Raz was thankful. He didn’t know what they were going to do before the otherworlder found them. Their begging and scavenging for food hadn’t been working very well. Before their mother had died, he had promised to take care of his little sister. Unfortunately he hadn’t been doing a very good job. Their father had been part of the territorial army and had been killed in battle years earlier. They had been told bedtime stories about otherworlders but Chuck didn’t seem all that impressive to Raz. He was short in stature and didn’t act like the previous master. He didn’t even like it when they called him master and wanted them to call him Chuck. The new master also had to be shown how to use the various magical devices in the house and didn’t know how to read or write. Raz could do both and was teaching Maz so offered to teach the master as well.
The master had taken them along to buy things for the house and even bought new clothes for them to wear. They were tasked with helping out around the house and cleaning up the yard. Although he was their master, he helped out too. Maz was good with plants so helped the master figure out what to plant in the garden. Raz and Maz shared a bedroom on the second floor and ate meals with the master. The master even made some meals for them. It wasn’t as good as their mother’s cooking however. Maz decided to handle most of the cooking. He told them they could each have a room, but they preferred to be together since that is what they were used to. The master used the first floor bedroom. He even wanted to pay them but neither Raz nor Maz knew what the amount should be. The master said he would ask some people he knew at the alchemy guild.

Speaking of the alchemy guild, they had gone twice now. The master even showed them his carriage he called a pickup. It was pretty beat up but still impressive. Raz had never seen anything like it. The master told them he had used the pickup to help save the governor’s relative. They had requested to hear the story of fighting the bug monsters more than once and they were promised a ride in the pickup the next time he got it out. The master even knew the guild master so his standing with the beast siblings was increasing. Maz got bored when people from the guild kept asking questions about the mysterious pickup, but Raz was fascinated. Maz perked up when the master started playing some strange music for the guild members. The music came right out of the pickup, like it was a giant music box. Maz was excited to hear more but the master said he didn’t want to drain the battery too much, whatever that meant. He promised to let her listen to more later though.
They even got to help the master work on the pickup. The guild requested to study the broken headlight. Raz thought that’s what it was called anyway. To remove the broken piece, they had to take off a piece on the front called a grill guard. It was heavy, so Raz was asked to hold it. Raz was strong, so it wasn’t a problem. The job didn’t take too long and soon the headlight was removed and the grill guard put back into place. The master treated them to grilled meat on the way home, which was their favorite. They both missed their parents but living with the otherworlder wasn’t so bad.
