Chapter 45

Saneko put her hand to her mouth as she yawned, walking to school on an ordinary day. Like every other day, she just hoped that today would give her ample room to show off. That was the only thing she was currently thinking about. Her mind was so preoccupied with those thoughts, that she didn't notice the pairs of eyes that were watching her every move from various hidden positions. One of those people had a walkie talkie that he spoke into.

"Target is on the move! Prepare to attack!"

Saneko, oblivious to the danger surrounding her, continued her leisurely stroll to school. She was humming a catchy tune from her favorite anime opening. One person that was watching her readied some poisoned darts, hiding in a bush, just waiting for her to pass by.

"Any second now..."

As Saneko began to pass by, he took careful aim and launched three darts in rapid succession. However, Saneko was still able to react to such attacks subconsciously, moving just enough to sidestep all of the darts without even realizing what she was doing.

"Dammit!"

It was clear by now that these were assassins. They were there for the same reason the other assassins were. The ones hat tried to kill her at the ice cream shop not too long ago. Raising the walkie talkie up, the assassin spoke into it.

"Target evaded. Moving to secondary position."

Meanwhile, on a rooftop two houses down, another assassin set up a high-powered sniper rifle. All of the assassins were aware of the previous assassination attempt on Saneko. They all knew that it was attempted via a sniper, and they were also aware of the fate the two men that attempted it suffered. Nevertheless, the assassins didn't seem to care. They considered the previous attempt anecdotal.

Just as the sniper tightened his grip on the trigger, a bird landed on the barrel of her rifle, causing it to dip slightly. The bullet struck the pavement inches from Saneko's feet, who remained completely unaware of what was happening.

"What the hell? Damn bird!"

With a disgruntled look, the sniper looked back into the scope and tracked Saneko again, hoping her could shoot her before she got out of range. She was still walking, but something caught her attention and caused her to stop in her tracks. Her eyes filled with excitement when she saw a tabby cat on the road.

"KITTY!"

Saneko quickly picked up the cat who was a bit surprised, but didn't really get upset. It was too distracted by her horns. It tried to swat at her horns a few times, but Saneko didn't take offense to this, she just loved cats so much.

"Hehehehe~ So fluffy!"

Saneko began to pet the cat roughly. The one thing that could always break her out of her Demon Babe personality was an adorable kitten. She already had Dyinglight at home, and while she liked to pet it from time to time, this didn't stop her from getting excited every time she saw another cat. When it came to cats, her excitement was so overwhelming, that she put all of her focus on to it, not even bothering to react to anything else, which gave the sniper the perfect opportunity to strike.

He grinned and pressed the trigger down. The bullet soared through the air, and struck Saneko right in the back of the head, but she didn't notice. The bullet flattened against her head and fell to the ground, not leaving a scratch on her. The sniper, noticing Saneko hadn't taken any damage, was left bewildered.

"Did I miss?"

He looked into the scope again and fired once more, but, just like before, the bullet essentially bounced off of her head. He kept firing, but the same thing repeated over and over again. Saneko shook her head, realizing that she had to continue going to school. She spoke to the cat in a baby voice and begrudgingly put it back on the ground before waving bye to it.

"Goodbye kitty witty. I have to get going now."

The cat meowed a bit, and Saneko felt all warm and fuzzy inside upon hearing it. As she continued walking, the sniper sighed and spoke into his walkie talkie.

"Looks like manmade weapons won't work. Let's use magic from now on. I think that's our best bet."

The homeowner then stepped out of the house and saw the assassin up there.

"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING ON TOP OF MY HOUSE?"

"AH!"

One assassin, who was hiding behind a car, had come up with a plan, just in case Saneko survived the other assassination attempts. The assassin was an expert in electricity magic, and prepared to send an electric current to Saneko when she stepped into a puddle that he had set up by pouring water on the ground. Saneko was still thinking about the cat with a smile on her face, too distracted to pay attention to where she was stepping. When she stepped in the puddle, the assassin immediately peaked out from behind the car and shot a blast of electricity at her. He was incredibly powerful, and he put all of his strength into the blast itself. There was at least 50 billion volts of electricity being channeled directly at Saneko, that would then be amplified tenfold by the water. Once the electricity hit Saneko, she stood still, looking a bit confused.

"Did I just get some static electricity on me? Eh, must have been from the cat's fur."

The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

When she started walking again, the assassin couldn't believe it. That attack would have charred anything to a burnt crisp, but there she was, walking it off like it was absolutely nothing.

"How did she-"

Another assassin who was also on top of a house, shook his head as he watched with binoculars. He took out his own walkie talkie and made a direct statement.

"We are not going to play this game. Don't hold back. Everyone, use your most powerful abilities right off the bat. I'll go first, so all of you need to retreat for now."

With that, he put the walkie talkie back into his pocket and went first. He snapped his fingers, and a shockwave rippled through the air. Thankfully, no one else besides Saneko was near that area at the moment, because the ability he just used was called, "Remove". This ability, just as the name suggests, permanently removes someone's power. It wasn't limited to just cultivation either. Those who had gifts such as being able to run fast or jump high, would automatically lose that gift. They would essentially be transformed into a very weak normal human.

The shockwave hit Saneko, and the assassin took the opportunity to pull out a pistol he had around his waist. He was extremely talented when it came to aiming, so he simply raised the gun and shot it with no scope or anything, This would have killed Saneko as Remove also erases anyone's durability, whether it be natural or cultivated. The bullet hit her in the back, but just like every other time, it simply bounced off of her, doing nothing.

