Ever since Saneko healed Chloe, all of the earthquakes had stopped and the world returned to normal. That being said, the construction only grew, trying to rebuild what had been destroyed.
Chloe stepped into the HRS class of Anetop Academy right before the bell rang. All of the students looked in surprise. It had been so long since they last saw her. Mrs. Gaud smiled with a relieved expression. She was also getting pretty worried about Chloe's wellbeing, but luckily, it looked like she was fine. She began to walk to her seat, looking down at the ground, right before getting shoved out of the way by Saneko.
"Move aside mortal."
The class all gave Saneko menacing glares for her attitude. Chloe shook it off and continued walking to her seat. She had no memory of any of the events that had happened, only remembering that she had not attended school for some reason. Once she sat down, Mrs. Gaud walked up to her and patted her on the back.
"You alright? You were gone for quite a while."
Chloe nodded but didn't actually know if she was fine or not.
"I think so. I really don't know what happened."
"You don't know what happened? Were you in a coma or something?"
"I don't think so... maybe."
Mrs. Gaud didn't get why she was acting this way, but it didn't really matter. All that mattered was that she was okay. She turned her attention to the rest of the class and spoke up.
"Since Chloe has returned, I think it's best for us to do a simple class today, so she can catch up. The earthquakes have seemed to stop for the time being, so I think we should talk about that. I would like all of you to get into groups of four. Go and help your group write an essay on why you think these earthquakes happened. That's pretty much it."
The students started getting out of their seats, but Saneko simply stared out of the window like she always did, reveling in the fact that she looked like a power fantasy protagonist when she did so.
"You too Saneko. Don't think I forgot about you."
She groaned and stood up begrudgingly.
"I do not need to work with weaklings."
"You do if you want to pass, now hurry up."
She huffed to herself and randomly looked for any seat next to a group of people.
Mark walked up to Chloe and sat down next to her.
"Hey. Where were you? We were worried."
"Like I said, I really don't know. That's not a lie."
"... You were being serious about that?"
"Yeah. I just remember being in my room, and then I woke up on the road."
Saneko, like usual, never actually helped Chloe after healing her. She just walked away. In her defense, she had her mind on other things, like wondering when the ice cram shop would get new employees.
Saneko walked up to the Chloe and Mark, and pulled out a chair, sitting on it while crossing one leg over the other.
"You two are lucky, for I, Demon Babe, have chosen to work with you. But do not expect me to work, that is what you two are for. I am a queen after all. You should just be glad to be in my presence."
Mark and Chloe stared at her. Mark had a very unamused expression, but Chloe had more of a confused expression. It seemed like she had lost most of her memories, but she remembered Saneko somehow, and there was something about Saneko that made her feel uneasy.
"Who are you? I don't think we have talked."
"Pssh. Yes we have. How could you not recognize perfection when you see it? You fainted upon seeing me once."
Chloe was taken aback by that statement. It wasn't like her to faint for any reason at all, and she really didn't remember it either. Chloe began to get a little scared, wondering if Saneko was telling the truth or not. Seeing her expression made Saneko's mind race with positive thoughts about herself, as it always did.
"EEEEH! I LOVE SEEING PEOPLE LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT!"
Mark, also noticing Chloe's expression, tapped her on the shoulder.
"What's wrong now? It's just Saneko. I know you've been gone for a while, but she always acts like this, don't you remember?"
"I... I really don't."
"Wow. You really were out of it weren't you. Did you hit your head or something."
Suddenly, an unfamiliar voice spoke up behind the three. Chloe and Mark turned, however, Saneko simply put her feet on the table like she usually did, trying to give off a "good impression" to whoever this was.
It was a girl with long black braided pigtails who was wearing glasses. She looked very shy, and her voice was soft.
"Hi... Can I join you?"
Mark thought about it for a second, but ended up shrugging.
The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
"Well, I mean this wasn't even meant to be a group. I just wanted to talk to Chloe, but I guess since we already have Saneko here, you can join too. I forgot your name though."
"Oh... uh... my name is Katie."
"Well, sit down Katie."
She nervously took a seat and started fidgeting with her fingers. She always sat alone and rarely talked to anyone in the class, so she didn't really know what to say. Mark was feeling a bit disappointed though. He looked over to see the rest of the student council teamed up with Liam. He shouldn't have used this opportunity to speak to Chloe because now he was apart from the people he knew the best, but he put those thoughts aside and focused on the group.
"Alright, well, let's hurry up and get this over with."
Chloe and Katie nodded. Saneko just smirked and waved her hand around, disregarding his statement.
"I almost feel bad for all of you. I could finish this project within a fraction of a second if I wanted to, but I am forcing all of you to do it instead."
"Shut up Saneko."
"You can't seem to handle the truth."
Saneko went so far with this Demon Babe persona that she genuinely couldn't act like normal around her class. At this point, it would be seen as a massive weakness. She instead, kept being as obnoxious as possible, thinking that people were intimidated by this personality. Katie looked over at Chloe. She recognized her because Chloe was pretty popular. She then looked over at Saneko, and recognized her as well, because she was also popular, but not in a good way. She then looked back at Mark, who was popular as well because of being the student council president. She started getting even more nervous upon realizing that she was surrounded by "popular students".
Chloe noticed her unease. It was hardwired into her brain to be as helpful as possible, so even though she had forgotten a lot of stuff, this part of her remained.
