Chapter 31: Guilty of calling "Mummy"

Qiu Wen noticed Xue Ting's discreet reaction as he wondered what she was discussing with Grandma when he walked over to her.

"You're alright? What did Grandma speak with you about?" He asked as she regain her composed self and shook her head.

"Nothing much just that she would like to come to visit every week and was…" She purposely paused to see his reaction.

He unexpectedly chuckled. "What?" He asked as she smiled.

"... asking for a grandchild…" She said as he gently patted her head.

"Sorry to keep them pestering you that way…" He apologised as she shook her head.

"It's alright for me but you ought to think about what to do when our remaining contract timing of four months or less is up?" She reminded him of how fast time had passed in their marriage as he sighed looking at her worriedly while nodding.

As the old ones left briefly after lunch to rest, Qui Wen was reading in the corner of the cafe with Brisbane while the twins helped out with waitressing inside. Brisbane, feeling restless went to check on both puppies in the yard. Her gentle caress on Autumn made him sit down by her side calmly as Dolly was running around her.

A sudden thought struck Brisbane when the smell of baking cupcakes from the kitchen wafted to her nose. She was reminded of tea time with Pam as she began to tear up, finding herself missing Pam. She couldn't withstand the feeling which made her run to find Xue Ting in the kitchen.

"Mummy!" She sobbed hugging Xue Ting and not wanting to let her off. Xue Ting who was half busy cracking eggs had to let Macy take over before washing her hands at the sink. She carried Brisbane outside the yard to calm her down as Qui Wen panic a little at the sight and went over. Xue Ting shook her head indicating for him to not come any closer. Xue Ting then gently patted Brisbane's back as she sat with her on the bench.

Hearing Brisbane calling her mummy wasn't the first time. Sometimes, she wondered if Brisbane was addressing herself as mummy or if she was referring to Pam but it wasn't important at that moment.

Qui Wen then walked over to give Xue Ting Brisbane's water bottle and some tissues. He brought along a cupcake on a plate. He left them all by her side on the bench while she was still cradling Brisbane who was sobbing.

"Thank you…" Xue Ting whispered as Qiu Wen gently patted Brisbane's back.

Brisbane calmed down a little but continued to cry while hugging Xue Ting the moment she saw the cupcake on the plate. Xue Ting noticed the source of her crying as she put the cupcake away further aside and took her water bottle for her.

"Drink some water." She gently instructed as Brisbane obediently drank some.

"It's alright, baby. I'm here. Uncle Ryan is here too. What is it? Why do you cry suddenly? Could you tell me what's wrong?" Xue Ting coaxed.

Brisbane pointed at the cupcake. "You want some?" Xue Ting asked as Brisbane nodded.

Qiu Wen then sat next to them on the bench and fed her some as Brisbane eventually took the plate and munched on Xue Ting's lap.

"Mum bakes cupcakes for me too on tea time," Brisbane suddenly said sadly as Xue Ting gently patted Brisbane's back.

Xue Ting's eyes reddened but she held back her tears. "Do you want to give her a call?" Xue Ting asked as Brisbane shook her head. "She needs to rest," Brisbane said understandingly which made Xue Ting hug her and wiped away her own tears as Qiu Wen held Xue Ting by her shoulders to comfort her.

"We are going to visit her tomorrow, Brisbane." Qiu Wen said as Brisbane's face lighted up.

"Really?" She asked as Qiu Wen nodded with a smile.

He then carried her over to his lap. "Shall we go get her something since we will be visiting her tomorrow?" Brisbane nodded eagerly as she finally smiled. Qiu Wen made eye contact with Xue Ting as they left while Xue Ting nodded in acknowledgment feeling relief for a moment watching them leave.

In the car, Brisbane felt bad as she thought to herself about the trouble she had been giving to Xue Ting and Qiu Wen. She was worried that they would dislike her like her grandparents and relatives back then as she pouted.

When they reach the florist store, Qiu Wen noticed Brisbane's pout.

"What's wrong? We have reached to get your mum some flowers." He said as he gently combed her hair.

"I'm sorry. I'm always so troublesome to everyone." Brisbane said sadly with her head facing down her lap. It sent Qiu Wen into panic for a moment.

"What makes you say so? None of us ever thought you are that, Brisbane." Qui Wen carried her to his lap instead.

"Sweetie, you know how much joy you have brought to the twins, Sicily and me?" He tried to coax her but she pouted even more.

"You called her mummy, didn't you?" Brisbane took a peep at Qiu Wen fearing he was going to scold her but when she saw his smile, she slowly nodded.

"Do you want her to be your mummy too?" She nodded again but pouted even more as though on the verge of crying when the thoughts of possibilities of disagreements from the adults hovered over her.