"IMPOSSIBLE!"

The assassin had used this ability as his trump card for years. He had erased the abilities of many humans and beasts alike over the course of his life, and had never had anyone resist it in the slightest. Scientists had deduced that Remove had a 100% chance of erasing the opponent's abilities, even opponents who's abilities were tied to themselves, and therefore couldn't have them erased. It was seen as a cheat skill that was actually illegal. The Hero Foundation was taught to carefully execute people who were known to have and use this ability. Naturally, he refused to believe that this girl just walked right through it.

As Saneko was about to turn the final corner to get to her school, her disciple just so happened to be right there. His face lit up when he saw her there.

"DEMON BABE!"

"Ah, greeting disciple. What brings you here this early in the morning?"

"I was going to play basketball."

He held up the new ball that Saneko had bought for him a little while back.

"Oh I see. Have you continued practicing your fire magic?"

"Yeah! Wanna see?"

"Indeed."

Saneko was actually extremely excited to see what he could do. After all, the boy had learned from Saneko to be cocky when using his powers. He was essentially becoming a little version of her, and she loved that idea.

He reached his arm out dramatically, just like an anime character would, and created a fire tornado that reached up a little bit higher than a house. It was impressive for a boy his age. He must have truly been practicing a lot just to impress his idol, Demon Babe.

Saneko looked up in awe at the fire tornado. She did not find the ability impressive in the slightest, however, she loved his presentation while doing it.

"Congratulations! You are learning well."

"Thank you! That means so much to me!"

"Heh. Well I must go to scho- TO DEFEAT EVIL VILLAINS!"

The boy had an excited look on his face as he jumped up and down a few times.

"COOL! CAN I COME?"

"I'm afraid not. It's far too dangerous."

"Aww. Okay, well where are the villains anyway?"

Saneko scratched the back of her head, trying to come up with an answer.

"In... Beijing."

"Really?"

"Yeah."

"I didn't see anything on the news about beasts in Beijing. Are you sure it was there?"

Saneko was getting a bit frustrated at how he continued to ask questions.

"It's a shadow organization."

"YOU'RE FIGHTING A SHADOW ORGANIZATION?"

"... Yeah... um... yes! Very serious stuff. I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I must get going at once!"

"You're the coolest Demon Babe!"

Saneko felt pride in herself at that moment. She looked up to the sky and nodded.

"I am aren't I. Well anyway, I shall return after I finish doing whatever I said I was going to do."

She continued walking and the boy enthusiastically waved to her as she left.

"I know you can do it Demon Babe!"

One of the assassins was watching all of this happen, not knowing who that boy was, and why someone as powerful as Saneko would be talking to him, but it didn't matter. He ran out of where he was hiding and stomped on the ground as hard as possible, causing the timeline to stop entirely.

In this world, those who have extremely powerful abilities usually either work for the Hero Foundation, or turn to a life of crime. There isn't much use for cheat skills in this world, rendering most of them illegal. This specific assassin is proficient in time magic on such an immense scale that he would have the rank of "Time God". This rank is normally given to heroes, and not many people possess such powerful time-based abilities. The entire world stopped. People stood in place. Cars stopped in the middle of the road. Birds froze in the sky. But Saneko kept moving.

"N...no... th...this is impossible. Time is no longer linear. How is she moving?"

Saneko, like always, didn't even notice. She just continued her stroll down to school. The assassin wasn't dumb, so he didn't even bother anymore. He looked down, defeated, and let time resume, not wanting to deal with this girl anymore. He picked up his walkie talkie and spoke into it, resigning from the assignment.

"That's it. I give up."

All of the other assassin's heard his statement through their own walkie talkies and nodded. If she could resist both Remove, and the entire timeline coming to a halt, they too didn't want anything to do with her anymore.

The man who had taken over Dying Star sat in the throne comfortably, resting his cheek on one of his fists. He looked tired and was about to fall asleep. That was until the assassins from earlier entered the capital building of Dying Star, causing him to perk up and act like he wasn't tired.

"Oh... um... welcome."

The assassins, of which there were six, bowed before the throne.

"Master, We... we have failed in our mission. The target, she's... invincible."

"Why even bother trying to eliminate her in the first place?"

"For you master! We know how much you want her dead."

"I wish to kill her myself when she returns. I will not leave from this spot until that day arrives."

"But sir, she will kill you before you can do so much as lay a finger on her!"

"SILENCE!"

The assassin jolted a bit upon hearing the man's harsh tone. The assassin that had used Remove then spoke up.

"Sir, you underestimate her. She resisted Remove. She also resisted the flow of time being halted."

"Oh, so that's why time seemed to stand still."

"You noticed?"

"Of course. I am not weak enough to fall victim to such pathetic abilities. I am transcendent! I defy the laws of cultivation now! I find it baffling that you continue to believe that you lowly humans can defeat her. I am the only one who can do so."

The assassins looked at each other. They knew this man was strong, but they had no clue he was this strong. They started to feel a bit reassured.

"You truly are unbelievable master."

"Of course I am!"

He had copied Saneko down to a T. From her personality traits, to her taste in drinks, all the way down to her manner of speech. No doubt that had something to do with why he was so powerful.
