80 - Thief

The next day Chuck had R2 stay still while he washed the blood off. Chuck wasn’t too concerned about how many limbs R2 had taken since he had heard that a powerful enough healing spell could regrow them. That is if they got out of jail and their kingdom decided to go through the trouble of healing them but that wasn’t his problem.

In his mind, they were just lucky to still live after daring to mess with him. Chuck was kind of hoping that if he sent a strong enough message that they would leave him alone. After he finished cleaning R2, he carefully inspected R2’s weapons for damage but they still seemed to be alright. With everything done, R2 continued patrolling.

Tess was working with Maz in the garden they had made behind the house while Raz was giving the pickup a wash. Chuck went over to the garden to see how the girls were getting along. Tess was a white haired bunny girl today which Chuck thought was appropriate for working in the garden.

Her cute bunny ears twitched as he approached and she stood up and brushed the dirt off her legs. Chuck gave her hug and she kissed his cheek. “How’s the garden coming along?” He asked, surveying the garden plot. “Good, but I think we need to make it bigger.” She replied, smiling at him.

“Sure, I’ll have R2 clear some more of the ground.” He replied, smiling back. Chuck left the garden entirely up to Tess. He never had much of a green thumb and besides he still wasn’t very familiar with this worlds plants. Tess seemed to enjoy it and Maz enjoyed helping her.

They spent the rest of the day working outside. The weather was nice and Chuck enjoyed himself working around his property. He was tired after working all day so went to bed relatively early. Tess did make him do some studying before bed but rewarded him for his efforts afterwards.

Chuck was woken up in the middle of the night by the sound of his pickup starting up. “What the hell?” He swore, rolling out of bed. He didn’t bother getting dressed and just grabbed his gun off the night stand and ran out the front door. Whoever was in his truck seemed to be having trouble getting it into gear.

He had locked the garage door but had left the keys in the ignition thinking no one would be able to steal it since no one would know how to operate it. Chuck briefly wondered where R2 was before seeing him coming from behind the house. The car thief finally managed to find reverse and was backing out of the garage.

Chuck yelled at them to stop but of course they didn't listen. His yelling startled the car thief however, and instead of slowly backing out the pickup suddenly sped up. He winced as it careened across the street and smashed into a building on the other side of the road.

“So much for my tail lights.” Chuck muttered as he raced to the truck and threw the door open. The goblin driver looked dazed as Chuck grabbed him and tossed him out of the cab. R2 restrained him as Chuck turned the pickup off. Tess and the siblings had come out of the house to see what was going on so Chuck yelled that everything was fine.

He went over to the thief and realized the goblin looked familiar. Chuck couldn’t remember his name, but if he wasn’t mistaken it was one of the alchemy guild members. That would explain how the thief had gotten as far as he did. Unfortunately for him, actually driving the pickup was a lot different than just knowing what things did. Tess was the only one he had given any driving lessons to.

Chuck also had to wonder how the car thief thought he would get away with it. The city gates were closed at this hour so the intention must have been to hide it for the time being unless some guards were in on the plan. In any case, the thief would be turned over to Nass for questioning. Chuck was sure the guard captain would get to the bottom of things. It couldn’t be a coincidence that the attempted robbery happened so soon after the attempted kidnapping.
