Chapter 64: Spending the last days with the most beloved

As the couple headed back to Cravine, they found their home to be very lively with so many voices. When they stepped in to find Brisbane entertaining not just the twins but their grandparents, Xue Ting blinked multiple times trying to digest the situation. The couple shared a look before looking at the twins who were grinning at them.

"Grandma, grandpa why are you here?" Qiu Wen asked nonchalantly as he walked over to hug them with Xue Ting.

"Aww, my favorite grandchildren are back. How was the trip?" Grandma asked as she received hugs from both of them.

"It was good. We managed to have the prototype already for samples to show to the client." Qiu Wen updated.

"Your grandpa misses both of you so we decided to come by and stay over the weekend. Then, we found this little girl here." Grandma explained as Xue Ting regained her composure while hugging Grandma.

"Good to see you again, Grandma. Grandpa, have you been well?" She asked while hugging Grandma as Grandpa nodded with a smile.

Xue Ting then chuckled and squatted to greet her stepdaughter. "Yes, Brisbane why are you here?" She asked adoringly as Brisbane kissed her cheeks.

"Cause I miss mummy!" Brisbane cheered as she hugged Xue Ting. Xue Ting lifted Brisbane to walk over to greet the twins only to find them looking suspicious.

"Saw her in front of the school with Auntie Pam and Uncle Dan greeting us after the camp trip. So I decided to kidnap her for a bit." Joy giggled.

"Shouldn't your trip end tomorrow?" Xue Ting questioned while trying to act suspicious of them. Joy shrugged innocently trying to tease her mother.

"Shouldn't you be back tomorrow?" Joy asked in return to Xue Ting as Xue Ting snarled at her attempt.

"The trip was cut short due to the bad weather," Matthew explained as he walked out of the kitchen with a tray to serve the old ones tea. Joy raised a questioning eyebrow at Xue Ting to her question.

"Our job was completed on time." Xue Ting answered briefly as Joy nodded in satisfaction before joining Matthew in entertaining the old ones. Qiu Wen then went to give a call to Dan to check on the situation.

"Yo bro, sorry we are late with picking up Brisbane. Got a little carried away with our date." Dan apologised as Qiu Wen grinned at Xue Ting.

"It's alright. Carry on with your date. We will look after her." Xue Ting giggled hearing Qui Wen's offer.

"Aren't you both away for the weekend? The twins headed back early and Brisbane wanted to meet them after they caught up over a call." Dan explained as Qiu Wen smiled.

"Work ended early. Anyway, we will send her to school on Monday. Enjoy your freedom bro!" Qiu Wen teased as Dan chuckled before they both hung up.

"Shall we head to the park for a stroll?" Dan suggested as Pam was surprised at the sudden arrangement.

"Aren't we picking up Brisbane? What happened?" Pam questioned as Dan stole a kiss from her.

"We are on a dating spree for the weekend! Free from parenting duties!" Dan cheered as he drove them to the park while Pam chuckled gratefully for the Tangs' couple hearty help.

Dan and Pam had been working things out together slowly as the divorce process had been brought to court waiting to go on trial since Alshton did not intend to cooperate However, it did not stop the couple from occasionally stealing time to go on dates, and was glad that Brisbane was adapting very well to their situation.

On the other side, Grandpa was diagnosed with pneumonia and was very ill but no one knew except Grandma. The old couple decided to spend more time with their favorite grandchild and his family instead. Despite the news and ambiguous situation, the old couple had already treated the twins as their great-grandchildren though they suspected that Qiu Wen was their father. It was mainly due to the resemblance of especially Joy in her character which were similar to Qiu Wen when he was younger.

With Xue Ting's extended off days till Tuesday, she accompanied the family to the animal shelter the next day. It has been a while since she went to take a look at their pet puppies which the twins wanted to keep.

"Qiu Qiu, your pet puppies have all grown up now!" Xue Ting exclaimed as the three dogs surrounded her and Brisbane was by her side petting each of them.

"That shows how long you haven't been here, mummy!" Joy pouted as she and Matthew patted each of them too.

"Should we get more puppies now?" Matthew suggested while half joking as Xue Ting snarled at the twins.

"Same old questions. Where are you going to keep them? Who is going to take care of them?" She nagged as the twins giggled.

