"I saw the news about your recent marriage to Qiu Wen and the twins' identity. Don't worry, I will protect the truth." Pam reassured as Xue Ting nodded and smiled.
"Thank you…" Xue Ting said awkwardly.
"Is their father…" Pam was trying not to ask but end up couldn't resist as Xue Ting shook her head.
"No, it's not Qiu Wen. It is with our best friend when we were younger but he doesn't know of their existence." Xue Ting explained briefly as she tried to change the topic.
"So, what are your plans after this?" Xue Ting asked abruptly after taking a deep breath.
Pam knew Xue Ting wasn't comfortable with the topic as she willingly follow her flow.
"I have agreed to help Dan at the bakery. We might only stay here till next week or at least till this little one settles down well in school. We will then move over to Dan's house in Wai Tao which is closer to the bakery he said." Pam explained as Xue Ting breathed a sigh of relief.
"That's really great, Pam. Is Dan someone you…" Xue Ting hesitated with her curiosity for a moment since she was also hesitant to tell her the truth about the twins' father's identity.
Pam understood Xue Ting's unfinished question and was willing to tell her the truth as she felt Xue Ting was the only closest person to her as a friend with whom she could finally share anything freely.
"Looks like we all have a secret or two…" Xue Ting joked trying to pass the topic noticing Pam was studying her.
"He confessed to a misunderstanding we had years ago with my best friend whom he broke up with. I … It's a little not right to start anything now though I am really glad to have him by my side." Pam explained as Xue Ting gently patted her shoulder.
"Thank you for sharing…" Xue Ting smiled.
"Sicily, feel free to share anything with me too. I want you to know that you're the closest friend I feel comfortable with other than Lilian to share anything with without worrying about betrayal and being judged." Pam explained as Xue Ting nodded.
"If only things were that simple…" Xue TIng said in her heart with a little disappointment.
"Take your time… Oh yes, if you're willing to learn baking, I could teach you and let you use the secret recipe we had in the cafe. Alright, it's not all that secret. It's just the rainbow dusting technique that makes it special. Besides, we are having issues with the delivery at the moment. So, if you're keen just let me know about it." Xue Ting offered.
"I won't mind that! I love baking in fact." Pam said excitedly as Xue Ting recalled when Brisbane cried over the fragrance of cupcakes baking which reminded her of Pam.
"Tha's wonderful! I remember Brisbane was also reminded of you when she smells the fragrance of cupcakes baking in the cafe one afternoon. I am sure you will master my recipe very well in a short time." Xue Ting praised as Pam blushed while the ladies chuckled together.
Stolen story; please report.
Both of them felt glad to have each other as they both were solutions to the other person's issues and it saved them a lot of trouble too. Xue Ting hopes Pam would be able to endure her arduous journey trying to leave her abusive husband.
The next day, Xue Ting then had a surprise visit at the cafe from Mr. and Mrs. Jang who had been curious about their long-serving manager's recent marital life. So they decided to drop by the cafe to have a look.
"Xue Ting, have you been well? Are the twins well?" Mr. Jang asked slowly as he sip his cup of tea on a corner in the cafe.
"Yes, yes. We all are well Uncle Jang. Don't worry. I know the news must have made both of you come today but rest assured, we are all fine." Xue Ting reassured them both while topping up their tea.
"Xue Ting, if you have difficulty don't keep it to yourself. We can always help. We always will." Mrs. Jang assured her as Xue Ting smiled and nodded.
"Don't worry Auntie Jang. Qiu Wen has been treating all of us well. News being news. They are out of control. Oh yes, speaking of which, our cafe has a new collaboration with a bakery in Wai Tao. We at the moment deliver the cupcakes in the morning over there but moving forward I am thinking of sharing the recipe with one of the bakers in the bakery." Xue Ting explained as Mrs. Jang looked at her worriedly.
"But that's the secret trade of your cupcake trademark Xue Ting…" Mrs. Jang complained as Xue Ting gently patted her hand to calm her down.
"Don't worry. The bakery is Qiu Wen's best friend bakery. So, it will be fine. At most, I will just come up again with something else nicer to sell here. Jang's Cove will never run out of business!" Xue Ting cheered as the old couple chuckled.
