Chapter 47 – Klaws first day on the job

“Sir, I don't want to sound like an ass but this place is a shit hole.” Klaws said to the man in charge of the cleaning operations of the city. Or more specifically the ruins of half of the town that were destroyed by the tsunami.

“I wouldn't describe it like that but you are not wrong. You should have seen it the day after. I swear I saw a fish walking.” The man joked in a somewhat depressing tone.

After the incident in the fortress, everyone went their own ways to do their jobs. Klaws had to ask for directions a lot but he managed to find the person in charge of what he had to do.

Klaws had never seen the ocean before so he didn't really have a reference for what would happen if a lot of water washed over something, much less the salt water of a monster infested ocean. It was like the ocean tried to invade the land but didn't like it and tried to go back - but then only half of it managed to return. Half of the ruins in the affected area had partly eaten giant monster, plant and/or other sea creature corpses on them. Those were in turn being used as food by some monsters and other animals that could live on land. Due to all that, even the people who survived the tsunami were now stuck since what remained could and would kill them if given the chance.

“So, what do I need to do sir? I am very strong.” Klaws asked.

Soon after Klaws began to rummage the area nearest to the livable part of the city first to get a feeling on how he should proceed. He never really had any difficulty in controlling his strength nowadays but the wet and broken wooden houses proved to be a challenge. Too little force and he couldn't do anything, too much and things basically exploded.

A few courageous creatures crowled in his direction only to be tossed back into the ocean by Klaws or eaten by things that ambushed them. Holding a walking fish was not pleasant.

It took around 30 minutes for Klaws to get a hold on how he should proceed before he went deeper, to the areas where people might be - only to regret the decision immediately.

“FUCKING PLANTS!“ Klaws screamed as something he thought was just dead algae tried to wrap around his leg and pierce his skin. He quickly shredded it with his claws and continued on his way, tearing apart everything in his path just to be sure.

Once he reached an area a little deeper into the beach that might have people stuck there, he began his job.

First, a whole lot of shouting and not much response. Then tossing the wildlife and occasional monster back into the sea with rage and glee. And finally checking the ruined houses for signs of lifes, bodies or valuables, not necessarily money and jewelry, but food, clothes, containers and alike. Things necessary to help people live.

This process continued for around 6 houses until Klaws finally heard a response to his shouting from a particularly good looking house that was mostly intact. Even if it was covered by the usual flora and fauna found in the disaster area.

“HEY! IS THERE ANYONE THERE!?“ Klaws shouted.

“SHUT UP BOY! THERE IS NO NEED TO SHOUT! I AM NOT DEAF!“ An older male voice shouted back.

Moments later a tanned older human man walked from the front door of the house, kicked a fish a few meters away and started to stare at Klaws intensely.

“Sir, you need to leave, it's dangerous here.“

“Of course it's dangerous. I am here.“ The old man said with otherworldly confidence.

“Sir, I can see some big monsters not even a few kilometers from here. It's not safe to stay in this area.“

“Let them come! The ocean didn't take my house or my life, those things will not either!“

“Sir. With all due respect, Fuck this!“ Klaws said as he grabbed the man and began to run towards the safer area of the city. Luckily, there was already a group of people ready to take care of the old man when they arrived.

On the way back, so Klaws could get the man's stuff from his house, he found himself fighting a monster mollusk. Its shell was strong enough to withstand Klaws slashes so he had to pummel the thing to death, dirtying himself in the monster's viscera as he did. Klaws was going to become an avid fan of baths, he just knew it.

After cleaning himself as best as he could, he began to quickly move everything from inside the house to a designated area in the safe part of the city. The old man didn't have much in the way of salvageable furniture so Klaws only had to get a bed and a pair of chairs. Two trips later and all the old man's belongings that were not trash were back in the old man's possession to his happiness.

Sadly for Klaws, it was just his first job of many that day.
