Volume 3
Chapter 39: The Last Gladiator
================================
Gravity falls and rises, his irritation coming to a rise, Siva was being rocked like a toy and he was beginning to feel dizzy as the monster tightened his grip on him.
If it hadn't done that, or better yet, if the it hadn't given him pain, he wouldn't have snapped out of his inner predicament. And that wasn't even a humorous patter.
Siva's literally having an internal organ predicament.
"You...!!"
He felt the pain register on his stomach, his mind put its pieces together and used the large rock giant on its face on the solid coliseum floor as reference. His Black Ender, a weapon with an unused «Function» is still on his hands and so he waved it violently for who knows how long it was until he luckily hit the target that loosened his ties.
He felt the real direction of gravity pull his head and he knew he was falling like a bomb right then.
He twisted in the air, an impossible feat as it may seem, but he still did and felt arm sized tentacles trying to grab his left leg.
"Not agai-whoaaaaaa!"
He was thrown upwards and he literally saw what lay ahead beyond the top of the coliseum.
There was a castle not far due north, a town, a winding street with lots of carriages pulled by gentle monsters, then there were people doing their businesses, and finally a hill just before a mountain range.
Until he reached the full height of his ascent, he was in a way twisting his body, shifting gravity around his feet and legs to balance himself out.
And just when he felt that his 100+ meters climb had gone off, the feeling of weightlessness came and so he dived. He stretched his hand out, focusing the elements on where he'd land, just like how he usually does it with the Dragunov but this time, it wasn't for an attack.
He readied his Black Ender, reverse grip, charged with the elements -charged with bolt.
The target wasn't the perpetrator of this ridiculous fall but the center of the mission, the cursed king of ancient Rome. He remembered the conditions for failure and the items for success.
To free the king of his curse, he must be defeated but as strong as he was, it's not an easy task.
Not when there are monsters around them.
And especially not when he's still that strong. At least, if he succeeds in this attack, he'll be able to render the cursed king stunned for a few seconds, enough for him to finish the mission with a powerful blow.
He started to twist his body, using the same principles in the «Lightning Step» -the elements as the track, he guided himself in a diving motion, pulling himself and turned once, and on the second turn, a heavy CLANG resounded in the whole arena.
"What the...?!"
Dust clouds parted, the cursed king in the tentacles in an inverted position miraculously used his shield and sword to carry the weight of his attack.
"Impossible!"
The rattled tentacles loosened and the cursed king slash it off to free himself.
Siva was also pushed as the king shifted his body in midair, parrying his sword and leaving the two of them floating in midair.
But Siva didn't give up.
He used the elements' last remaining charge and did a turn, the shield meeting it and a counter coming from the left.
"Sha!"
A hissing yell came from his mouth as he inhaled while gritting his teeth in irritation.
Using the Black Ender's octagon knob, he met the attack like a real swordsman. He himself was surprised as how sharp his senses were becoming. He could see and feel where the attack would land, just like how he felt it during the last moments of the War of the Two Powers.
The two warriors suspended in mid air did another twist, SLASH!, and turn, CLANG!, parrying, shielding, countering, blocking, and even dodging each other's swing and bash.
It felt so long that the 3 seconds they spent frozen in a point in the air was expanded into trice its length.
When they landed on the ground, they kicked off the floor at the same!
Another sound coming from their swords came and the air between them had been sliced apart. They ignored the cheers of the crowd, they kept on slashing and they were fast!
The Helium spectators held their breaths as a few of them even recorded the amazing fight.
On every twist and turn of their blades, they were each being pushed back, a clear indication that every swing of their swords were enough to finish each other off in one go.
And yet they were not alone.
With every passing second, with every cut he makes, a bead of exhaustion piles up on Siva's head.
He could feel the pain increasing by the seconds, and the seconds piled up to become minutes. He tried to use all tactics he had learned, culminating his experiences in this one bout.
His left hand moved so fast he even felt surprised that he was pressing the right items and equipment on the right timing.
Then he swung his blade, and for the first time ever in this fight, the cursed king dodged that rattled Siva's stolid composure.
