82. Spread of Fear (Part 4)

Countless movies and countless philosophers have said in the past that when the government claims nothing is wrong, it signifies the impending doomsday. Though this statement may seem harsh and exaggerated, it does highlight the severe lack of trust the people have in their government. This news, upon being released by the federation, caused an uproar, with countless speculations and criticisms. Life, in all its diverse forms, seemed to have sunk into chaos.

Despite the fact that the mutant virus had not yet spread in Hero City, the atmosphere felt apocalyptic. Countless people hastily packed their belongings, wanting to leave, but the federal military had imposed martial law. This led to outbreaks of violence, provoking ruthless suppression by the military, causing further chaos in Hero City.

The entire Hero City was in disarray due to fear, with all roads out of the city blocked. Timid individuals had no choice but to stay at home, afraid to make a move, inadvertently sparing themselves. Meanwhile, the bold ones raided banks and shops in the chaos, making the situation even more chaotic. The military had only sealed off the exits, and for the superhero warriors, their duty was to eliminate the mutants, not to maintain law and order.

At this time, the Academic Avenue was the epicenter of the virus outbreak, gathering the largest number of superhero warriors and also being the prime target for the federation's extermination efforts. The notorious Ross, one of the confirmed sources of infection, became more ferocious as these warriors closed in on her. Her rationality was finally replaced by the unleashed frenzy, causing terror and havoc, especially as she was infected with the potent Burning Potential virus.

"Detective Dio, we really can't hold on any longer. Let our brothers retreat! If we continue fighting, this team we've worked so hard to establish will be completely annihilated. Please, leave something behind for our brothers!" A secret police officer, with a mournful face, approached Dio and choked out these words in a subdued voice.

Dio's heart was filled with complex emotions. He had no other choice. Watching the fierce and powerful Ross, even though they had already used highly destructive weapons and were on the brink of ordering an attack, the only way to stop Ross was to mobilize a general. Perhaps as a colonel, he could just about manage to prevent further catastrophe.

"Detective, if you go, what will happen to the mutated students? We can't afford to waste any more time! Otherwise, before they fully mutate, we should..." The man didn't finish his sentence, but his cold, eerie tone cast a thick pall over the entire Hero City.

Dio knew his limits. He was capable of seizing power through despicable means, willing to trample over everyone to ascend, but he also loved this country, the culmination of various ethnicities fighting for a common goal. Yet now, faced with this decision, he felt anguish, clenching his teeth until they bled, ultimately nodding and saying, "Go ahead!"

This day was later referred to as the 'Day of Purification.' Whether one emerged purified or perished, this was a crucial question. However, one person was destined to leave a significant mark on this day.

Suddenly, the air on Academic Avenue was filled with the intense sounds of gunfire, akin to the crackling of beans, and even more deafening explosions could be heard. The towering flames, casting a crimson hue over the afternoon, shrouded the city in smoke. The roar of armed helicopters gradually faded along with the smoke, replaced by the heart-rending cries.

As he listened to the anguished cries, Barrett Walker's pupils dilated suddenly, his heart jolting back to life, beating vigorously. The sound was akin to the war drums on the battlefield. Barrett took a deep breath, suddenly standing up. A new layer of skin had encased the spikes on his chest. Barrett gasped in pain, his injuries seemingly healed, but his broken bones still required external help. Sitting in the corridor, Barrett was drenched in sweat, completely drained of energy.

Carefully assessing his body, Barrett realized that there was no stiffness, and the rhythm of his heartbeat showed no irregularities. Confirmed that everything was in order, he noticed the pain in his bones gradually subsiding. It was evident that his recovery speed was extraordinary. Barrett couldn't resist standing up again, feeling a sensation that his current strength could move mountains and that he was now invincible.

The scene before him reignited the anger that Barrett had buried due to his fury. This transformation, unknown even to himself, was terrifying. His blood vessels bulged under his skin, and his muscles swelled, transforming him into a formidable figure.

No matter how the mutant virus altered the human body, people were still people, not gods. Physical strength was not limitless. Ross was ultimately exhausted, her speed diminishing. Caught in an electric net, the millions of volts coursing through it served as the perfect antidote for these superhuman warriors, leaving her powerless, struggling in vain.

Watching Ross being ensnared, the secret police officers laughed heartily, occasionally shooting at her feet, intensifying her struggle within the net.

"Captain! Isn't this a bit excessive? After all, she was the instructor for those soldiers, and she didn't harm any of us!" Watching the mistreatment of Ross, a sympathetic individual couldn't help but speak up.

"Mind your own business. She showed us mercy, so what? We are federal agents, do we need her mercy? She's already a zombie now, with no connection to the Rockefeller family. So, remember your duties. Hmph!" By this point, Ross's blood vessels had retracted after her energy had been spent, revealing her angelic face. This situation was such that even if they dragged her into a dark room and had their way with her, no one would question it!

A surge of powerful current struck Ross once again. Her body tensed, countless hairs falling out in clumps. She was fully conscious, witnessing the massacre of the students and the merciless crushing of residents by armored vehicles, fueling her rage. However, the more furious she became, the stronger her inner power grew, compelling her to destroy those who were killing. At this point, ensnared and with her heart already dead, she mourned in silence, knowing that if they all died, no one would ever know what had transpired there. She was resigned to mourning more than dying, even as those people reached a consensus and hauled her into a large truck.

"Don't worry! It'll only take a little time, and no one above will find out."

"Even if they do, so what? We can say she was resisting and the zombies killed each other. She sacrificed herself for the country, and the Rockefeller family won't dare to investigate further."

"Alright, let's get to it. A beautiful and noble girl like her, even in death, is worth it!" Once human desires are unleashed and imprisoned in a cage, humans are no longer human, but rather beasts, driven by the desire for destruction and indulgence.

Ross closed her eyes, her mind devoid of any semblance of humanity, the federation, or righteousness. She was only left with guilt toward Barrett Walker, regretting why she hadn't stopped before. But none of this mattered. If there were truly spirits, she wished to guard him by his side, making amends for her wrongdoing.

Roar! A deafening roar caught everyone's attention, even the zombie-infected individuals, as they gazed dumbfounded at the source of the sound. Standing tall on the building, resembling a colossal bear, he suddenly leaped down, crashing onto the roof of an armored vehicle, much like a cannonball.

Unlike his raging figure, his speed was not only not clumsy, but rather swift. He grabbed the tattered armored vehicle and charged towards the large group of people holding Ross. Along the way, bullets and machine gun fire aimed at him, but all missed, his evasion skills were too powerful. The onlookers stood dumbfounded as he approached, showing no mercy. He forcefully dragged the armored vehicle along the ground and slammed it forward, creating a thunderous impact. The heads of those unfortunate individuals were instantly turned to pulp, even more gruesome than being run over by the armored vehicle itself.

"Report to headquarters, a monster has suddenly appeared, requesting firepower support!" His appearance caused a slight chaos in the entire federal military radio station.

"What kind of monster is this!" At this point, Di'ao was completely at a loss for words to describe the man's strength and his astonishment. Could this be a humanoid mech? Incredibly powerful, fueled by sheer strength: "Quick, have headquarters launch missiles, use missiles to obliterate him."

For superiors of general rank and above, using missiles was permitted, but missiles were extremely costly and not necessarily effective. This is why power warriors had become the irreplaceable mainstream of warfare, continuously lowering the cost of war, ultimately leading to the phase-out of conventional weaponry and becoming the true mainstream.
