Chapter 19: Voluntary work

Chapter 19: Voluntary work

If it wasn't for May, Xue Ting would not have made it last to the delivery of the twins as she struggled to make a living at such a tender age to aid her younger brother, Wen Kang's studies in agriculture while skipping the chance to enter college to pursue fashion designing just for her twins. May spotted her talent and commissioned Xue Ting for her art to be sold in her art gallery.

Xue Ting was also lucky to have stumbled upon the current restaurant's elderly couple, Mr. and Mrs. Chung, who hired her as a full-time waitress and then paid her even during her maternity. They pitied her for having to go through a complicated pregnancy especially for a petite girl, carrying the twins toward the end of her pregnancy gave her lots of difficulties walking and most of the time, she was bedridden. She nearly lost the twins during the midterm due to a weak womb.

In return, she helped the old couple to manage the business for sixteen years. When her twins were delivered, they were her bundle of joy and motivation to nurture them and watch them grow.

However, as lucky as she thought she was, in life, nothing was this much of a coincidence. May had felt guilty about her dishonesty all those years. Although she was sent by Qiu Yeh to be of help to Xue Ting in various ways in the very beginning when Xue Ting first left James and Qiu Wen, after sixteen years, Xue Ting had become May's one and only best friend. What started out as a staged coincidence and fake connection turned out to be the most genuine ever friendship they both could ever ask for.

To avoid letting Xue Ting hurt even more, she decided to keep the secret to herself and even more reasons to not let Xue Ting know about how exactly Qiu Yeh felt for her all those years. Sometimes love finds itself in many different ways and for Qiu Yeh, it was protecting her discreetly, and watching her live in happiness was sufficient.

The following week was a new month and on every first Monday of a new month, Xue Ting would head to the hospital where she delivered the twins year back for voluntary work. The bleached white painted building of the hospital, though shone by the scorching sunlight, often still appeared a little gloomy to Xue Ting. Her heart would always ache, recalling her purpose of visiting here all these years.

Nana, a nurse she was familiar with over the years she served here, appeared from the hallway as she was about to enter the kid's playroom.

"Mdm. Tang!" Xue Ting was taken aback by the way she addressed her today as she frowned.

"Sicily, please." Xue Ting sternly stated.

"Why so serious? You're married to a Mr. Tang after all." Though slightly agitated by the fact, Xue Ting couldn't deny Nana was right as she gave a tight smile.

"Alright, alright. Jokes aside, Dean Lee is looking for you. I will look after the class while you're away. Go ahead." Nana returned to the playroom as Xue Ting walked down the hallway to meet the Dean.

A knock on the door startled Dean Lee as she instructed the knocker to enter.

Xue Ting opened and closed the door swiftly as Dean Lee watched her in delight walking to her desk.

"Sicily! I have been expecting you… Or should I address you as Mdm. Tang?" Dean Lee greeted.

"No, no, please. Keep it to Sicily will do." Xue Ting faked a smile trying to hide her agitation as Dean Lee waved for her to take a seat.

"I'll cut short the conversation since you have a class to attend. I wish to know if you have any intention of quitting considering your new marital status?" Dean Lee spoke in a formal manner.

This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.

Xue Ting was not surprised at how fast news spread but rather at how fast events could turn around." No, I don't. Absolutely not. Why would you think I will?"

"Well, it is voluntary work after all. First, to repay in kind for the guilt you had owed the hospital for a while after your delivery but even so, the bad debts were already paid for over the years inclusive of your voluntary work. No reason for you to stay any further considering the change in your quality of life recently." Dean Lee explained herself.

Xue Ting sighed. "Not like this. At first yes I did it due to the guilt. But over the years I grew fond of the work and its meaning. I have grown accustomed. The meaning behind the work I do is the purpose I want to continue." Xue Ting never wavered at finally being able to give back to society and help make other people's lives better.

Satisfied, Dean Lee nodded."Good. You may continue to serve and am very glad to still have you."

"Thank you, Dean Lee. Without your help, I wouldn't have been where I am." Xue Ting smiled politely.

"If there isn't anything else, I will head back to the class?" Xue Ting asked to excuse herself before leaving when Dean Lee nodded.

