Chuck thought about slamming the pickup in reverse and trying to hit the spider, but he didn’t want Torj and Kyt to get hurt. He also thought about having Tess take the wheel while he tried to shoot back at the spider. Tess hadn’t learned how to drive yet though, and the shotgun was too awkward to try and shoot backwards through the window. Chuck figured the chances of him hitting anything were pretty low as well. They didn’t bring along any fire bombs since throwing them around in the city would be a bad idea. He had to think of something fast. Who knew what else had gotten over the wall. The streets were narrow so he couldn’t turn around easily. If he could put some distance between them, then they would have time to get out and fight back. Luckily, they hit a fairly open, straight stretch of street and Chuck yelled “Hold on!” As he floored the accelerator.
The spiders were fast but the truck was faster. They quickly pulled away from the creature. When he judged there was enough distance, he skidded the pickup to a halt, with the truck sideways in the street. His door was now facing the spider which was rapidly approaching. He jumped out with his gun and Torj and Kyt started firing more arrows. He fired the shotgun but it was hard to hit with it skittering around. He rolled on the ground as webbing shot where he had been standing. Just then music started blaring out of the truck, cranked up all the way, and Tess started honking the horn. The spider seemed startled and didn’t know what was going on. Chuck used the distraction to shoot it’s head and Torj and Kyt also put arrows into its head. It flopped over and started twitching. Chuck dusted himself off and stared at the dead creature. “Good thinking.” He said to Tess, getting back in the truck and giving her a kiss.

They sped back to the wall to find one of the huge tarantulas had gotten over and was locked in combat with a couple guards. An injured or dead guard was laying on the ground behind them, Chuck wasn’t sure which. The tarantula looked like it had taken some fire damage and was partially singed but that didn’t seem to slow it down. Chuck honked his horn as he aimed at the creature. It turned to face the new threat and the guards jumped out of the way. He rammed the truck into it head on, pinning the spider to the wall. Purplish blood spewed out of its mouth and splattered onto the hood and windshield. It wasn’t dead yet though. Torj and Kyt ran over the roof and skewered its head with their swords, dodging its large fangs. That did the trick and it slumped down on the hood. Chuck slowly backed up and let it fall to the ground. He breathed a sigh of relief as the guards came over to thank them.
It sounded like the worst of it was over so Chuck followed the guards back to the top of the wall. It seemed like what spiders remained had enough of the fire and were going back to the Howling Wood. There were two Scytheclaws now, that were enjoying themselves by going after the retreating spiders. They didn’t seem to be interested in the burnt bodies. Burnt corpses littered the bridge and the base of the wall. He watched as a few bodies floating in the river were swept downstream. The corpses gave off the smell of burnt hair which was nauseating. Chuck didn’t envy the ones that had to clean up the mess. The guards all cheered at their victory over the spiders and Chuck joined in. It had been a long day. He was just glad the city was safe but figured he would have nightmares about giant spiders for a while.