His right flank was open, he's going to die.
Death.
Game over.
He's not even registered in the Insurance System of the game because he had no chance to apply for it since he can't even get out of the house.
Doom hugged his consciousness. He saw the cursed king's bloody eyes glaring at him. Emotionless. Like a real puppet, he moved his body in the name of carnage and violence alone.
Is this how he looked like when he was taking down those ants that stood in his way?
Frightening. Morbidly horrifying.
The thought of death came to him as soon as he knew that he missed his attack.
Will his death come here?
Wait... death?
No.
This is just a game. He can't die.
As soon as this train of thought came to him, he started to recall that image that kept him alive. In the car, in that wreck of their car, in his arms, lie the last family he had left.
His parents were dead. And as young as Baron could be at the time, if he fails here, he would also fail not only as a person but more importantly fail as a big brother.
I can't die here.
The blade of the cursed king on his left hand was arching towards his neck.
He stared at it.
He glared at it.
He racked his mind what else he could do.
The giant legendary hammer he looted from Cramer is not a good choice to defend himself on this position. A slight change of his body's position to use the knob of his sword to parry it like before is also not a choice.
What else then? What else is in his arsenal that he can use to at least divert this attack?
A swing powerful enough to knock him back time and time again. In his current position, he wouldn't survive a direct attack.
Then he recalled those who fell victim to his sword earlier. It's the same fate that's waiting to happen to him. Flesh burning in rapid speed with the black smoke flame and then teleported to another place like a full pack of item.
Item.
Ah!
A sliver of hope dawned on Siva. And he smiled at the craziness of this deed.
But it was better than nothing, in this moment of deep thought. Now or never, die miserably or die trying. It was what the protagonists of the movies he watched had always said.
Quick Item Pocket (QIP) is a feature of the game that lets a player summon the items in their without the need to access the Items Inventory manually.
For advanced players, it can be upgraded using a few accessories but what it's actually worth is that the speed of summoning the item is as fast as summoning a weapon from the three default equipment settings.
What he had in there, however, is an item that he'd been using all these time.
Though he used it not according to its purpose, its still an item that defines its name.
«E-Grenade»
A quarter of a meter away from his face, Siva's eyes were focused on the red aura of the white blade. His left hand combed, a spark came. Just when it was about to hit him, the E-Grenade exploded on his hand.
Everything froze, including him. The monster, stunned, the cursed king too!
He was alive.
The sword missed as the owner failed to control its momentum, as given by Siva's missed attack's flow, he too was saved by his downward reversed slash.
But that's not the end of his desperate tactic. There was still a last gamble in this once in a thousand chance of an opening.
Using his Telekinesis, he controlled the elements as his external skeleton, moving his body and right arm to do a slash.
This time, the first ever attack that connected on the cursed king hit his left arm. A gash of wound was made on the unprotected area of his golden armor.
Blood dropped and the stunning effect was lost. Both the monster, whose tentacles swayed wildly in all directions looking for his lost preys, and the cursed king had regained their control on their frozen muscles.
Siva and king jumped away, glaring at each other, the king's sword arm lowered, unsteady with its blade.
But Siva was exhausted, his stamina and manna were on the verge. If he loses manna here, he'd be a goner, compared to the seemingly tireless king with the cursed set of eyes.
He was chasing his breath, shoulders going up and down in short intervals.
"Hehe..." Siva's lips curved into a smirk, the cursed king also smiling, the first time in thousands of years.
"What is your name, warrior?" The king's voice came and Siva felt shocked to the baritone. "As it is an honor to fight a strong warrior like you."
By that speech, his red eyes came blue.
Isn't he supposed to be mute?
He wondered but then he saw that the king didn't open his mouth and instead spoke directly through his mind.
Telepathy? Siva wondered but he thought again.
No, it was just an audio message that came directly to his brain's audio signal receiver through the same kind of system used to transmit brainwaves in and out of the game world.
At least the general knowledge he had stacked in regard to his parents' invention answered that question.
"Siva." He replied, remembering late why he did and the baritone voice of the cursed king came to his mind again.