"Alright, we will not bother and let you handle it. Oh, by the way, Keith is already graduating soon from university. We asked him to come back and help out but he decided he wanted to try operating the same business there. We are still trying to ask him to move back… That boy is just so stubborn. The twins are also graduating high school soon isn't it?" Auntie Jang asked as she nibbled on some cookies.
"Yes, they are at the end of the year. Don't worry about Keith. Just let him do what he wants, Auntie Jang. It's good for the young ones to gain more experience. That way he can return here and run the place better than us." Xue Ting smiled as Auntie Jang chuckled.
"Only you could think of it that way… Alright, alright we will not worry anymore." Mrs. Jang concluded as the couple continued to chat with Xue Ting over lunch.
Qiu Wen and Dan went to gather at the bar that night cause it was Wednesday and Qiu Wen had his fatherly duties. As Matthew was performing at the bar while Joy was shopping materials for her orders, Pam's mother-in-law, Violet surprised the ladies at home and Brisbane with a visit.
Violet who had a soft side for Pam and Brisbane all this while was forced to dislike them in front of her husband and son as an act. In fact, she was very fond of them both that she arranged to search for them after learning of her son's recent assault on them both. She then came to visit them discreetly.
Xue Ting opened the door to an unfamiliar face but Brisbane instantly recognise her and began to cry.
"Sweetie, it's grandma. I'm here to see you and mum. Are you both well?" Violet asked adorably as she stepped in but Xue Ting who sensed something wasn't right then blocked her path.
"It's alright. Let her in, Sicily." Pam said from behind as she quickly went to comfort Brisbane first.
"It's alright, Brisbane. It's just Grandma, alone. So, it's alright." Pam said as Brisbane wiped her tears away while being carried by Pam.
Xue Ting turned around feeling uneasy but knowing she should let them talk, she invited Violet in and led her to the couch as she left Brisbane and Pam to talk with her.
Violet then realised how much she had missed Brisbane. Xue Ting went into the kitchen to make tea, feeling very worried. She quickly sent a text to Qiu Wen to alert him about the visit.
Qiu Wen upon receiving the text message quickly chased Dan home. "Quick head home first. Xue Ting just texted to inform Pam's mother-in-law is in my house. I have to wait for my son first. Drive home, go now." Qiu Wen chased without giving Dan a chance to speak.
The name "Pam's mother-in-law" was enough to send him on a sprint to the car and drove back to Qiu Wen's home hoping things would be alright. Meanwhile, the situation at home wasn't as bad as all of them thought to be.
"I'm sorry Pam…" Violet broke down in tears as it caught Pam by surprise. She passed Violet some tissues.
"I have never wanted to treat you both that way. I was lucky to have born a son to the family so I didn't know they would have such treatment on those who don't. Though I have heard about stories of the fates of his ex-wives who couldn't bear him a son, I never knew it was this way… I'm sorry…" Violet cried. Pam blinked back her tears and sighed as she gently patted Violet's back.
"Mother, I don't blame you…" Pam hugged her in tears as Brisbane then gently patted her grandma's shoulder. Xue Ting who stood hearing Violet's confession couldn't help but blink her tears away. She walked forward to serve them tea instead.
"Come, have some tea first to calm down." Xue Ting smiled as she serve them.
"Enjoy…" She gently said as she excused herself.
Xue Ting then walked away into her art room and closed the door as she was inspired to draw a reconciliation theme that night. As she sketched the first stroke of the cherry tree, Violet then continue to explain to Pam.
"I will help you with the divorce from my son 'cause I am also doing my own divorce. I want to protect both of you." Violet said before breaking down again as Pam was caught by surprise while she quickly handed Violet more tissues.
"Mother, there's no need to do that. You should fight for your own freedom. We both know it's not easy. I have my friends to help me. If you need help please let us know. You will always be my mother-in-law even after divorce, if you want, I would still accept you as my mother. No matter what, you're always Brisbane's grandma." Pam comforted as Violet sobbed in her arms.
