Chapter 46: Mother Daughter Hunting.

(Clare’s POV)

We ended up getting inside that monster’s area. Like it somehow knew that we were a threat, it would attack us with its fleshy tentacles. Since there weren’t any undead in this area, it was easy to focus on the tentacles.

Berna used her combat knife just as effective as I wielded my sword. It wasn’t that we didn’t have access to firearms, we did. But when it comes to our race, strength and speed are our traits. Firearms don’t do much compared to how effective we can be with a sword or similar bladed weapons.

Kia: “These Tentacles are getting annoying.” She said with a sigh.

Clare: “Yes, you would think that this monster would run out by now.” I agree.

Berna: “On the way here, we didn’t run into any undead. It would seem that the monster is indeed eating them up. Maybe, due to being recently fed, it has more resources to sprout more tentacles?” She explained.

That would make sense, and we both agreed with her assumption. Now, as for what this thing would even look like… I have no idea. Krul did tell us what this thing is. It was an experiment by Grant to control the undead.

Grant never expected the undead to gain intelligence, so it was only effective on the normal zombies. It feeds and commands such zombies. When Krul last met it, the monster wasn’t bigger than an old antique car.

But it has surely grown to be too big in the last thirty or so years since then. Only now is Krul dealing with these two troublesome monsters, because the last district, the one that Kia lived in, was successfully taken over.

Now, all ten thousand districts were completely under our control. Every human was either an undead, dead, or being kept alive in a human farm. Krul once told me that when the war was over, she would publicly marry me.

The war was now over, we had won against Grant. But there were many loose ends that needed to be dealt with. One of those being the AI Grant, but finding him has been an issue.

Since she hit a deadend on finding him, she decided to deal with these monsters that Krul had left alone for a while. The one that Kia killed earlier was also on that list. Such a good girl, saving her mother some trouble.

Clare: “You’re pretty good at dodging these tentacles, Kia.” I praise.

Kia: “Yeah, I did kill one of Grant’s experiments a while ago. That thing was huge, and it used tentacles just like these. It was probably made by the same people who also made this monster.” She explained.

She even killed that one? Although a low priority target to Krul, she still planned to kill it, eventually. After that short conversation, we kept going further into the sewers.

The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.

Hours Later.

The sewers broke away to reveal an entire underground tunnel system. None of it was manmade, or even made by us… This monster seemed to tunnel around its nest like an ant colony would do.

Around the tunnels were various normal undead, clearly following the orders of the monster. Each time we killed one of them, we would hear a loud roar. Funnily enough, Kia figured out that the monster won’t attack its minions.

Which allowed us to use them as shields and deal with the tentacles more easily. By this point, we had cut and destroyed more than a few thousands of these tentacles.

We were clearly taking a toll on the monster, though. The amount of tentacles that we had to deal with would be less and less the more that we destroyed them. Soon, we came across a very gruesome sight…

Kia: “Wow… a gore nest.” She said with a whistle.

Clare: “…”

Berna: “…”

A gore nest would be putting it lightly. Inside this pit were well over 50,000 human corpses. This was where it kept the feed for its workers, huh? It ran this place like a human would run a factory. Which would make sense. After all, it was humans that created this horrible monster.

Kia: “There is a large hole over there.” She pointed out.

Past the gore pit was another large tunnel. Kia walked past the gore without batting an eye, and neither did Berna nor I flinch as well. Although we keep humans in good, healthy conditions, human meat factories do exist. Going down the tunnel, we came across yet another horrible sight…

Kia: “It’s… it is far bigger than I thought that it would be!” She exclaimed.

This is the first time that I have ever seen Kia shocked like this, and I understood why. The monster… it was correct to call it by the childish name. That was the only way that you could describe it.

The monster stood well over 100 feet tall, it being a fat mess of flesh. Supported by a fat neck were five different heads, all seemingly being independent of each other.

Despite there being so many heads, the monster, being of a failed human experiment, didn’t seem to have much intelligence at all. That is to say, it wasn’t like a person, but it was a smart animal.

Kia: “Mom!” She yelled in horror.

Faster than I could react, a giant, tube-like mouth, similar to that of a leech, had sprouted out from the monster’s stomach. It was clear that its target was me.

Before I could dodge in time, Kia had pushed me backward, and Berna had safely caught me. I watched in horror as the giant worm-like month deceased upon Kia, swallowing her up, before retracting back into the monster.

Clare: “…”

Berna used the fact that she was far stronger than me to pull me away. How could I just leave like this? My daughter was just eaten right before my very eyes…

Berna: “We can’t fight this monster, Clare!” She yelled, continuing to pull me back away from the monster that ate my daughter.

Clare: “Fight!? Why… I… I just want to die now.” I admit, with tears streaming down my face.

Hit!

Waking up, I was back at my estate. Berna must have knocked me out cold. Kia… My daughter is gone… And it is all my fault. What have I done? Being so damn stupid to take her to such a dangerous place…

Berna: “You’re awake?” She asked.

Clare: “…”

Berna: “I understand how you feel, but your daughter is alive.” She said with a serious tone.

Clare: “Where is she?” I ask.

Berna: “I don’t know. I contacted Mai and Mercedes, they said that they could still feel that Marinkia was alive. As for Krul, only you have her contact information.” She explains.

Without wasting anymore time, I quickly called Krul. I explained everything that happened to her, and Berna was there to verify that I was telling the truth. Then, I finally begged her to save our daughter.

“I’ll try, but no promises, dear.” She agreed.

If Krul agreed, that means that she now accepted Kia as our daughter. With her reassuring tone from my pleading, I was certain that Kia would be safe in the end. Like I hadn’t slept in months, a wave of fatigue hit me, and I fell asleep…