"Fine, fine we will just keep them here as usual," Joy concluded as Grandma who was eavesdropping on them walked over.

"Ting Ting…" Xue Ting stood. "Yes, Granny?"

"Why don't you let them bring home a few puppies? Granny can help to take care of them." Xue Ting was surprised at her offer.

"But, no. It would only trouble you to come over daily." Xue Ting rejected as Grandma patted her hand.

"We plan to come and visit more often and stay over. Don't worry, the puppies can keep me occupied too." Grandma persuaded Xue Ting who did not have a good feeling about it. She could feel there was something wrong but decided to not pry in case it upset her.

"I will let you slowly decide but don't be too slow. I would love to have little puppies like Brisbane's ones running around soon." Grandma coaxed as the twins beamed at Xue Ting eagerly. In actual fact, Grandma just wanted to be more occupied when Grandpa was not around anymore and it was not news she could convey just yet.

"Alright, let me think about it." Xue Ting replied tentatively satisfying all of them as she looked at Qiu Wen's direction who was accompanying Grandpa in a talk. It seemed to her that Grandpa was not looking very well though he was cheerful.

Could it be something to do with grandpa's health? The question faded away from Xue Ting's mind eventually as she got swamped entertaining everyone over the weekend and even enjoyed playing board games together.

That night, as she lay in bed staring up at the ceiling while listening to the heavy rain pouring outside the room's window, she finally had time to indulge in her thoughts of Grandma's recent strange requests. Heavily wandering in her thoughts, she did not realise Qiu Wen had sneaked up in bed with her.

As he wrapped her in his arms, she was startled for a moment. "What's wrong? You seem to be out of space. Something bothering you?" Qiu Wen asked as he stole a kiss from her who was looking into his gaze.

"Wen Wen, is there something wrong you noticed with Grandma or Grandpa?" She asked as Qiu Wen gave it a thought and wondered if she also noticed how frail Grandpa had looked.

"Grandpa?" He asked as they both understood each other's thoughts.

"He is old and has been sick for a while. Don't think too much." He comforted her as she snuggled into his arms and hoped for it to be true before they heard a knock on their door.

He went to answer the door moments later only to find Brisbane running into their room and buried herself into Xue Ting's arms in bed.

"Aww, baby are you still afraid of the thunder?" Xue Ting asked while snuggling with her as she nodded slightly.

Qiu Wen closed the door and climbed back in bed, half regretting offering to look after Brisbane and wasting the chance to be intimate with Xue Ting again.

"Let's not have kids at all." He concluded as he rolled his eyes at the sight of his wife being stolen. Xue Ting chuckled and reached out to caress his cheeks.

"I still love you, alright." He then stole a kiss from her upon listening to her comforting him.

"Let's rest. I will send her back to her kingdom tomorrow and bother her idol daddy Dan." Qiu Wen tried comforting himself as Xue Ting chuckled even more.

The old couple was very delighted at the well-spent weekend as Grandma sat by Grandpa that night in bed, holding his hand in hers. She wondered how many more nights and chances could she be doing that.

"Don't worry old one. We had lived our lives well together…" Grandpa comforted his restless wife as he spoke slowly.

"Do you think the twins are Wen Wen's?" Grandma asked as Grandpa chuckled. "You remember Wen Wen likes to get upset when he loses a game?" Grandma nodded with a smile and recalled their game earlier.

"You see how Qiu Qiu was also reacting the same when she lost the game?" Grandpa pointed out as the couple laughed happily together.

"Yes, yes… Xin Xin is very much like Xue Ting. Calm and loves to observe. So quiet. They are opposite of James… That Xin Xin was more of an angry one always. It's such a sad thing he left so early." Grandma pointed out as Grandpa sighed heavily.

"Even if they don't tell us or reveal the truth, the twins will always be our grandchildren." Grandma comforted Grandpa as he nodded.

"We have raised our daughter wrongly." Grandpa shook his head with regret.

"It's only a matter of time this granddaughter-in-law would teach her a lesson." Grandma laughed.

"Yes, only she could bend and break Wen Wen. Hopefully, by then your daughter will come to know what we see of Ting Ting…" Grandpa said as Grandma leaned onto him and gently patted his hand to comfort him.
