Chapter 48: Dan's health past

When Qiu Wen arrived at the emergency unit, he saw Xue Ting pacing in front of a ward as he ran over to her.

"Oh, Wen Wen you're here!" Xue Ting was relieved to see him as he hugged her but he could not calm himself down as his breathing got heavier. He was suppressing his anxiety issues by repetitively telling himself Xue Ting was with him.

"How's his situation?" He questioned anxiously. Before Xue Ting could answer, they heard Dan's voice.

"Still kicking…" He said in a weak tone. Qiu Wen instantly drew the curtains to find Dan smiling at him. Dan studied how Qiu Wen rushed over with one sleeve unrolled and his shirt was crumpled.

He must have crumpled them to suppress his anxiety. Dan thought guiltily as Qiu Wen sighed sharply in relief.

"You're alright buddy? Any place not comfortable?" Qiu Wen questioned while fidgeting with him.

"I'm alright. I'm alright. I have the daily dosage already. I just need a little more rest." Dan said weakly as Qiu Wen was on the verge of breaking down but he was holding on to not doing so in front of Xue Ting.

Xue Ting walked over to hold his hand and gently rubbed the top with her thumb to comfort him discreetly. "Glad you're doing better. Should we let Pam know since I don't think you would be able to discharge today?" Xue Ting offered.

"No, please no. Just don't let her know. We will see how it goes later in the day. For now, please don't let her know anything." Dan said as Xue Ting nodded. Qiu Wen wanted to protest but he was still trying to keep his emotions under control.

"Sicily… Thank you." Dan said sincerely as Xue Ting smiled.

"You're welcome. Rest well. We will be around if you need anything." Xue Ting offered as Dan nodded.

"Go ahead with your day. I will be fine. I will give him a call when I can discharge." Dan held on to Qiu Wen's hand which made Qiu Wen stare at him.

"Make sure you do." He said after a moment. Dan smiled and nodded before letting Xue Ting lead Qiu Wen away.

At the open space car park before heading into her car, she hugged Qiu Wen for a while and rubbed his back to soothe him before looking at him.

"Hey… It's alright. Let it out. You don't have to stop yourself from crying in front of me. I know how serious his situation is. He needs to be more careful and ensure he…" Before she could finish her sentence, he held her and silently sobbed.

"He could have died. If it wasn't because you were there, he might not make it…" He said as she gently rubbed his back.

"He was lucky to be in the hospital. It must be tough on you. It's not his first time is it?" She asked as Qiu Wen shook his head.

"He will be alright now… We need to figure out how to let Pam know but knowing he didn't want to, I understand. We shall see about it later. For now, I will send you back to work and take a look at Pam?" She offered as he nodded, feeling unsettled while she led him into the car.

Xue Ting had updated Jia Yi on the circumstances while she helped out Pam and pretended that nothing happened. Jia Yi had rescheduled some important meetings for Qiu Wen and left him to some minor reports to attend to the entire afternoon. Jia Yi only came in occasionally with drinks and left him undisturbed as Qiu Wen looked very distracted the whole time.

Francesca was walking into the building for her first day after a late lunch with Alfred, her childhood friend who had a crush on her but knew he was only a sidekick to her. She glanced at Xue Ting happily chatting with Pam at the bakery. The sight of her made Francesca walk over snarling with an agenda. With the news heavily covering Qiu Wen and Xue Ting's marriage previously after that scene, Pam knew who it was in front of her counter. She tried to nonchalantly take Francesca's order like usual.

"I want her to take my order." Francesca pointed at Xue Ting instead which made Pam feel a little out of control but ready to refute.

Xue Ting had seen through Francesca's intention from the very beginning. "Let me do it." Xue Ting told Pam as she gently pushed Pam aside who was protesting.

"So, what can I get you, Miss?" Xue Ting asked politely with a smile noticing Alfred behind Francesca had been eyeing her from the very beginning. She assumed he must be her assistant and if he was, then he was doing a bad job for giving away Francesca's intention so fast.

"I wonder if you have anything for someone who is feeling down from a rejection of love recently." Francesca raised an eyebrow as Xue Ting tried to keep her composure but in actual fact, she was snickering at Francesca in mind.

