took this world over… was because Krul was a child in some regards. After turning me, she had lost a few others that she turned.
This hurt her greatly. Even now, besides me, she keeps most people at length. The main reason why our relationship is a secret is due to that fear of her losing me. If no one knows that we love each other, surely no one will try to tear us apart, or try to kill me. Is Krul’s thinking.
Keep in mind, this doesn’t mean that Krul isn’t okay with me adopting Kia. She is fine with it. Krul just doesn’t want to accept Kia as her daughter, as she is afraid that Kia will die at any time.
The abomination that we’re going to go kill is something that even one of our kind would have trouble dealing with. Krul… despite her new name, isn’t cruel most of the time. In fact, she must fully expect me to not allow Kia to go hunt that monster with me.
This is evident, as Berna will be going with us. Berna is the eighth person that Krul ever turned. And she was older than me at that time. As such, Berna has always been a loyal retainer and friend to Krul.
In fact, the main reason she is even here is to just protect me. If I go and kill that monster alone, and then report that Kia killed it, Krul wouldn’t believe me. After all, Berna will be there to watch the entire thing play out.
Clare: “Do you think that she can do it, Berna?” I ask with an unsure tone.
Berna: “Although I do not know the strength of that abomination, Marinkia is very strong and skilled.” She replied.
Clare: “Very skilled, indeed… How was the investigation of her origins?” I ask.
Berna: “Besides being the rare kind of human that actually worked, rather than live off of their UBI, there is nothing special about Marinkia. Though, she was somewhat active, going out every once in a while.” She answered.
Clare: “She… how does Kia know how to fight, then?” I ask with a thinking pose.
Berna: “She took some self-defense classes, but her skill shouldn’t be at this level. Anna’s theory is that, due to the double marking, Marinkia was able to inherit some of Krul’s knowledge.” She explained.
Clare: “…”
A mate gaining Krul’s knowledge? No wonder that she was able to survive this entire time. Any mate in her district would have easily been killed by a feral zombie. Let alone survive the undead in this district of Krul’s.
Krul has always loved hunting both humans, and even undead. As such, the undead here know of her, and are stronger and more cautious than the undead in any other place. I am sure that Kia is curious about why she knows how to fight, but that is something that Krul would just love to explain to her.
Kia: “Are you ready, Mom?” She asked with an excited tone.
Clare: “Yes. Do you have everything that you need?” I reply.
Kia: “I am pretty sure that I do.” She replied.
Clare: “Good. Have you ever been in a shuttle before?” I ask.
Kia: “I have, but it has been a while since I’ve flown in one.” She answered with a cute thinking pose.
Clare: “Alright, then we will fly slowly.” I reply, rubbing her head.
Kia probably won’t ever admit it, but she really loves it when someone rubs her head. The way that she nuzzles up to your hand, and the smile of pure bliss on her face, well… It just makes you want to rub her head even more.
I am sure that Kia, my daughter, can pass Krul’s test for her. Then, she will have the love of two mothers. I wonder if we will overstimulate her with our motherly love?…