"Is something bothering you Katie?"
"Well... it's.... it's just that I've never spoke to such... popular students before."
Hearing the word "popular" being used to refer to Saneko, made her brain almost explode from the joy she was feeling. She was screaming in her mind.
"AAAAAAH! I'M POPULAR! I KNEW IT!"
If only she actually knew how people really felt about her. As she looked around her group, she noticed how these characters were the perfect side cast for her life.
"Ah, the perfect girl trope who I have already proven myself stronger than. The student council president who I have also proven myself stronger than. And now a shy girl who can barely speak! This is too perfect! It's really like this world is a story that I'm the main character of!"
Saneko, like always, didn't know how much truth her words held sometimes.
Chloe continued to try and comfort Katie by reassuring her that everything would be okay.
"Don't worry. We aren't going to hurt you or anything. We are just doing a project, that's all it is."
Mark was writing all by himself, trying to get this done, not really caring if anyone helped him or not. He was used to taking care of the class anyway, so why was this any different? Katie looked over at him, and then looked over at Saneko who was still sitting in the most aggravating way possible.
"D...Do you think I can hang out with you guys more often."
"Of course!"
"It doesn't bother me."
"Psssh."
Even though their voices all spoke up at once, it was quite obvious who said what. Katie was quite thrilled to see that even the most negative reaction to her request wasn't a rejection. She smiled brightly when realizing this.
"Thank you! Maybe we can go to the park someday or something, all four of us!"
"That sounds great!"
Chloe was back in a good mood. The same couldn't be said for Saneko though. She looked away, only caring about banana smoothies and not this random girl.
"You weak mortals rely on talking too much."
"Hey that's mean Saneko. She was just trying to make friends."
"Only people who have no power say things like that."
"That's wrong! Tell her Mark."
Mark was still writing on the paper, not paying attention anymore.
"Yeah yeah, sure."
Chloe huffed and turned back to Katie.
"I'm sorry for their reactions. They are just mean people."
This caught Mark's attention, he put his pencil down and looked up at Chloe.
"Mean? I'm the one doing the work. And plus, I checked up on you when no one else besides the teacher did. If anyone here is mean, it's Saneko."
"I am not mean. I am superior."
"Oh shut your teeth. And comb your hair, that cowlick is so annoying."
"It is what I would call, good character design. Your feeble mind simply can't understand such a concept."
"Oh, says Ms. 'Demon Babe'."
"You mock because it's your only way of coping."
As the two of them went back and forth, Chloe sighed and shook her head. Katie wasn't mad or upset about the situation or anything though. In fact, she was just glad she had people to talk to. She found the banter between the three very entertaining.
After Mark had gotten tired of arguing, he grumbled to himself and picked his pencil back up, continuing to write the essay. Saneko put her arms behind her head, acting as if she had one the argument, but despite her cool front, her thoughts told another story as she was very distraught about what had just happened. Not about the argument, she couldn't care less about that. It was about something much more important.
"Crap! I was just turned into background sound! If this were an anime, my voice would have faded into the background while that guy was arguing with me, and the camera would have zoomed in on those two girls! I NEED ALL OF THE SCREENTIME!"
Realizing that she had to do something drastic if she wanted the attention of the nonexistent cameras, she stood up on the table. The three of them looked up, as did everyone else in the class. Mark facepalmed, not believing this was happening again.
"Oh my god. Can't you be normal for two seconds."
"SILENCE!"
There was then a silence, just as Saneko had wanted. She didn't really know what to say though, she just needed attention. Attention was like water for her. After a few seconds of silence, the class went back to writing.
"NO NO NO! THEY ARE WRITING AGAIN! I'M LOSING MAIN CHARACTER STATUS!"
"Saneko, please sit down."
She looked down to see that Chloe said that. Of course, it was the perfect girl she hated so much. It's not like she would listen to anything she had to say. Saneko opened her mouth to yell again, but Mark got up, holding the paper.
"I finished. You can all go back to your seats now because we don't need to be in this group anymore."
Saneko snarled at the fact that she wasn't being taken seriously. It's not like she ever was anyway, but she rarely noticed that. Katie looked down, feeling a bit disappointed that the group didn't really talk the entire time.
"Aww. I thought we could spend more time together."
"It's alright Katie. I promise we can talk again tomorrow. I'll even try to convince Mark and Saneko to come as well."
Saneko jumped down from the table once she heard that. She put her hands in her pockets and walked back to her seat. Katie and Chloe watched as she walked away and Katie looked down sadly again.
"No no no! Don't worry! I'm sure she'll lighten up eventually."
"I doubt it. I think she likes being alone anyway. We probably shouldn't bother her."
Chloe was surprised by how mature Katie was. On the outside, it seemed like she was just a fragile girl who would do anything to have some friends around her, but she was more nuanced than she gave her credit for.
Once Saneko sat back at her seat, she thought to herself about how she could use her powers again to show off, but there wasn't really anything that would give her the option too right now which frustrated her.
"COME ON! I JUST WANT ANOTHER COMPETITION OR SOMETHING! WHY ARE WE DOING ESSAYS?"
Surprisingly, Saneko didn't find enjoyment in just using her powers when there was absolutely no reason to. She thought that it was unnecessary, and it was the one restriction she gave herself when it came to using her powers. Her restriction was hardly applicable though, as she would make any excuse for their to be a "reason" to use her powers.