"Why? Don't cry… I'm sure Sicily will be alright with it... We just need to ask your mum and Uncle Dan about it tomorrow. I'm sure they will be fine. Don't cry, sweetie." He helped her wipe her tears away with tissues as she cling to him and sniff.

"Do you like Uncle Dan?" He asked to distract her as she nodded and smiled recalling the times she played with him.

"He is the greatest person ever! He protects Mum well. I like him like I like you, Joy, Matthew, and mummy…" Her words trailed off as though still afraid to address Xue Ting as "mummy".

Qiu Wen patted her head. "Then let's get a bouquet for your mum and mummy?" She nodded happily as they alight the car while she ran into the florist store. Qiu Wen smiled while reminding himself to let Dan know about Brisbane's compliment on him later.

That night, after Qiu Wen dreadfully pulled himself to drive away from the family, Xue Ting was fulfilling her promise to Brisbane to spend time with her and the twins after a busy weekend. Receiving another bouquet though it was from Brisbane made her wonder if Qiu Wen was compensating her for the times when he failed to confess to her.

"Sicily, hurry! The cartoon's going to start!" Squealed Brisbane excitedly as the twins rushed over with their spread of dinner prepared by Xue Ting. They even had mango and guava which Xue Ting bought from the night market with long beans and egg fried rice that night. Xue Ting quickly shrugged away her overthinking to join the kids.

"Alright, alright baby! Coming!" Xue Ting rushed over right on time when the cartoon started as Brisbane sat on her lap while she sat in between the twins.

As for Qiu Wen, he was rather agitated about not spending his time with his family but instead was sitting in the middle of a pretentious so call business dinner with his mother, Qiu Yeh, his grandparents, and Wei's family once again.

He texted Jia Yi to be on standby outside of the restaurant earlier as he planned to leave early and the best way was to have Jia Yi barge in pretending to tell him of something urgent.

"It's such a pleasure to have the family gathering once again." Mrs. Tang toasted to the Wei's family who were actually playing along. The Tangs were much richer in their wealth compared to the Weis and to keep them close allies would do good to their business even if it meant selling their daughter away for marriage in such a cheap way. As long as Francesca was willing to, the old couple was willing to go all the way without any hesitation.

"Yes, looks like we should start talking about when exactly are the kids to settle down?" Mrs. Wei commented as Mrs. Tang chuckled leaving Qiu Wen agitated. Qiu Yeh had to press down on his brother's leg to make him sit back on his chair to calm him down and prevent him from leaving.

"Yes, since we are gathering, I really think we should talk about the dates to get an engagement dinner?" Mrs. Tang added more fuel to the enraging fire of Qiu Wen.

Qiu Wen knew it was an important meal for Qiu Yeh as they were signing the deal for additional capital from the Wei's family. As a businessman, Qiu Yeh would never reject money and additional funds cause he could use it to his advantage to control the Wei even more.

"Why don't we get the contract signed first since we are both meant to be family sooner or later?" Qiu Yeh suggested and it was a warning to Qiu Wen to control his impatience as Mr. Wei laughed.

"Young people… always so impatient. Sure, I like your word! Sooner or later." Mr. Wei said as he took the contract Qiu Yeh passed over via the waiter and signed it. Qiu Yeh then double-checked the contract when it was returned to him before signing it as well.

"Perfect. All good. Thank you, Mr. Wei. Now, let's dig in while you all continue discussing the family matters." Qiu Yeh suggested and that was Qiu Wen's cue to leave.

Qiu Wen quickly send Jia Yi a text message as he urgently barged into the dining room moments later and pretended to whisper to him.

"Sorry everyone, something urgent came up. I got to go. Enjoy." Qiu Wen excused himself without waiting for any response as he rushed out of the room with Jia Yi.

It was indeed upsetting the Wei's as Mrs. Tang laughed pretentiously. "Sorry, young ones are always so busy. So, as we were discussing… What dates do you have in mind?"

"Mrs. Tang, instead of dates, let's have my daughter join his company to help him out. After all, she is a very competent lady. I am sure she would be of great help." Mr. Wei didn't miss to seize the chance to also try and gain control of the investment he just made.

Qiu Yeh though was pissed at Mr. Wei's tricky way of doing business, kept his calm as he continue eating nonchalantly with his grandparents who were keeping quiet all the while. Qiu Yeh could even tell how upset the old ones were. Sometimes, it made him wonder if his mother was adopted.

"Sure, let's toast and call it a deal!" Mrs. Tang said as she was the only one who toasted to the Wei's. Francesca was no doubt the happiest person during that night's dinner.