"Well then, Master Siva, it is time to end this duel. You are strong but it's still too early for me to celebrate, for these words are the last of my power to converse with the man who might free me of my fate."
"What are you...?"
"Please, great warrior, free me."
In the staggering motions of the cursed king, he dropped his shield and raised his right hand high towards the sky.
Then there came red aura, orange on the outside like a blazing fire. The smoke aura engulfed the king, his body in red smoked flames. The surging violent aura relaxed, becoming tensed smoke in a regular pattern oozing off his berated stance.
"Save me."
And with the last fading words, the blue eyes came to be red again. The burning sword became white but still engulfed in its red-yellow flame.
He raised his flaming weapon high up towards Siva as the latter bit his lip and did his stance.
Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.
Unlike the other swordsman stance in Terroa, this one stance he used is the one he's comfortable in using. He knew that this last clash will be the deciding factor and he knew that it's also going to decide his fate.
He clicked his tongue, as always, irritation drawing on his brows. Why does it always have to be this hard?
Lowering his sword in a relaxed posture, tip facing the ground, his right foot forward, left foot behind, he grit his teeth as he prepared for the clash.
Meantime the king with the flashing name «Romulus» raised his sword in its final stage. His right foot forward, hips lowered in a dashing comb. Right hand acting like a guide and as well as a stand, the flaming sword's tip pointed at Siva.
He could feel it again, Siva thought, that heavy feeling as if being pressed on his back and chest. He can't feel and explain it well but he can tell what this kind is.
It was an ill intent to hurt the one in front of you.
Painfully. That's this kind.
The tiny moments they spent preparing for the clash is bade in silence, the wind catching through, bringing dust clouds and tense.
At that point, the monster at the side roared violently.
Him and the king did not at the slightest look over that direction, their eyes focused solely at each other.
A cloud of pink gas came out of the monster's mouth and it engulfed the arena with them right at its midst.
It traveled with the wind, reaching their location, and it was late when Siva realized that he's been poisoned by the green snail mob.
The flag of poison came on his vision, the audience on the stands screaming and running away. Chaos began to spread in the coliseum as the uncontrollable pink gas of poison spread out in the whole stadium.
The countdown timer began on Siva's eyes, leaving a 180 seconds limit before his game career runs out.
"Shit."
He cursed his destiny but still didn't look away at his opponent.
And then, at the instant they had enough...
With a slight lead on the initiation of his move, Siva took a step walking forward, his senses kicked in on the max. His whole focus on the opponent who dashed in a straight line, aiming for his heart.
He could tell that the force behind his sword is strong and that it had all his body's weight and momentum of his running leap.
To him, this is powerful movement. A style of those who's used to fight with their life in the art of sword.
Who cares?
A sadistic grin came on Siva and the surprised cursed king widened his eyes upon the sight.
Since when did Siva fought by the rules?
When was the last time he actually fought anyone with just plain swordsmanship or anything...alone?
The reason he chose to fight using multiple weapons is because to make sure that he could adjust to anything that would come his way.
And now that the cursed king had dropped his shield, there's no way he could miss this time around.
"Hehehe..."
The Black Ender dropped, vanished, replaced by guns.
Black and white colored, the twins raised at the target on sight. Siva's front foot was a trick to let the target of the mission attack at him.
[You are inside the Killing Zone. Your defenses are down by 70%]
He jumped back, firing barrages of bullets. Each one hit him, tearing chips on his armor and flesh. The king, cursed by a spell, lost his balance and momentum and he stumbled in front of Siva, rolling as he tripped on his feet.
"Poor you." Siva looked down on Romulus. "The mission said to win with the rules of a duel. A duel is a fight between two warriors but it didn't say that I can't use my other weapons."
He lowered his guns to the silent king, red eyes looking up into the shadow of his killer.
But instead of fear, the eyes said happiness.
And as the barrage of bullets came to the fallen man, the victor of the duel was decided in the match.
Siva stood there, gun pointed at his victim. Smoke was coming from the barrel of Steve. But there came no kind of notification.
The countdown of poison kept on its falling pace.
"What?!"
It should have been completed! The man is dead!
