55 - Profits

The next day Chuck and Tess drove back to the alchemy guild with the books. That morning Raz and Tess finished looking at them and determined they were indeed all magical texts. Neither of them could say the value since the books were so old but there seemed to be spells they had never heard of before. Chuck figured newly discovered spells would certainly have a lot of value. He was hoping to get a good amount to put toward the auction. Chuck also flipped through the books but didn’t find any notes or treasure maps this time.

Tess chose to look like a normal human girl today with shoulder length black hair and a t-shirt and jeans to match him again. He thought she looked a little familiar but couldn’t remember where he’d seen her before. They met Nox who said Bright had stayed in the library the whole night and was busily going through books. Chuck and Tess went to say hi but Bright was too engrossed with the books. He said hello but that was about it.

Next they went to see Alz since Nox said he was available. “Otherworlder, I never expected you to bring back another otherworlder. Such an interesting one at that. Nox also tells me you have books for me to look at.” Alz said as they entered the office. “Yes, it was a surprise for us as well. I brought one of the books with me.” Chuck replied, handing over the book. Alz studied it for a minute and looked shocked. “You say you have more of these?” Alz asked excitedly. “Yes, two boxes full.” Chuck replied.

“The guild would certainly be interested in buying some but we don’t have the resources to purchase all of them. If you are going to the capital for the auction, I’m sure Kizx would buy some from you as well. The rest could be put in the auction.” Alz said, still studying the book. “Oh, we copied this as well while we were exploring the ruins.” Chuck said, handing him the parchment with the symbols Tess wrote down. “It was used to preserve the site.” Chuck continued. Alz put the book down and studied the parchment in silence.

If you encounter this story on Amazon, note that it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

“Interesting, yes we will buy this from you as well.” Alz said, smiling. “Then I’ll let you pick out which books you want. Can you help arrange to put some in the auction? I don’t know how it’s done and I’ll even give you a discount for your trouble.” asked Chuck. “Of course, I appreciate you letting us have first pick of them.” Alz said, grinning. Alz and Nox followed Chuck and Tess to the pickup and looked through the boxes. They decided to keep three of the books and Chuck would be bringing the rest to the capital.

After settling on a price, they left the guild and drove home a lot richer. He was surprised they were willing to pay so much for the items. Chuck was feeling pretty good about the auction and couldn’t wait to see how much the rest of the books would bring. They had to park off to the side once they were home since construction of his garage was ongoing. The old stable had been torn down but there was a lot left to do.

That evening they celebrated by eating out. Chuck talked about the auction and Raz and Maz begged him to take them along this time. Apparently they hadn’t been to the capital before. He finally relented and agreed to allow them to come. Tess promised to show them around once they got there. It wouldn’t be too long now before they had to leave so they needed to start getting ready for the trip.
