38 - Emergency Summons

Chuck raced to the city gate after hearing from the shop keeper. It didn’t sound like the attack had occurred yet so Raz and Maz should be ok, but he still wanted to check. At the gate he was stopped by the guards. “Otherworlder, it’s good you are back. We were given orders that if we saw you to send you to the governor’s mansion.” The lizard kin guard said, eyeing Tess who now looked like a pretty girl with raccoon ears and a fluffy tail. She was wearing a t-shirt and jeans to match Chuck for some reason. “Fine, but I’m stopping by my house first since it’s on the way.” Chuck replied impatiently. The guards waved him through and he drove to his house, avoiding the traffic heading for the gate. When he got there, Raz and Maz ran out to greet him after hearing the truck. “Master, you’re home. Did you hear about the monsters?” Raz said excitedly. “The guards said something about it, but I’ve been summoned by the governor so I’m sure Feli will fill me in. I’m glad you two are doing fine.” Chuck said giving the siblings and house a once over.

They both smiled at him, then looked at Tess questioningly. “This is Tessetty, she’s my girlfriend.” Chuck said happily. “I’m his mate, nice to meet you. You can call me Tess. Chuck has told me a lot about you, I’m sure we’ll get along.” Tess said going over and hugging both siblings. Chuck always got embarrassed when the word mate was used but it seemed to be the go to phrase in this world. “Both of you hop in the back. We’ll all go see what’s going on.” Chuck said, motioning to the truck. They all piled in and took off. Chuck didn’t think it could be the same cockroach monsters as before. The city guard should have been able to handle them and the city had a bigger wall than the outpost, not to mention a drawbridge.

They reached the governor’s mansion and were ushered inside. Guild master Alz and guard captain Nass were already there talking with Feli. “Otherworlder, it is good to see you.” Feli said, looking tired. “What’s going on? Is it the same creatures again?” Chuck asked. “No, we were able to send a force to eliminate them and clear out the area around the outpost not long after you left. They even sealed the hole in the cave to be on the safe side.” Feli replied. “The problem occurred when they weren’t able to dispose of the dead bodies fast enough.” Nass said sadly. “Monsters from the depths were attracted to the scent of death and the outpost was destroyed. The survivors retreated toward the city but they didn’t realize the monsters had followed them until the second day. A few brave souls stayed behind to hold the monsters off while the rest went to warn the city. The monsters seem to be in a frenzy and are traveling straight down the road which will lead them here.” Feli continued looking at a map on the desk.

”Won’t the walls hold them off?” Tess asked. Feli seemed to notice her for the first time and looked puzzled. “Ah, this is Tessetty. She is my, um, mate.” Chuck said scratching his head then introduced the three officials. “Oh, I see you were successful in the capital. It is a pleasure to meet you. I just wish it were under better circumstances.” Alz said with a slight grin. “Indeed. Now to your question, we will of course raise the drawbridge. According to the survivors however, the monsters are good climbers and can jump great distances. I don’t think the city guard will be able to hold them off for long. It would help if the survivors were able to fight but they are in poor shape after their retreat.” Feli said looking at Tess. “What we need are more fire mages. It seems the monsters are particularly susceptible to fire. Unfortunately none of the fire mages from the expedition survived.” Alz continued. Chuck was silent for a minute, rubbing his chin in thought and then had an evil grin. “You have an idea otherworlder?” Nass asked. “If you need fire then I think I can help.” Chuck said confidently.
