90 - Boss

The lights of the pickup illuminated a large group of skeletons ahead of them and when he swiveled the spotlight around, there were skeletons coming out of the passages behind them. “Well, this doesn’t look good.” Chuck muttered. The tunnel was wide enough for him to turn around, but it would take time and would allow the skeletons to swarm them. It looked like the tunnel opened up ahead of them which would hopefully allow him to turn around easier.

With the decision made, he told Tess to hang on as pressed his foot on the gas. The pickup accelerated forward and soon they hit the first of the skeletons. The impact shattered some of the skeletons and threw some off to the side or under the wheels. One managed to grab onto the grill guard and started pulling itself up onto the hood.

Chuck slapped his hand onto the windshield barrier control, turning it off while Tess grabbed the shotgun. She pointed it at the skeleton and pulled the trigger, reducing it to scattered bones. Unlike the rifle which shot out a single beam of healing light, the shotgun fired off a cone of white light. He was glad the new ammo made the gun a lot less noisy or he would have been deaf from the gun going off in the cab. The pickup soon entered the larger cavern and something very large started moving at the other end.

The spotlight shown on a giant mass of bones that was starting to stand up. At first he couldn’t tell what it was but then once it was upright, the shape resolved itself in his mind. A new panic erupted in him as a two headed dragon made of bones started walking toward them. Chuck quickly spun the steering wheel, getting the pickup pointed back the way they had come, knocking more skeletons down.

The dragon looked too big to fit into the tunnel so he hoped once they got back inside they would be safe. A huge bony claw reached for the pickup but Chuck accelerated toward the relative safety of the tunnel, making it miss. More skeletons stood in their way but were run down as the pickup sped into the tunnel. Not looking back, he raced to the exit while hitting more skeletons.

Soon, they found themselves back outside and he had to slow down to go up the stairs, parking the pickup back on top of the platform. Trying to get his panic under control, Chuck looked behind them at the cave entrance. Luckily R2 was still in the back end and so far nothing was following them out of the cave. “Well, that was a bad idea and it leaves us with only one option.” Chuck said, looking at the road in front of them.

He waited a while longer before getting out to inspect the pickup in case anything decided to leave the cave. When everything stayed quiet he slowly got out and walked around the pickup looking for damage. Chuck pried a few bones loose that were stuck in the grill guard but otherwise they were good to go. After getting inside he gave a thumbs up to Tess and started slowly driving down the stairs.

Chuck went past the empty area and bumped into the rusty gate which collapsed. He didn’t want to risk getting out to open it. The wandering skeletons began to take notice of them as they drove over the gate. Chuck kept an eye on them as he started accelerating down the graveyard road. He smiled reassuringly at Tess while hoping they wouldn’t pose any problems. They had a long drive ahead of them to get out of the graveyard.