"Oh yes, in fact, yes. You have been teaching them English and Art all this while. Was thinking if you could integrate some Maths or Science perhaps? Some parents said their kids weren't fond of just Art. They were more of the mathematical type." Dean Lee elaborated.

"Sure why not? I was also thinking the same. Perhaps puzzles instead of Art could help as well?" Dean Lee nodded at Xue Ting's suggestion.

"Alright, I will go ahead and do the preparations." Xue Ting stood to take her to leave when Dean Lee forgot another thing.

"Xue Ting…" She turned around knowing it wasn't an official matter when the Dean addressed her by her Chinese name.

"Congratulations!" Dean Lee wished sincerely. "Thank you." Xue Ting smiled.

"Is he… your twins' father?" Dean Lee didn't hesitate to ask as Xue Ting could only smile wider and nod to leave which gave Dean Lee an open interpretation.

The voices of excited kids filled the kids' playroom as she stepped in.

"Alright, kids! Settle down. Let's start our lesson today!" She took her seat in front of the young ones who were sitting on the mat.

"Good afternoon everyone." Xue Ting greeted.

"Good afternoon Ms. Sicily!" Everyone greeted in unison.

"Today we are going to change our lesson plan a little. Some of you love maths and science isn't it?" She could see some of their eyes brighten up.

She thanked her lucky stars that she was about to introduce science rocket as her new subject today where she could easily integrate maths and science into them.

She said, "Let's begin, shall we? Here in this picture, who can tell me what is this?"

"Rocket!", shouted an excited boy with confidence. She recognised him, Charles, who had anxiety because of his strict upbringing, and at nine, his family members, fortunately, realised they should fix him.

"That's right! Thank you, Charles." Xue Ting praised.

She went on, "Today's new vocabulary we are learning is" Rocket". So where does a rocket go?"

"To the outer space…" "Space…" There were mixed responses from all six kids.

"That's right. Space or known as outer space as well. What is there in space?"

Six eager and questioning faces looked right back at her. She didn't expect them to know either since many of them were here treating anxiety at a relatively tender age and lessons in school were often disrupted.

"Come on, give it a try?", she coaxed.

"Moon…" Lily the little girl who had anxiety because of her father's accident gave a surprising answer. Xue Ting didn't expect her to participate much but it was definitely an improvement.

"That's right, Lily." Xue Ting smiled as Lily giggled.

"Earth!" Charles shouted again.

"Correct Charles! Looks like you're very excited… What is Earth known as?" Xue Ting eyed the other four; three boys and another girl.

Ann, Panira, Yopilai and Tommy.

They each had their own sad story. Xue Ting knew they knew the answer but they were too shy to speak up.

"Let's give you a clue. It starts with a" P" and ends with a "T". Panira, can you tell me?" Xue Ting coaxed.

He chirped as he eyed Xue Ting who was smiling, "...planet."

"That's right, Panira. Let's clap for him!"

Xue Ting stood to show the formation chart of the different planets. "Here we have eight known planets, used to be nine. Want to know why? Let's get to know one in every lesson alright?" The kids nodded with glee even the shy ones.

Xue Ting counted her blessings for having Joy help her with the artwork before this.

"Let's start with the first one. It's called Mars. It's not bright red but it is a maroon colour. It's the first planet in the orbit. Now, I will add more vocabulary here for our English class and explain them later." Xue Ting spoke as she began the list with maroon, planet, and orbit while she thought she heard a soft sob.

She turned around to check on them six and they seemed fine so she went back to the chart of planets. She was subconsciously aware Lily had issues with red as she paid closer attention to her. Nana who was watching from outside noticed Xue Ting sensed something was amidst as Xue Ting signaled for Nana to enter.

"Alright, let's move on to the next lesson instead. It's drawing time!" Xue Ting announced as some of the kids cheered. Nana then guided the kids to the art and puzzles sections while Xue Ting guided Lily to an empty desk and drew with her an apple.

At first, Lily hesitated but when she heard Xue Ting say they could use pencils to shade them or color them green, she let Xue Ting guide her left hand. Xue Ting could feel the little girl begin to relax into her as she let her lean in on her. Her motherly instinct was telling her something was amiss as she let her guard up on high alert.
