A decade had passed, although Saneko's personality did not change. In fact, it only grew worse due to her growing obsession with power fantasy anime. When one ended, she would frantically search for the next, and then the next, and this cycle had been repeating for years.
Saneko was now 19, and one day, she went to the nearby ice cream shop to get one of the banana smoothies she loved so much. She stood in line, tapping her foot impatiently while looking around the building. She was dressed lazily today, wearing a white t-shirt and black sweatpants.
"Next!"
The next person in line started ordering, and Saneko let out a sigh. As per usual, she kept to her own thoughts.
"Finally. The line is moving."
That person then left the line, and then the person in front of Saneko started ordering. Saneko took a step forward. The person had a relatively small order, so it didn't take them much more than 30 seconds to order it.
It was now Saneko's turn to order. Before she could speak, the cashier automatically recognized her by her unique appearance. She had become a regular in this shop as she would buy a banana smoothie at least three times a week.
"Ah let me guess. One large banana smoothie with extra whipped cream?"
"You know it."
"Coming right up."
Saneko left the line and leaned against a nearby wall, waiting patiently for her beloved smoothie. The employees would blend warm ingredients to make the items, but due to the powers most of the world had gained by now, they would use freezing abilities to make the smoothies and ice cream cold. Practically all former technological advancements had been thrown out of the window aside for phones, TVs, and some forms of vehicular transportation.
"One banana smoothie!"
Saneko immediately walked over the the cashier and placed a few dollars down and grabbed the smoothie.
"Thanks."
The familiar cold feeling of the cup against her hands was enough to make her excited. She began sipping from the straw, and feeling of bliss washed over her as she tasted what she considered to be the nectar of the gods.
But all good things must come to and end, as the door to the shop suddenly opened, and an unknown creature stepped foot inside. It appeared to be a llama with three heads and it caught everyone off guard.
One of the employees raised their index and middle fingers and put their hand up to their face, so their right eye was in-between the fingers.
"Reader!"
The employee's right eye flashed with a sudden burst of light.
"It's a level 5 beast!"
The other people in the shop started hiding underneath tables and behind chairs as the cashier called the police. Saneko was aware of the ranking system the world had created. If her memory served her correct, a level 5 beast at full power should be equivalent to a double barrel shotgun. Nothing she couldn't handle. A smirk formed on her lips as she thought that this was a perfect time to show off her powers and be the main character she had been wanting to be for a while.
As Saneko took a step forward towards the beast, she stopped as she realized she was still in her lazy clothes.
"Damn. I look so lame. How are people going to take Demon Babe seriously if I look like this."
Saneko weighed out the pros and cons in her head. The pros of stepping in where of course saving everyone, but she couldn't take the risk that people might not take her entirely seriously, which to her, was unacceptable. The heroic character Saneko wanted to be was entirely dictated on her wanting some form of attention for how "cool" she was.
She decided that it wasn't worth the risk, and she stood off to the sidelines as the beast walked around the shop. Even though she didn't want to catch the beast's attention at this point in time, it was impossible as she had horns and shiny hair no one else in the world did. The beast instantly turned to her as if she were a magnet.
Saneko stared at the beast as she sipped on her banana smoothie, not saying a word. The beast stared back with all three of its heads, and began walking closer to her. Saneko sighed as she stopped drinking the smoothie.
"Listen, I don't want to kill you right now, so just go away."
As if taking her words as a challenge, the beast spat at her. The projectile hit the smoothie in Saneko's hand, causing it to fall to the floor, spilling everywhere. Saneko stared down at the spilled smoothie. She was motionless for what felt like hours.
Finally, she looked back up at the monster, her expression entirely unreadable. Her right hand started radiating with purplish black aura. Without saying a single word, Saneko put her hand the beast's middle head, and just as she tapped it, it exploded into countless pieces, blood splattering all over the walls. The other heads' eyes went blank, and the body collapsed to the floor.
Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.
Everyone at the shop was left speechless as Saneko stood over the body. The silence didn't last for long though, as everyone started cheering and clapping. This caught Saneko by surprise and she looked to see that everyone was indeed cheering for her.
A large grin appeared on Saneko's face, and she struck a flamboyant pose, reaching one of her arms out, while her other arm was down with her hand in her pocket. She began to speak in an overly serious tone.
"No need to praise me, for it is simply my duty as the hero Demon Babe."
Saneko was about to leave, but one of the employees called out to her before she left.
"Wait! For your trouble, here are two more banana smoothies, on the house!"
"Ah, foolish mortals, always needing to repay their heroes... but yeah I will be taking those."
With that, she grabbed the smoothies and left the building, trying to act mysterious. The crowd was left in bewilderment, but they were still clapping anyway.
"Demon Babe? What a dumb name."
"Yeah, but that girl had some form of black magic or something."
"Yeah that is true, I've never seen anything like that before."
As Saneko walked down the street back to her home, despite her cool façade saying that she was an aloof and mysterious anti-hero, her thoughts told an entirely different story.
"OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD! I'M SO COOL!"
When she returned home, she placed one of the smoothies in the refrigerator as she drunk the other. She sat on the couch and turned on the TV as she sipped on the smoothie. She was still thinking about the praise and adulation she had just received, even when she was wearing such lazy clothes.
As she flicked through the channels, a specific show caught her attention.
"Oh cool, 'I Got Reincarnated as a Sock and Used Cheat Skills to Be Lvl 100' is on."
She put the remote down and relaxed as she started watching her favorite genre of entertainment, although, it was short lived as her mom came in and shut the TV off suddenly.
"MOM! WHY?"
"We need to talk about something super duper important!"
"Oh god, what is it?"
"You need to go to school."
That was the last thing Saneko was expecting to hear. She had not attended any form of school throughout her entire life as she was always smarter than everyone else.
"Mom, you know damn well there's nothing they can teach me that I don't already know."
It was true. Saneko was solving complex trigonometry at just seven months old.
"I know that, but you need to learn how to cultivate powers. This world has changed a lot in a short period of time. If you don't have powers, you might not be able to get a job in the future."
"What? I have powers!"
"Yeah, but they don't stem from cultivation. You were just born with these completely unrelated powers."
Saneko facepalmed. Her mom's logic made no sense. People only cared about the concept of powers. It was highly unlikely that they actually cared about where they came from.
"Mom. Once again, they can't teach me anything I don't already know. I can probably do anything cultivators can do, and a million times better."
"But it's not cultivation."
"You're lost in semantics."
With that, her mom gasped dramatically and turned away from her, crying crocodile tears.
"Are you disrespecting your mother? I thought I raised a nice girl."
"I..."
Saneko was about to argue back, but she instead rolled her eyes and pouted to herself. She couldn't believe she was actually letting these fake tears get to her. She continued sipping her banana smoothie until the sound of the straw sucking up air was heard.
"Fine. I'll do it."
Mrs. Sarakana immediately turned back around with a huge smile, her "tears" completely gone now.
"Great! So I have already enrolled you in Anetop Academy. A great college I'm sure you'll love."
Saneko gritted her teeth in frustration as she glared at her mom. Saneko firmly believed there was absolutely no point for her to attend an academy just to learn something she already knew how to do. Since her powers didn't stem from cultivation, they were inaccessible to anyone else making her stand above cultivation entirely, but if she went against her mom, she wouldn't hear the end of it.
Mrs. Sarakana then ran to her room, and when she came back, she was holding grey pants, and a grey suit that had a badge on it.
"And look, this is the school uniform you will be wearing."
"You already have the uniform? How long have you planned this without telling me?"
"Oh, just a few months now."
Saneko was playing dumb a bit. She actually had a feeling her mom was planning something along the lines of this for a while. Since birth, Saneko could see people's true intentions above their heads written as words. It was always correct. Even if the person in question didn't even realize their own intentions yet, Saneko would know before they did. Since her eyes were purple, she simply referred to this as "Purple Vision".
Even so, like a lot of things, she tried to tune it out. Even when she did notice these intentions, she tried to reason with herself that they were false or exaggerated, but now it became clear that Saneko's vision was never wrong.
Mrs. Sarakana handed the uniform over to Saneko excitedly.
"Here! Put it on!"
With a groan, Saneko took the uniform and walked off to her bedroom with it. She closed the door, and began to change into it. She was extremely frustrated, but as the uniform came together, she realized that it wasn't actually that bad. First the white dress shirt, then the striking grey suit and pants. The badge gave it even more character. As she put on the red tie to complete the outfit, she looked at herself in the mirror and realized that this outfit was not only very stylish, but something a protagonist would wear.
She put her hands in her suit pockets and admired herself for a moment. She then began thinking to herself once more.
"I have this ON! But, I still think it needs more character."
She looked at herself in the mirror to see what the outfit was missing. She narrowed her eyes as she thought to herself, and then an idea came to her. She ran to her bedroom desk and got a permanent white marker from it. She randomly drew a design on the tie. It was two white zigzagged lines with a circle in the middle. The design had absolutely no meaning, but she thought it looked super cool.
When she left the bedroom, her mom was still there waiting for her.
"Oh! You look so cute in that!"
Mrs. Sarakana was clapping to herself, but stopped when she saw the design on the tie.
"Wait, did you ruin that poor tie?"
"Nuh uh! It looks infinitely better now!"
"No no. Let me wash that off."
"NEVER!"
Saneko teleported away to a peak of the Himalayas to escape from her mom for the time being. As she she stood there, she let out a sigh of relief and looked down. She was above the clouds and felt like she was on top of the world.
The cold wind blew through her hair. She smirked, showing off her teeth. As she stared down, she decided to put her hands in her suit pockets once again and shout at the top of her lungs.
"THE WORLD IS MINE! HAHAHAHAHA!"
She attempted to be as egotistical as possible as she thought it seemed cooler if she did. She was her biggest fan at this moment.
