71 - Quest

With trepidation, Chuck followed the official to the throne room. King Kyzoz was waiting for them with some other officials. Chuck and Tess kneeled before the throne and Kyzoz got down to business.

“Otherworlder, I will have to dispense with pleasantries as an urgent matter has come up. An outbreak has occurred in the city of Axete to the east of the capital along the coast. Axete has run out of both the medicine to treat the outbreak and the ingredients to make more medicine. I have heard your magical carriage is the fastest in the kingdom. I want you to deliver all the medicine and ingredients your carriage can handle. I also want to send a healer with you.”

An outbreak wasn’t the news Chuck was expecting. He figured they would want him to kill some creature or defeat some dungeon for them. The delivery job sounded easy enough but he needed more information. He wasn’t about to risk Tess and himself getting infected by some strange disease.

”I have some questions if you don’t mind. What kind of outbreak is it exactly? Is there a chance Tess and I could become infected?” Chuck asked. The king gestured to one of the officials who stepped forward to answer his questions. “It is a relatively common disease that only targets avians. This particular outbreak has infected more people than usual and the symptoms are more severe which will lead to death if not treated. There is no indication that any other race can become infected by the disease.”

Chuck wasn’t convinced that the disease wouldn’t spread to other races since it seemed like it was unusual but one look at Tess and he knew she wanted to help. He also knew if he refused then he wouldn’t be able to sleep easy at night so he was inclined to accept the job. “Since you want me to bring a healer, does that mean healing magic works to cure the disease?” Chuck asked, scratching his head.

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

“It does but it takes a powerful spell which only high level healers can use. Unfortunately Axete does not have many high level healers. Also healers aren’t able to cast such a powerful spell very often in a day so treating a lot of patients is impossible.” The same official answered.

”Ok, we’ll do it. I can get my pickup immediately, just let me know where to go to load the supplies. Have the healer meet us there and we’ll leave as soon as possible.” Chuck said while preparing to leave. The official directed him to go to a warehouse that was owned by the merchants guild. He and Tess left quickly and were soon inside the magical carriage and headed to their inn.

Chuck grabbed his travel pack but left the box of items that belonged to Tess and most of their other luggage and things they had bought on their trip. The inn and R2 would keep them safe while they were gone. Chuck wanted as much room as possible in the pickup for the supplies they would be delivering so R2 would have to stay behind.

They then hurried to the warehouse where a team was waiting to load the pickup. The supplies were all packed inside wooden crates and Chuck was told that there was plenty of cushioning so they should survive rough roads without a problem. They piled the boxes above the cab but they didn’t seem very heavy so the pickup should be able to handle the load.

The healer arrived just as the last few crates were being loaded. Luckily the healer was a diminutive goblin named Obb so he should have no trouble fitting in the cab. Tess turned into her dwarf form and everyone piled in. Chuck wasn’t exactly sure which road to take but Tess knew the way so she would be the navigator.