But there was no info message that he completed the mission. When the numbers reached 130 seconds, 129, 128, Siva started to panic. He looked around him and saw that the coliseum view hasn't changed.
The pink smoke remained, the monster approaching from behind him.
He jumped too late when he felt its shadow, tentacles hugged and covered his being. The roar of the snail and its acid poison breath was enough to cause nausea to the sensitive noses.
Siva struggled to free himself but the strong tentacles held his arms. The memory of the komodo lizard came to his mind and the fear of such death crept all over his body.
"LET GO!"
As he screamed, he used an E-Grenade.
The explosion caused him and the monster to lose their movement. Looking at his manna, Siva feared.
Just 2 seconds worth of using Telekinesis left. With a click of his tongue, he struggled, the arms loosening and he cast another grenade.
After the stunning sensation hugged him, he rolled his eyes as he felt loosening himself. With the two seconds worth of Manna left in him, he let go the guns and took out his sword.
"Go!"
He yelled and summoned Black Ender. As he was still stunned, the sword dropped from his hand.
SWOOOSH!
The two seconds manna spent, he was dropped to the ground and fell down miserably on his back. The time of paralysis expired, the monster's movements became more violent.
As it opened its large mouth, Siva saw inside forming pink colored gases.
In his desperation, he threw a Flash Grenade inside.
The grenade exploded but it didn't cause any damage.
It was a grenade used to blind enemies for two seconds and on a blind enemy, it was a useless act. But still, as if he caught a food on its mouth, the monster tried to chew it, giving Siva an opening to flee.
Wrong choice, a wandering tentacle found his leg and he was raised again, upside down. Going straight to the mouth, he tried to swing his sword but reached nothing but air.
Two meters away, he could smell the pungent scent of decay and sewer coming from the open mouth. And it was in there that he saw it.
A dangling short piece of meat at the center of the head right above the upper lips. Its color, a vivid indigo, but can only be seen if you got real close. It was sort of hidden through the set of many feelers that loosened in all locations of its ugly face.
"Arthropod." Siva remembered.
He swung his sword on the dancing meat and the big slug went limp and crazy, shouting monster gargles and bubbling mouth.
Siva was thrown off and landed on his back painfully.
He groaned and raised his head, the monster in front of him has lost control and just went haywire, growling like a child here and there.
But its tentacles were limp, nothing moved except his body and that's when his shell-or supposed shell-did a sudden change. A segmented body that measured about 30 meters, no, even 50 meters, expanding like a centipede came into his view.
Its legs were also limp, the only thing that moved is the prehensor part where the whining child cry of the giant monster was coming from.
"You!"
As the countdown reached 90 seconds, Siva's panic and irritation had reached boiling point.
He summoned his hammer and bashed through its head then used his sword and gave it massive cuts and slices.
After 10 seconds, the monster stopped moving and the last cry of pain escape its mouth. It was there that its green tentacles turned blue, just in time when the king and his followers jumped down from the podium and dug in to eat the mob.
As disgusting as it may seem, the traitorous king had a look of desperation in him as he dropped his scepter and devoured the blue tentacles like a hungry beggar.
Siva's thoughts processed this fast and he jumped in to the king and his men.
One by one he executed them, and left the king on the verge of just about to swallow the thing in his mouth.
"Unhand m-"
A strand of sweat rolled on the king's cheek, tears had his eyes as he saw the look, or what seemed to be the look, passed Siva's black mask.
"You want to live?" Siva threw him to the ground and he kicked off the scepter and pointed his sword on the traitor king's throat.
"Please don't kill me!" the king cried, like a child, his eyes were set to the blue tentacles.
"Lift the king's curse." He said and they both turned to the fallen man. "NOW!"
With the last yell, the traitor king took out a medallion on his neck and he gave it to Siva. As he received the item, the king crawled on to the blue tentacle and eat a whole bunch, ignoring everything.
Siva knelt down, grabbing a tentacle, and enduring to urge to puke, he put it in his mouth, chewed, and swallowed a whole.
The countdown on his vision stopped then it ended, so dragged his eyes to the traitor king, ending his life. He saw the scepter, looking like a treasure, taking it and then walked to the fallen man.
