65 - The Calm Before the Swarm

A few days later R2 was dropped off at their home with a note from Captain Lux. He had Tess read it for him. While they were inside for a week, he really needed to buckle down and work on his reading and writing. The note said the culprit was a high ranking noble who would be locked up for a good long time. Lux said to keep an eye out to make sure other members of his noble house didn’t try anything. They would have their hands full with the fallout from the crimes so Chuck should be safe for now.

R2 appeared to be undamaged although the metal bars looked to have taken a beating. His new orders for R2 were to guard the house and when they went out, to guard he and Tess if Chuck thought it necessary. Chuck didn’t know if the metal bars would be the best weapons to take on flying targets so he would have to give it some thought. R2 obediently started patrolling around the property.

The migration started two days later. Chuck and Tess were walking back from the alchemy guild when a siren like sound went off. At first he didn’t know what was going on, then everyone looked to the sky and he remembered the migration. Chuck looked up but didn’t see anything until Tess pointed to a group of large dragonfly like bugs in the distance. There was no panic, people just started heading to their homes and the streets quickly emptied.

Chuck and Tess were already heading home but quickened their pace. He had left R2 back with Raz and Maz at the house. As they neared their home, Chuck could see more and more flying insects in the sky. There were no butterflies or moths but from talking to hunters it didn’t seem like they had ever heard of them so they might not exist in this world.

He watched the bugs flying over. Most seemed to ignore the city but a few flew lower. Some even appeared to land. There did seem to be different types but he couldn’t tell what they were from this distance. Chuck decided he had seen enough for now. R2 was just rounding the garage so he instructed it to keep the bugs away from the house. He had decided to replace the damaged metal bars with longer metal spears in all three clawed hands.

Chuck and Tess went inside and joined Raz and Maz who were already in the house preparing a meal. He had heard the bugs flying over would increase in number as the migration went on culminating in a giant swarm. Chuck wanted to be sure he was safely indoors when that happened. The first few days went by without any excitement which started to be a problem. He was bored and he hated studying.

Tess tried to make it more interesting for him by quizzing him and if he got it right, she would take off a piece of clothing. It didn’t take long before they were wrestling in bed instead of studying however. Staying in bed all day with Tess wasn’t a bad thing either but he was a little embarrassed to think that Raz and Maz had to put up with it with nowhere to go. Chuck had managed to find a few simple games which were similar to checkers and chess. They played them on and off but he quickly got tired of them. He then tried teaching a few games he could barely remember how to play but it didn’t go well. Chuck had never been into board games in the first place so they mostly ended up lazing around and listening to music.
