They arrived back to Axtol safely and Chuck went straight to his house. He was greeted by a finished garage. The pickup would finally have a roof over it again. He parked the truck and they unloaded the camping gear and souvenirs from the capital. The only things Chuck had bought were from the auction but Tess and the siblings had done some shopping.
He left the robot in the pickup for now, intending to take it to the alchemy guild later. Hopefully they would let him tinker with it in one of the spare workrooms. It would probably be a little safer there instead of in his garage. He had notified the city guards of the ambush when they arrived but he needed to inform Alz as well. Chuck didn’t know the politics of Axtol or the capital so didn’t really know how safe he would be.
After they got settled, he and Tess headed to the guild. Chuck found Nox and Alz in the warehouse where they welcomed him back. He explained the situation and showed them the robot. Alz was intrigued and immediately had some workers help move it to a workroom. Alz wasn’t sure who the mastermind behind the attack was but had a few ideas. Bright was summoned and was quickly engrossed in inspecting the robot.
It took some doing but Chuck managed to pry him away from the robot long enough to show him the parchments from the auction. Bright wasn’t familiar with the writing either but promised to work on translating it if Chuck allowed him to help repair the robot. Chuck was going to ask for his help anyway so immediately agreed. He had a few tools in the pickup that might come in handy so brought those into the workroom.

They got busy removing panels from the robot and figuring out how it worked. The technology wasn’t that dissimilar to Earth but he wasn’t sure what powered it yet. Luckily Chuck was able to remove the panels with his tools without doing any more damage to it. In the middle of the torso was a large cracked crystal, which Bright said was the power source. Bright thought they could use a similarly sized magic crystal to replace it.
Alz and Tess had been watching them work and the guild master offered to procure one. Chuck was grateful but it seemed like it might take some time. Next Chuck had a look at the broken limbs. Since the limbs had been included, he hoped it wouldn’t take too much work to reattach them. He could certainly hook the wires back up without a problem. After figuring out how the wiring went, he decided to call it a day. He decided he should attach the limbs before actually fixing the wiring.
On the way home, he tried to think of a way to reattach the limbs. Chuck didn’t have a welder but maybe there was some spell or magical device that did something similar. He would have to ask a blacksmith. Bright was going to continue looking over the robot and try and determine how it was controlled. It wouldn’t do any good fixing the robot if it went berserk after they turned it on.
Chuck knew of a blacksmith that wasn’t too far out of the way going home so stopped. Instead of a friendly dwarf, which they didn’t seem to have in this world, it was a muscular orc. They discussed welding but Chuck didn’t find quite what he needed. The blacksmith seemed to think he could do it but Chuck wasn’t sure he wanted to bring the robot there yet. He would keep thinking about it. So far it looked like it was possible to fix the robot, so maybe he hadn’t wasted his money on a decoration after all. If the mastermind found out he had a working robot, he might try harder to steal it however.
