1.9. The Berries 2

1.9. The Berries 2

When Fliegenda awoke next, it was to a knocking on the door.

At first, he was confused, the soft bed beneath him feeling like a dream come true, as he tried to get up.

Everything was a bad dream, everything would be alright he thought, but as he stood up he realized his missing left arm and sighed.

"So it was real... why am I in a bed again?"

"Green one, come and eat, so we can work together! "

A voice called from the outside as he looked around the block house like room he was in.

"I'm coming, Berry!"

He called as he put on the work clothes they provided him with.

The clothing style of the Berries was simple. It involved linen pants and leather wests, while the colour and pattern on his shirt told everyone who he was. His shirt was a simple green colour with red stripes, though no one had told him what the stripes meant so far.

As he left the room and clasped hands with Berry, they both descended the stairs to the kitchen to eat.

"How have you slept, Green one?"

Berry asked, presenting Fliegenda something that looked like scrambled eggs.

"I haven't slept this good in a long time, and what can you tell me about the harvest festival?"

He asked, and Berry smiled at that.

"There, we make sacrifices to the old gods, so that they continue protecting us from the dangers outside this place, and with you, we will have even more stuff to sacrifice, and maybe soon enough room for another house!"

The jolly guy was positively beaming as he explained all this, though Fliegenda pondered the meaning of those words for the whole breakfast. When both had eaten everything, they stood up and went outside, where they grabbed a sickle and went to work clearing the fields.

"Why do we only cut so little every day?"

Fliegenda asked, a bit confused at that specific requirement.

"You see," the person working next to him answered, one of the older Berries.

"The gods live in there, and while they protect us, they do so by killing everything that they see. You should never head too deep into the fields because they will eat you."

That revelation made a cold feeling crawl down his spine, the feeling much stronger as the person that said those words seemed absolutely unbothered by that knowledge, acting as if all gods would eat their own worshippers

As the evening drew closer, he once again set in a beautiful chair the Berrieshad assigned him and ate bread, beer, and stew together.

Thus, a repetitive life started for Fliegenda.

Three weeks he woke up every morning, went to eat breakfast that Berry prepared, and followed it up with a day of clearing out the fields. He noticed that it took him barely any time to clear out a large part and wondered why the Village had been so small.

But every day, his doubts about the place receded, and he just embraced the life of a Berrie.

Once, he had asked why there were no female Berries, to which he only got looks of confusion.

"The gods create the Berries."

They all said, and Fliegenda just accepted it.

It was on the day of the Harvest festival that everything changed. The Berries had given him a specific tracht to wear, on which red lines crossed on a black background in a weird pattern that hurt his head if he looked to close. Leather pants that where as black as the night, with golden buttons on them, and a ring of grains on his head.

That day he spent by learning the prayers he had to speak in Berrie, the language feeling like a mixture of German, Goblin and the stuff the elves spoke, which he at least knew some off.

"Heute Nach bete ich zu den Alten gestalten, die meine Seele verwalten. Erfüllt mich mit Freude, auf das ich nichts bereue, denn ich arbeite für euch."

He knew some of the words, but the general melody felt like a comedical version of a prayer. Like he was mocking someone.

It was only as he set in his chair and the prayers began, that he questioned what happened for the first time.

As Iron bindings closed around his arms, and the other Berries chanted different words to those he chanted, he knew that he was betrayed.

"So we meet, Champion of that bastard. My master does his best to stop his influence here, and you might have noticed it. So, lamb, it is time for the slaughter."

A creature like a humanoid scarecrow emerged, the steps silent upon the ground as it approached him, and the bad feeling emerged again.

"You... you must be a champion, huh?"

Fliegenda asked, realizing how stupid it was that he didn't realize the distance the system had taken to him.

"You are only a peasant right now, and his magic will not reach you where I reign, for your own best, just give up."

And Fliegenda was tempted. He felt the same calmness he remembered from the past days carry with this creatures voice, a promise of a free life as just another slave to the old gods, a Berrie through and through.

"Please... can you come close for me to submit?"

Fliegenda asked, and as the creepy reaper approached, Fliegenda used become Breeze and jet boots to dash right into his opponent, who had trouble holding himself on his legs, as Fliegenda reformed behind him as a statue, the pressure on the ground around him increasing.

"I am Fliegenda, Champion of True G0d and the last goblin from the Deep hole, introduce yourself as is custom."

The barrier began solidifying around them, and everything alive that was not them began to run.

Darkness ascended and blocked out the sky, as the Scarecrow's shadow seemed to grow around it.

"I am Bernhard, Champion of Bernd, God of harvest and protection. I created the Berries from the corpses of my enemies, and you shall be the next!"

As the scarecrow hit him with a scythe, it barely dug into him at all, the weapon clinging as it hit solid stone, and its wielder's movements where slowed down due to the new heaviness he experienced.

As Bernhard got ready to swing again with his now unbalanced weapon, Fliegenda once again became a breeze and dashed forward using jet legs, the sudden reduction in weight on the quickly accelerating gust almost enough to throw the scarecrow to the ground, and again, it hit Fliegenda with its scythe and release a small chunk of his petrified skin.

"You are losing, and all I did so far was to hit you with a scythe, manually."

The scarecrow taunted, preparing something as Fliegenda repeated the process from before. This time however, the scythe slicing through him hurt, and as he materialized as a statue again, he saw a part of him that stayed as bleeding flesh.

When he did it again, that part did not turn into air and he was hit again. Thus, with two bleeding gaps in his skin, he tried his best to hit his enemy with a grounding, restful petrification and tag stomp combo, hitting his shoulder and staying as a statue.

"It is time to end this, goblin scum."

The reaper said, throwing Fliegenda to the ground and standing above him.

"There is no way for you to survive this, even if you kill me, so... give up and work for me."

Fliegenda grinned as his blood became less and less, and as he did his best to turn completely to stone, he focussed tag stomp five times on his foot, while keeping restful petrification and ground bound active.

The guy did not care, still awaiting Fliegendas as his foot smashed into the strawmans head with a lot of power, the magical weapon slicing cleanly through the creature, stunning it for a second that Fliegenda used to go feral on the guy.

When a person does not care about the damage to their own body, they can exert impressive amounts of force.

When that person is capable of speeding themselves up and turning themselves into air and stone, they can be quite dangerous in the amount of power they can unleash.

Thus, Fliegenda going feral involved switching his own body between air and rock, activating groundbound and taglock around like crazy and ripping apart Bernhard and himself at the same time. At that point though, all that still worked where Fliegendas stats and the command to tear the strawman apart, and scattering the dead grass he was made of into the wind.

As the final form of Fliegenda dissipated, a final system message appeared.
