Chapter 25: "Mummy..." Did I hear it right?

Qiu Wen was beginning to wonder if it was really time to tell Xue Ting about James. He hesitated many times as he didn't want to break her heart. Besides, he was a little selfish as he had been enjoying her company at his house making it less lonely.

She had been running errands around their home as they settled in without having him make any requests and even when he had a housekeeper. She was more accommodating than angry at him like she first was with the sudden arrangements and he even caught her being smitten with him.

However, he could sense her resentment most of the time especially when Matthew was around. He could understand it was her way of respecting her son trying to protect her which made Qiu Wen ponder even more on his decision to let Xue Ting know about James soon or should he continue on to hide the secret as he couldn't predict the way the news would impact all of their lives.

As Xue Ting's injury from the incident at the hospital was still healing, she still couldn't enter the kitchen to help out with the baking of the overwhelming cupcakes order. She was glad to receive news that Lily was stable again and was looking forward to seeing her but she was too occupied to drop by for a short while especially after the recent new orders were taken up by Macy and Xiao Ji.

The business was small initially with Macy in charge of the counter and Xiao Ji in charge of the kitchen. After all, they only serve some local delicacies and cupcakes were their main income which made them famous. As for Xue Ting's role, it overlapped with both of their tasks. She was in fact their assistant when she was first hired.

While Xue Ting was busy handling her household matters lately, the cafe had a collaboration request from Wai Tao's famous office block bakery which was Dan's bakery called Wheels. Macy and Xiao Ji knowing it will help to boost the cafe's business instantly agreed without Xue Ting's knowledge as they didn't expect the order to be overwhelming and demanding.

When Xue Ting learned about it, she had no choice but to accommodate the demand as she knew Macy and Xiao Ji meant well for the business. However, she too slowly noticed the rush to make the two hours return trip delivery to Wai Tao was tiring her out in addition to her hectic Fridays to Sundays nights sending orders to functions. She was cracking her brain to think of ways to resolve it alone when the twins came into the cafe.

"Xiao Ji, sorry you have to do everything in the kitchen alone instead. My hands are almost well. I will…" Xue Ting apologised to Xiao Ji.

"Xue Ting, how long have you known me? Don't apologise. Accidents do happen. Don't worry. Besides, it's us who should be sorry. We should have asked you before we accept such a big order. You're doing us a big favor by sending the cupcake orders to Wai Tao daily. It's really a surprise they wanted to work with us but we never expected they refuse to pay us delivery cost and is demanding for our recipe on the rainbow cupcakes to save on that!" Xiao Ji interrupted Xue Ting as she knew Xue Ting felt guilty but that would only make Xiao Ji and Macy even more guilty.

"Xiao Ji is right! Could you hurry up with the table orders, Xiao Ji? There's a queue already! And I need to use the washroom!" Macy said while rushing into the kitchen after listening to them both while attending to the cashier.

"I will help you out with the cashier for a while!" Xue Ting offered before rushing out as Macy smiled and nodded while rushing to the washroom.

"Oh, and who is that little girl? She has been very obedient and quiet. With the recent gossip news of your twins, is she your husband's daughter with another mother?" Macy teased in the midst of entering the washroom. Xue Ting chuckled.

"No! Come out quick if you want to know!" Xue Ting yelled back before heading out to clear the cashier orders first. When there wasn't any more queue, Xue Ting then returned to the kitchen while Macy was helping out Xiao Ji.

"Soon, it's going to tire us all out, especially Xue Ting. We should really hire a driver so that it wouldn't trouble her. Besides, when the orders are low, the driver can help to do maintenance." Xiao Ji said as Macy thought about it when Xue Ting entered the kitchen.

"You're right! Alright, I will suggest it to Xue Ting later." Macy said as she went on to wash the dishes.

"What is it?" Xue Ting asked as she stepped into the kitchen to pack the ready cupcakes.

"Who's that little girl? You have had so many surprises lately, especially after you're married… you still haven't told us about the sudden marriage? When did you start dating? Are those your twin's father? Is that really his daughter with another woman?" Macy teased again as Xue Ting chuckled.

"No… It's his friend's daughter. They had an accident so we had to look after her." Xue Ting explained briefly, not wanting to let out so much.

"Oh dear, poor girl. Hope all is well?" Xiao Ji lamented and forgot about her question about Qiu Wen.

