Chapter 110: A little angel amidst the chaos

Xue Ting rushed to get on the next available flight with Keith's assistance, who kept reminding her to slow down as she was pregnant. She exited the arrival hall and was greeted by two haggard-looking men. Both Qiu Yeh and Dan were glad to see her. When they saw her baby bump after not seeing her for just a fair three weeks, they were elated, nearly forgetting about their current tense situation.

"Xue Ting…" Qiu Yeh greeted as he eyed her blossoming belly while helping her with her small luggage. She nodded in acknowledgment to their questioning eyes.

"Hi." She smiled briefly before letting both men help out with even her handbag.

"How far along are you?" Dan asked in a little delicate tone.

"Eight weeks coming to nine in two days…" She was trying to keep herself calm but her anxious self was worried for the twins even more.

"Can we start moving to see the twins first?" She asked as they both nodded before leading her to the car.

They kept quiet the whole journey, knowing she was not in the mood to convey any news about her pregnancy and she must be very sensitive too.

"How's the twins doing?" She finally asked, in an impatient tone. "Matthew is recovering well but he was quite worried about Qiu Wen and also his sister," Dan explained.

"Why? What happened to Qiu Qiu?" She sat further to the front, almost wanting to face Dan anxiously.

"Xue Ting, don't worry. Pam and Brisbane are with her. She is a little traumatised by the incident. She managed to stabilise when Matthew was conscious." Xue Ting felt a little more relaxed.

She felt they were waiting for her next question which she wanted to act like she did not want to ask but she was actually dying to ask.

"What happened… How's Qiu Wen doing?" She finally asked as Qiu Wen who was trying to speed faster answered.

"He is still unconscious." That brought everyone's mood even lower.

"He was trapped in a chain locker room during a collision with Alshton where the anchor was kept which meant he could easily die from lack of oxygen…" Dan explained as Xue Ting held her head while Qiu Yeh shook his head discreetly to stop Dan from further explaining.

"No. Go on… How did it happen? Tell me everything…" Xue Ting insisted as Dan explained everything to her before they reached the hospital.

"Don't worry. I promise you this time. I will press charges on him regardless if it was because of Brisbane or not." Dan said with conviction as Xue Ting quickly alighted and instantly dashed to the ward number Dan gave her.

She did not want to care about the aftermath as her family members were all still down but she trusted both men to know what was best. She was glad when she received a text message from May at the same time, confirming her return the next day to look after the twins for her as she had to rush back again to complete her last week of lessons.

A sigh of relief dawned on her when she saw Joy sitting next to Matthew comforting her for refuge just like when she was young. But she knew, they were disguising their struggles.

"Qiu Qiu. Xin Xin… Are you both alright?" She smiled a little trying to liven up the mood and opened her arms to hug them.

They both choked on their words at the sight of her as they started to weep in her arms.

"Mummy!" They both called out repeatedly.

"It's alright, mummy's here now. Don't worry babies. It's alright." She comforted as she felt one of them was caressing her baby bump.

She looked at the arm which was Joy's. "Mummy…" Their gaze met with each other and with Matthew's.

"Yes… it is coming to nine weeks old." She whispered as she raised an eyebrow, sensing it did not satisfy them.

"It's daddy's." They both hugged her tighter and wept even more. She could finally understand the reason she was called to return. She could feel their intense worries, agony, and fear for Qiu Wen while she rocked them gently.

At some point, Brisbane came in eagerly to meet Xue Ting with Pam followed by Dan and Qiu Yeh. While Brisbane who had just returned from her therapy session wanted to greet Xue Ting, watching the twins wept, she could not help but be overwhelmed and cried too.

Pam and Dan quickly went to comfort her outside while Qiu Yeh stood by the side of the door, giving the twins the privacy they needed with Xue Ting. Grandma caught sight of the entire situation when she came out of Qiu Wen's room. She knew her favorite granddaughter was back when she heard the loud sobs from the twins' ward as she stood with Qiu Yeh quietly while waiting for the children to calm down.

Xue Ting gently patted them both, trying to coax them to calm down. "It's alright. It's all over now. It must have been very terrifying?"

They both nodded.

"The both of you were very brave. It was an accident. So don't blame yourself, especially you." She eyed Matthew.

"Not everything is your fault. You're not the only guy in this family anymore. You're not the eldest of the twins either." Xue Ting caught herself off guard half scolding Matthew as she tried controlling herself.

"So, stop being so harsh with yourself. The both of you…" She toned down her voice before tickling them a little as they giggled.

