A young boy of 17 was walking in a cave. He was well-built, a bit tall for his age, and was quite skilled with a sword. Did I mention he had a sword? Well not only a sword, but he was also wearing some knight armor. He had spiky, ginger hair that pointed out in all directions like he was an anime character. He had light skin with a few red freckles on his cheeks. His blue eyes occasionally seemed to flash with a bit of lightning. But for now, they were undeniably focused on something.
He was just walking in the cave when he found a treasure chest. These chests were usually left behind by either gods wanting to reward adventurers or other adventurers trying to store something for later, and looking at how out in the open the chest was it was likely the former. Chests left by gods tended to have powerful items inside and even if that wasn't the case they could usually be sold for a high price. He opened the chest to get the item inside but the chest turned out to be a mimic; a monster type that pretends to be a chest to trick adventurers into getting close. Gaining a sharp row of teeth and large yellow eyes, the mimic got the jump on the adventurer, biting him and removing a large chunk of HP. The adventurer retaliated with a few slashes but it could hardly damage the mimic’s natural armor.
The adventurer stepped back and shot some electric bolts at the mimic. The mimic scurried around, avoiding each one and closing the gap between them. When the mimic was close enough, however, the adventurer used that chance to charge into it with a large slash.
It failed.
The mimic wrapped its long tongue around the boy and ate him.
The mimic then went back to mimicking a chest. Apparently, a few years later it leveled up so much that it became a god, but that's not the focus of this story. Besides, a mimic becoming something many humans couldn’t be was just sticking out a middle finger to humankind.
But that wasn’t the important thing. The important part is that this boy was the older brother of a young kid with spiky, black hair named Stercus. I don’t know why he was named after the Latin word for poop according to Google Translate, but that's not important. This boy had always looked up to his older brother. His brother had always dreamed of becoming a god. With his brother dead, Stercus decided to adopt his dream and become a gangstar… I mean god.
His brother died when he was 9, but you could only become an adventurer at the age of 13. So after his 13th birthday celebration, Stercus went out into town towards the adventurer's guild. Outside of his home was what many would consider to be your average fantasy town, which is basically medieval Europe but with some magic. You have the wooden cottages on the sides of the road, the well in the center where people come to fetch water, and even the kids playing around with their baby unicorns.
This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.
It wasn't long until he found the adventurer’s guild: an old stone building that was as tall as two cottages stacked on top of each other. Despite the old and mossy outside the inside looked brand new, with floors so polished you can see your reflection and walls sparkling with what appeared to be crystals lining it. The guild also doubled as a bar, which Stercus couldn’t use because he was too young. Apparently in this world, 13 isn’t old enough to drink but it sure is damn old enough to risk your life just for a small monetary fee.
This didn’t dawn on Stercus though. He had only one goal in mind: get to level 100. He walked up to the receptionist's table with it in mind.
“Good afternoon young man,” the lady at the table said. “What may I help you with?”
“I want to register to become an adventurer,” Shit (I meant to say Stercus but I can't be bothered to edit it) replied.
(Actually, according to Google shit in Latin is stercore. Ah, the more you know.)
“Okay then,” the receptionist replied. “Just let me see your status then.”
She put her palm on his forehead and did a little chant. Her vision went dark before a bright status screen appeared in front of her. This screen was only visible to her and had a record of all of Stercus’ stats, as well as his level, age, and any spells he knows. What she found though, was surprising.
You see, while being an adventurer allows you to get money by killing monsters, it's not as if you had to be an adventurer to do so. Because of that, most aspiring adventurers would train with the weaker monsters like Big Ants or Basic Slimes. Those monsters weren't dangerous to most, so you could train with them even without an adult present. Plus, they were practically everywhere in the fields behind the village, so the average newbie would come in at level 10 at the very least.
However, this guy was unlike anything she had seen before. He had amazing stats and an extremely high level at level 80! He seemed unbeatable...
Okay, that was a lie.
He was level 1.
