Chapter 54 - The sad truth

Chapter 54 - The sad truth

The night passed and the special class, minus Mia, continued their work from the day before, just with less incidents. Like a worker going to a factory he worked all his life on any given day of the week to work.

The only real thing of note was that Klaws display of strength on the day before had made the monsters and animals on the beach steer away from the ruins of the city, for the most part.

The day passed, night came and everyone slept, this time on the job as the place they were allowed to use on their first day had to be used to house civilians rescued by Klaws.

At mid-day of the third day a pair of people from the special class who normally didn’t have much to do with each other, found themselves talking over lunch.

“I think I fucked up” Kaki said.

“What makes you think that?” Cassandra asked as she ate her salad.

“I am here to start.”

“Is my company really that bad?” She jokingly said.

“You know that it wasn’t what I meant.” He said, somewhat angrily.

“I don’t get many chances to poke at you knight boys, let me have my fun.”

“You won’t get many friends if you continue to act like you do.”

“I don’t need friends if I have money.”

“Whatever you say…”

“So, what did you do for me to find you almost drinking that flavored water the locals call beer?”

“I got someone killed…” he said, almost choking as he said it.

“Uh? Wasn’t the four of you killing bandits all this time?”

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

“That’s different, I let a civilian die.”

“People die all the time.”

“But she died because of me.”

“How?”

“She was tied to the back of a horse like luggage. I killed the horse and when it fell, it killed her.”

“Didn’t you see her tied up?”

“No. She was covered by a cloth sheet.”

“Then why are you eating yourself up? What was the alternative? Die?”

“… I could have done something, I know it.”

“Like what?”

“…”

“See.”

“They are going to take points away from me from that too. My family will also get pretty angry with me.” Kaki said, in a very downtrodden tone.

“I see what is going on. You are not sad, afraid or whatever because you got someone killed. You are afraid of the consequences.”

“I…” Kaki tried to say something but what Cassandra said hit the nail in the head.

“Don’t feel bad. Most people are like this.”

“But.”

“Someone just died to a monster right now, somewhere in the world. Are you sad?”

“Who?”

“Someone you don’t know.”

“...Not really.” He said after thinking for a moment.

“Mia is too smart for her own good sometimes.” Cassandra said, smiling a little.

“What does she have to do with this?”

“People only care about what they can perceive, or so she said, and that is actually true, for most people.”

“What do you mean?” Kaki, asked, really confused.

“Unless something affects you, you tend to ignore it. Not you, you. People in general. For example, we didn’t care about the people here until we first knew about them and got the knowledge that if we didn’t help them we would get bad grades.”

“Yeah…”

“You can feel bad that someone who shouldn’t have died, did, in front of you and there may be consequences to that. But don’t eat yourself up over it. Few people can see the future, fewer are good at it.”

“Thanks…”

“No problem, now if you could sign a contract and be my knight for a few years…”

“In your dreams.”

After the talk, Kaki and Cassandra went their separate ways. Kaki walked around and put himself together, helping in keeping the peace inside the city for the rest of the day.