He threw the medallion to his body and a black smoke animation evaporated from his back.
After a while, a ghost rendering of the cursed king appeared above the fallen body, the blue eyed spirit smiling at Siva. It was there that the whole illusion crumbled, coming back to the red moon, dyeing the burning grassy land.
When Siva saw the members of the Helium Guild in the fair distance, they all run away to different sets of directions.
He turned his head to the spirit and the spirit bowed to him, approaching with a smile.
"Thank you, Master Siva. My suffering had ended."
"I don't have time for this. Where is the Excalibur?"
The spirit's face distorted into an expression of bewilderment and it was enough to make Siva more irritated than not.
"I believe, what you are looking for is something that has been sealed in a tomb in my old castle's lair."
"Where?"
Siva's tone seemed to be commanding but the ghost of the warrior wasn't programmed to respond in that prompt and instead proceeded to his set response. Siva was left with no choice but to ignore him, stopping only at the memory of the penalty.
What if the mission fails when he didn't properly finish it? And since it was an S-rank mission with a penalty of resurrecting a legendary demon beast, if he fails it now that the hard part is finished, he's going to spark a massive change in the whole eastern continent.
"I thank thee warrior, for my curse of eternal carnage had been lifted with my defeat in your... tactics."
"Skip the formalities. What do you want to say?"
"Very well. Young warrior, as a gift from your bravery and strength, it is only proper that I give you something worthy of your stature. Please choose."
From the fallen king, his armor shone and his sword on the ground was outlined by a shining white brilliance.
"I choose the sword." Said Siva. It was clearly a hasty decision. He had no time to ponder on these thoughts.
"And my sword it shall be."
With the last note of his words, the body vanished in the moonlit night. His sword was left in the ground and so Siva picked it up, vanishing on the mere touched like the scepter.
"Great warrior Siva, I thank thee eternally for you have been my key to freedom. Please accept the sword of my family and uphold the tradition of strength and power until your dying day. I leave all my treasures and fates of the ones I have slain in your hands and I hope that one day we will meet again. Farewell."
"Wait. Where is this castle's lair you speak of?"
With the question, the ghost stared at the north horizon and he pointed at the direction passed the grassland.
And after that, the spirit of the fallen king bowed to him, disappearing into the night shadows like a smoke of pure white dust.
Siva's eyes were in shock and he saw an almost endless info prompt of items registered on his loot inventory.
Including money, and monster resources, it was all in his Loot Inventory when his Item Inventory was fulled with the registration of all the items.
Their ownership rights were revoked and in their full durability and settings, the equipment, including all the materials he received, numbered in total of 369 items.
A grin emerged on his face but it was only for a short while as he immediately remembered the reason why he's on a rush.
With a quick prompt, he wore the Flight Armor and jumped off the sky towards the north.
All the while he was gritting his teeth, enduring the painful beating pulses of his temples, wishing that there he would see the perpetrator of this trouble.
He kicked again, and kicked, and kicked...
Where to the north, he could only guess, trusting only his instincts and the feeling of his reserved vengeance.
Seconds flew swiftly now and he reached an area where a ruin of a palace could be seen. It was already covered by the thick density of the trees but if not for the light of the moon and his concentration on looking for that place, he wouldn't notice it and would have passed it through accidentally.
He landed quietly and looked around, feeling for any signs of life and movement. He knew that his arrival is given away by the sound of him cutting the wind wall but it was needed in order to reach this place as fast as he can.
But no sound came, no movement nor signs of life can be detected in the area.
Siva peeked out of the place, guns at the ready.
Like an undercover police secretly chasing a criminal, he moved from tree to tree, column to column, until he reached a place where a large used to be.
Through the side where the large olden door's remains were, he peeked inside the large roofless chamber and saw nothing but a pile of bones surrounding a throne of bones, with an altar on the wall side.
With the moon's light going normal, he saw the entirety of the place.
No one was here.
He walked inside and saw in the altar a golden chalice, filled with a jet black liquid.