"Better I guess. We are waiting for news to allow Brisbane to visit her mother." Xue Ting further explained.

"Ah, I see. Alright, I shall give her some cupcakes to cheer her up!" Macy said before heading to the yard to play with Brisbane while the ladies chuckled.

Macy and Xiao Ji both forgot again to tell Xue Ting about their idea of hiring a driver. Xue Ting walked closer to Macy and Brisbane as she stood watching Brisbane enjoying the cupcake.

"Sicily!" Brisbane greeted Xue Ting upon noticing her at the door. Brisbane stood on the chair for Xue Ting to carry her.

"Hi, sweetie! Have you been enjoying yourself?" Xue Ting replied as Brisbane giggled.

She nodded briefly while nibbling on some cupcake crumbs.

"Brisbane, how old are you?" Macy asked nonchalantly. Brisbane put out her fingers and counted from one to five. "Five!"

"Ah, I see. Five years old. Have you gone to school before?" Macy asked as Brisbane nodded.

"But at the new place, I don't go to school yet. Mummy says it's not safe." Brisbane explained innocently which breaks Xue Ting's heart as she winced while looking away from Brisbane.

Macy noticed it but knew she shouldn't pry about what was going on. Hence, she tried to keep the conversation more casual. "Brisbane, what do you think of going back to school nearby Joy and Matthew?" She asked as Xue Ting blinked nervously waiting for her answer.

"Can I?" Brisbane thought for a while before asking in return as both Xue Ting and Macy nodded in unison.

"Mummy… MuMummy…" Brisbane then called out as she burrowed herself further into Xue Ting's hug. For a moment, Xue Ting's heart skipped a beat thinking Brisbane was addressing her as her mummy but then shrugged that thought away.

"Alright let's ask your mummy first before we register you?" Xue Ting comforted as Brisbane nodded while Macy smiled and patted Brisbane's back.

"Make sure you rest well Xue Ting. You have been way too busy. Tonight's gala dinner try not to take so much order." Macy said.

"I try as it seems we are highly on demand lately in Wai Tao. Don't worry I will let the twins look after her later when I have to go to the event." Xue Ting said assuring Macy she had everything sorted out.

"You should find time to speak with the bakery owner in Wai Tao 'cause he has been looking for you several times," Macy said as Xue Ting nodded watching Macy rushing back into the kitchen.

After ensuring Brisbane was playing alone well and the lunch crowd had subsided, Xue Ting then went to search for the name card that was passed to her. She saw the name on it was Dan Pang Xiao Zhi, director of Wheels bakery. She noticed the outlet was at the Grande building which is where Qiu Wen's office is in Wai Tao. She put on hold the thought of calling him just yet without any solid solution.

As she pondered on the cafe's matter, a text message was received from Qiu Wen. He was informing her that he wouldn't be home early due to a gala dinner he had to attend that night. She smiled as she knew she would be seeing him tonight. She decided to keep it a surprise before checking on Brisbane. When she saw Brisbane was asleep only then did she realise it was nearly two in the afternoon. The front door's bell chimed as the twins walked in, returning from school.

"Mummy, you should hurry up. There will be a massive jam as I heard the gala tonight is really prestigious." Joy said as Xue Ting walked over and crouched to straighten Brisbane's hair who was asleep by the bench where Joy stood. Matthew quickly went to attend to the cashier counter after he nodded at Xue Ting indicating his silent greeting as his sister was already occupying Xue Ting's attention.

"Oh… Right, your daddy is there too. I will get ready. Could you help me take care of this little one? She was so bored without her puppies…" Xue Ting said to Joy while looking at Brisbane.

Joy then nodded. "Mummy try the lime green dress I made." Joy persuaded knowing it would look stunning on her mother to accompany Qiu Wen tonight.

"Hmm… Not today. Let's go with something simpler with a shorter length. I am in a hurry... Take care, babies! Make sure you three eat on time please!" Xue Ting said as she rushed home while the kids waved at her. It left Joy a little disappointed but she knew her mother had her own reasons. She also believes eventually Xue Ting will wear it on other occasions and she would finally get to see her mother wearing one of her finest creations.

Xue Ting was only left with two hours to get dressed up after loading the cupcakes onto the truck. She rushed to put on a formal overall before making the delivery.