"Let's go with something sweet then. At least it would help you speak sweeter words and please everyone else. Besides, it's your first day today isn't it, Miss Wei?" Xue Ting challenged her in return.

"Are you trying to get me fat?" Francesca bellowed in disbelief.

"Then, let's go with something sour. After all, it's the best reflection of the reason you felt down. Besides, it helps with slimming down." Xue Ting retaliated again. Pam was glad Xue Ting could defend herself even if it meant getting themselves into trouble.

"Where is the manager here?! I want to meet your manager! How could you treat your customer this way?!" Pam panicked at Francesca's absurdity as Xue Ting chuckled and held Pam's hand to keep her calm.

"Oh, haven't anyone told you? My husband's friend is the manager here. I am in charge while he is away. What's next? Close down? Hmm… Guess that wouldn't happen cause my husband loves me really a lot Miss Wei. He listens to me all the time." Xue Ting spoke nonchalantly but was always polite to avoid giving Francesca any chance to complain about their services. It was satisfying and amusing for both ladies to see Francesca fume in front of them after being speechless.

"Calm down… Here's a free candy for you. Have a good day, customer." Xue Ting smiled with a hinge of sarcasm as she handed out the mint candy to Francesca but she had already stormed off.

"It's her right? The lady who was supposed to marry your husband?" Pam asked worriedly as Xue Ting nodded. "Are you sure that will be alright? She is very furious." Pam asked worriedly again.

"Don't worry. She should be more worried than I am. Next time you see Francesca Wei, I don't think she will give you any trouble. If she does, just let Dan know to tell Qiu Wen." Xue Ting comforted her as Pam finally nodded comfortably at ease.

At the sound of Dan's name, Xue Ting's heart was unsettled and she felt guilty for not being able to tell Pam the truth. That night, Dan forced his way home by sneaking out secretly from the hospital to ensure Pam would not worry despite he was still too weak and frail.

When he was back, he tried to act normal. Ever since Pam lived in with Brisbane at his place, he had been preparing meals for them. Due to being a little weak, he was slower than usual. He only realised that when Brisbane had gone into the kitchen upon reaching home with Pam to greet him excitedly.

"Daddy!!!" She squealed as she ran to hug Dan's leg at the sight of him in the kitchen stirring the porridge. Brisbane had grown very fond of him that she began to call him "daddy" too.

"Hey, sweetie! Dinner's almost ready. Go wash up and get ready alright?" He said weakly as Brisbane nodded awkwardly noticing his weak self but quickly shrugged it off and ran to the washroom. Pam knew something was not right by his voice as she went to the kitchen after putting down everything.

"Hey…" She gently called out and looked at his pale self. He tried to smile but nearly fainted as he drop to the ground in front of Pam.

"Dan! Dan, what's wrong?!" Pam panicked as she quickly close the stove and took out her phone while Dan was lying on her lap.

Brisbane returned to the kitchen and squatted next to Dan worriedly. "Daddy? Are you in pain? Where does it hurt?" Brisbane asked worriedly as Dan weakly reached out to her only for Brisbane to hold onto his hand.

"Don't worry Daddy. Help is on the way." Brisbane comforted which made unexpected tears sprung from Dan's eyes. He finally understood what it felt like to be a father and have a family on the brink of death. It was a whole new level of meaning. A part of him regretted what he did which only worries both mother and child even more and bring more trouble to everyone.

Pam quickly called for emergency help before reaching out to Xue Ting to help out with taking care of Brisbane. Xue Ting and Qiu Wen rushed back to the hospital to find Dan being admitted back to the hospital and put on bed rest for the rest of the week.

"Who told you to self-discharge? Pang Xiao Zhi, you don't want to live anymore, is it?! Do you know how serious your condition is? You missed your daily insulin dosages for nearly a week and yet you drove home with hypoglycemia! You don't want to live anymore, at least be responsible towards them!" Qiu Wen vented as Xue Ting held on to Qiu Wen to get him not to go overboard but it was useless as he already did.