He summoned his Quest Window, seeing that in his five slots for whatever quest is active, the two quest he last remembered taking was the only ones there.
Hovering his finger, he selected the S-rank mission and saw the reference again, reading the chalice that the cursed king filled with blood.
And when he stood in front of it, TING!

He sighed at the sight of the title. It's not the title that he wanted. Even though he knew that this is a unique title that only exists on super rare hard quests, he had no likes to wear such title away from the only one he intended to wear.
(No?)
He pressed the prompt.
An S-ranked mission, accomplished in just an instant.
Siva felt that there was something wrong but he had no time to ponder over it and so he set aside the thought and glanced at the item on his front.
And it was then that the chalice shone in an instant and Siva grimaced at the words he read:

Right after reading the last line, a gold medallion, same as the one he received from the traitor king, appeared on his neck.
Siva's panic and surprise couldn't be more extreme if he had let his heartbeat get the better of him, he would have screamed in anger and hate. Not only he's cursed, he was also tasked to keep the resurrection of the Blood Dragon God at bay.
It was there that he saw his skin turn black smoke, like the one he saw as the condition of the cursed king.
"SHIT!"
At least, by just a speck of a grain's size, he was glad he could scream.
"What did I do to deserve this?!"
One problem after another, not only he was delayed by so much time on getting his target treasure, he was also cursed like that ancient evil.

"No! NOOOO!!!"
Siva exploded in a fit of rage. He stomped the ground and bashed the altar, he even took the chalice and threw that damn thing on the skull throne.
That's when he saw a shining something that caught his attention. He approached the throne and saw a key in a corner of a skull's eye, only visible on that one angle where he was.
In his mind, the chances of anyone finding this key is at least one in a million, if a million people had been in the same situation as he was after that high risk duel.
He took the key and then threw another fit, summoning the giant golden hammer and bashing the skull throne, that's surprisingly indestructible.
It wasn't long then that his eyes were dragged on the direction of the old and ragged mausoleum. The marble walls and columns had been torn by countless battles against the forces of nature and the doors were open with signs of it happening just a few while ago.
Siva hurriedly ran and upon kicking the door open, saw a plinth of uneven stone and a closed chest beside it.
In the dusty floor he saw countless footprints, with a few even grouped upon the treasure closed chest. Siva burst out into a scream and he summoned his plasma screen grenade, the last one, and released it.
Then he drank two blue potions, and stretched his arms like pushing something.
With a charging move on The Heart, Siva activated the «Call of Thunder» and the whole mausoleum shattered at the might of the lightning roar.
What was left there is the expanding gas from the plasma screen grenade. And so he expanded the whole place again and activated the «Call of Thunder» until he had consumed all the released plasma screen gas and left the nearby forest border burning and charred.
He was chasing his breath when he finished, 20 minutes later.
Jack is nowhere to be seen.
Excalibur is not in its podia of a stone, feet prints were all around the place and there was a sign that the sword had been pulled to where it should have been, from the legends.
"NOOOOOOOOOO...!!"
Siva collapsed on the floor, crying, sobbing, moaning, he was screaming, he as angry, he was furious, he was in rage.
He raised his right arm and summoned the giant golden hammer, and just when he was about to crush it down to the floor, a hand reached out from behind him and he saw Volt wearing a frown.
"Stop it, Dex."
His voice was soft, sounding apologetic and concerned.
Siva released the hammer and it vanished in the air without touching the ground.
Behind Volt was Agatha, Hawk, and Samara, wearing expressions that told him they've been there for who knows how long.
Siva's heart ached so much that he collapsed crying, the girls unable to stand it, hugging him from behind.
"Baron..." Siva cried, his sobs were too deep. "His..."
Aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh...
Siva hugged his arms and let himself be hugged in turn.
His cry was enough to warrant pity, so sad, so painful, so full of negative feelings that the girls felt no reason at all but still went to hug him.
That's just how much they felt his suffering.
At least, for a little bit, they wanted to ease their friend's suffering.
Volt had told them what he realized and so they came there to be his friends.
What Dex needed right now are the hands of his friends who, despite the lies and secrets he hid from them, were still there to be by his side.