Joy quickly gave her an envelope from her bag as Xue Ting opened it and saw their paternity test. She was surprised but when she saw they both smiled with tears in their eyes, she knew they had accepted the facts well.

"When did you take this and why? For what reasons?" Xue Ting asked half agitated.

"Why didn't you tell us?" Joy asked before her voice cracked.

"Great-grandma collected the results for us. We had forgotten about it after taking it weeks ago. Mummy, listen. Before you get angry, Daddy suspected that we were his and told us about it. We just thought we wanted to try the test for fun but we didn't know…" Matthew's words trailed off as he started to sob again thinking of the scene he had to save Qiu Wen earlier.

"You never wanted to tell us, did you? Yet he saved us without knowing that we were his biological children. How could you mummy?" Joy sobbed again as Xue Ting who initially wanted to vent a little of her anger and disappointment of them not trusting her, let her tears flow too.

"He already knew… I told him before I left. We just wanted to wait till we are all together to tell you both." Xue Ting comforted instead.

"How could you tell him only and not us?" Joy sulked as Xue Ting struggled to comfort them.

"I'm sorry… I'm sorry… I owe you both and Daddy an apology. You do understand why I had to hide this. It's too dangerous, babies. I cannot afford to let you both be harmed. Don't blame him. He didn't know earlier either…" Xue Ting explained as Joy pouted.

"So, you both accept the fact that he is your daddy that easily?" Xue Ting asked as they both nodded in unison unexpectedly.

"I'm surprised... I'm so surprised..." They both hugged her sensing she was being sarcastic on purpose and maybe a little jealous as she chuckled.

"Promise us, you will sort this out with Daddy?" Matthew pleaded as Xue Ting paused a moment to assess his seriousness and nodded with assurance.

"Have you seen Daddy yet?" Xue Ting asked as she wiped both of their wet faces with Matthew on her left and Joy on her right but she realised she asked the wrong question as their face got wetter.

"Alright, alright. I'm sorry. I ask the wrong question. Stop crying..." She took more tissues to wipe their faces and did not notice Grandma stepping in.

"Ting Ting…" Xue Ting was surprised for a moment thinking it was Qiu Wen but it was a lady's voice when she paid more attention. She turned around and saw their smiling Grandma as Joy went to hug her.

"Great Grandma!!" Qiu Qiu ran over to hug her overjoyed.

"Good girl. Don't worry. Your daddy is recovering well. We hope he can gain consciousness soon. All thanks to you for being so brave to donate blood to him and lucky he was in the room for a while only…" Joy smiled as Grandma wiped her tears for her.

"Grandma…" Xue Ting stood showing her baby bump.

Grandma sighted her and nodded but was elated to see her baby bump as well. "How many weeks are you?" She went over to rub her bump. "Almost nine weeks."

"Did he know?" Grandma asked as Xue Ting shook her head with a solemn face. Grandma showed a frown for a moment before taking a seat.

"Don't worry… don't worry… I will let you all visit him so that he can recover quickly when he knows all this news." She sat next to Matthew and helped him wipe his wet face with tissues.

"Your mother is right. You're not the eldest and you're not the only man in the family. Don't be so tough…" Grandma told Matthew.

Matthew nodded solemnly. "Yes, great grandma…"

"Good great grandchildren… I can't wait for him to be awake. So much good news…" Grandma laughed as Qiu Yeh stood by the entrance eyeing Xue Ting while giving her a reassuring smile. Xue Ting knew she had to speak with him soon but her next concern was her little step daughter.

She excused herself to look for Brisbane who was still sniffing in Pam's arms. She went over to sit with Brisbane who plunged into her arms instantly.

"Mummy… I miss you…" Pam was by their side as Xue Ting smiled at Pam while gently caressing her hair.

"I miss you too baby… you have been a very brave girl. Don't worry alright? It's not your fault. Everyone will be alright…" Xue Ting tried assuring her.

Brisbane then held her belly, a little confused as Pam and Xue Ting chuckled.

"How many weeks are you…" Pam asked as Xue Ting showed her nine fingers. "Still early…" Xue Ting said as Pam smiled and nodded.

"Are you fatter now mummy?" Brisbane asked as the ladies laughed. "No, sweetie. There's a baby inside. Soon you will get to meet another little boy or girl." Pam explained as Brisbane smiled.

"Oh, I want another baby brother! Then I can play with him like Joy plays with Matt Matt…" Brisbane exclaimed as the ladies chuckled together and chatted for a bit about her classes till Brisbane fell asleep.
