7 - Alchemy Guild

Chuck followed the goblin outside and down a cobble stone street. On his way he asked something that was on his mind. “Captain Nass didn’t seem too shocked that I was from another world. Are there others?” Nox slowed his pace and replied “There are lots of stories about otherworlders but none have appeared lately and none have been human.” Chuck walked in silence for a time thinking he would like to meet another otherworlder. Then he asked if there were any other guilds. “There are only two sanctioned guilds - the alchemy guild and the merchants guild.” Nox replied looking back at him. It was still surreal that he was talking to a goblin, but he’d have to get used to it. The merchants guild seemed pretty self explanatory but he wasn’t sure about the alchemy guild. “What exactly does the alchemy guild do?” He asked. The goblin frowned. “To put it succinctly, the alchemy guild deals with all things magical, be they artifacts, potions, or materials.” Nox said waving his arms nonchalantly. “There was no magic in my world, just parlor tricks, so I’m not sure if you’ll find my items interesting or not.” Chuck said worriedly. “We also seek out the strange and unusual. New materials could be very useful. Here we are.” Nox said as they arrived in front of a multistory brick building that was much more decorated than the guard compound. There was a sign out front but evidently the translation artifact didn’t translate writing because he couldn’t read it.

”The guild master is busy at the moment so allow me to inspect your items while we wait.” Nox said leading him to a room that looked like a workshop. Chuck looked around but didn’t see any other guild members. He dumped out his backpack on an empty table that Nox indicated. They hadn’t returned the pheasant so they must have kept it for the entrance fee. He didn’t mind since it was starting to stink anyway. Nox briefly studied the hunting knife and plastic water bottle. “What do you call this material, it is rather fascinating.” Nox asked squishing the bottle in his hand. “It’s called plastic but I’m not sure how it’s made. I do have a few others if you are interested.” Chuck replied. “Oh you have more than what is in your pack?” Nox asked curiously. “Oh crap, I probably shouldn’t have said that.” Chuck thought to himself but the cat was already out of the bag. “Um, yeah but they’re hidden.” He said nervously. “I see, the guild would certainly be interested in anything you have but you can discuss it with the guild master. What is this?” Nox asked grabbing his old lighter.

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

“You might like this, it is called a lighter and is used to light a fire.” Chuck explained while demonstrating the lighter. “I see. That is interesting but most people are able to use basic magic, so I don’t know how useful it will be.” Nox said while he chanted Ignite. A flame came out of the end of one of his fingers which was larger than the flame from the lighter. “Wow, can I learn magic too?” Chuck exclaimed. “You are from another world so I’m not sure.” Nox replied putting out the flame. He took off his glasses and wiped them on his tunic. The only other things in the bag were a couple granola bars, a small first aid kit, an emergency flashlight that you had to shake to use, and a multi-tool that functioned as a pair of pliers, a screwdriver, and other small tools. Nox said there was a light spell so the flashlight was a no go, but he thought the materials were interesting and he thought the multi-tool was a clever design.

Chuck was then ushered into a waiting room that was lavishly decorated. Not long after, a raccoon beast person came to give him a drink of something that smelled like tea. He wasn’t a big tea drinker but didn’t want to be rude. The beast person eyed him curiously but left without saying anything. Even the raccoon beast person was at least 6 feet tall and savage looking. Chuck assumed it was some kind of servant or maid but he was having trouble figuring out genders with the beast faces and tunics. He was about done with his tea when Nox came back and told him the guild master was ready to see him.
