52. The Leaping Clown (Part 1)

52. The Leaping Clown (Part 1)

Rose was filled with confusion at the sudden appearance of this mysterious figure. She couldn't recall when she had met this person, but she couldn't shake the feeling that this person might be the legendary sniper god. With nothing else to do all day, patrolling the hero city with a sniper rifle, Rose could only attribute it to this sniper god's boredom.

Little did she know, the very sniper god who had already begun to change her mindset was Barrett Walker, who was feeling dizzy and disoriented in the medical room. After receiving a glucose injection and drinking some warm water, he finally managed to ease his dizziness and sat on the hospital bed. Upon seeing Rose enter, he quickly pretended to sleep.

"Everyone, leave!" After entering the medical room, Rose looked at Barrett, who was pretending to be asleep and speaking to someone else, and the medical staff and Barrett quickly left the narrow medical room. Rose walked slowly to the bedside and said, "Enough with the charade, let's talk!"

Caught red-handed by Rose, Barrett felt awkward and stammered, "W-would you like to... go back to how things were before?"

"What's wrong? I helped you out of a big mess, saved you from her, and in return, you break my heart like this?" Rose looked at Barrett with a half-smile, teasing him like a cute little kitten.

"Oh, what about the little kitten I gave you? You didn't lose it, did you?" Upon hearing Rose's indifferent tone, Barrett knew that this strong woman no longer cared about the matter. He immediately relaxed and asked about the kitten he had brought back from the wild.

"Hmph! You're just a student, why keep a cat and bring it to the campus? I confiscated it." Rose's face turned stern at the thought of the cute little kitten, speaking firmly and resolutely.

"You're ruthless!" Barrett looked at Rose's unapologetic appearance, feeling that might makes right. Unable to come up with any harsh words, he could only respond with a resigned remark.

"Good to know." Rose laughed triumphantly.

As Barrett's eyes rolled around, he thought about sneaking into her office after the evening exams, and upon realizing this, he breathed a sigh of relief, trying to act natural.

"By the way, have you decided which university you want to attend?" Rose asked with a hint of concern.

"Is there even a need to consider?" Barrett looked at Rose with a dumbfounded expression. "War God Academy, of course! Do you think I won't get in? I can guarantee that I'll be in first place this time, I might not even need to take the afternoon and evening exams."

Watching Barrett exuding confidence, Rose couldn't help but chuckle. She gave him a good talking-to, "You're being too smooth lately, it's like you've changed."

Barrett, who was drinking water, coughed harshly upon hearing Rose's words. He was almost scared out of his wits. He hadn't even told Barrett about this secret. If others found out, combined with his miraculous recovery speed, even if he got into War God Academy, he would be dissected. Had he really changed too quickly? Or was this woman just too perceptive, sensing something?

"Everyone changes! I used to be too quiet. I'm about to have my coming-of-age ceremony, and if I don't change, I'll be bullied by them in the future." Barrett's words were sincere, but he didn't mention the reason for his change.

"Have you thought about which department of War God Academy you want to enter?" Rose nodded and redirected the conversation.

"I haven't decided yet. If I can get into the best Ability Academy, that would be great. Even though I get dizzy, I don't want to become a bookworm in the War Academy, or do nothing in the Mecha Warfare Division!" The current social structure is geared towards combating alien monsters, and in a society lacking resources, the ability warriors have become the main force. These warriors are categorized under the scientific system, with some having innate abilities such as exceptionally strong mental powers, controlling people's thoughts or manipulating nature, known as the Supernatural Department, and the less desirable Rifle Academy, among others. The Combat Department is naturally the best department at War God Academy, with the opportunity to receive personal instruction from the honorary president, War God Mas Walker.

"What if it's the Mecha Warfare Division, would you still go?" Rose blinked and asked.

"Tch! That's just a bunch of nonsense! What would I do there? The Federation's technology hasn't even produced a glimpse of mechas. What's the point? But I heard that controlling mechas is a hassle. If you learn, a mecha warrior could become a major general. If that's the case, there's hope for humanity to drive away the alien monsters. But it's just wishful thinking, with no sign of mechas even after three years. So no matter how you look at it, the path of an ability warrior is the best. These abilities are innate, they can make you live longer, like having your own house, while a rented house always feels like it's not truly yours."

Watching Barrett's resolute expression, Rose didn't know what to say. Should she discourage him? Even if he gains these abilities or becomes a god, can he still go to the battlefield with his dizziness? Ultimately, she shook her head in resignation, hoping he would come to his senses. But perhaps the academies would take into account his dizziness and not admit him, leading him to choose something more practical. Playing sniper rifles isn't bad either. After all, isn't it rumored that the sniper god can kill major generals?

As the facts became more apparent, Rose's views were gradually changing, but seeing Barrett's determined expression, she didn't want to advise him any further. It was fortunate that she didn't say anything, as if Barrett found out, he would probably laugh out loud. Her knowledge of sniper skills was beyond what was currently known, so why would she need these people who were still dabbling? She also didn't bother to inquire about her own identity as the sniper god!

"Do well in the afternoon exam! That should be your strong suit!" Rose looked at Barrett, who had nothing to do, and said casually, then stood up and left the medical room.

"Oh! Why was it such a short time? Is it that Barrett can't handle it, or is it that you can't handle it?" Barrett looked at his sister, who had come out in less than 5 minutes, and teased with a smile, but his heart was tense, fearing that his sister might show something unusual, confirming that there was indeed something between her and Barrett.

Rose glared at Barron sternly. "Get lost! If you have too much energy, you can go run a few laps on the field to warm up for the 1000-meter burst in the afternoon!"

"Better not!" Barron's heartstring relaxed as he turned and ran into the medical room.

After lunch and a nap, the afternoon martial examination officially began. This time, unlike separating weightlifting and endurance, they were combined into a 1000-meter self-weight burst test: carrying the weight of oneself, the fastest average speed burst within 1000 meters, determining the corresponding ability level as follows:

You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.

5, 6, 7, 8, 9 meters per second, corresponding to Private, Private First Class, Specialist, Corporal, Sergeant.

10, 15, 20 meters per second, Second Lieutenant, First Lieutenant, Captain.

30, 35, 40, 45 meters per second, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier General.

60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120 meters per second, Major General, Lieutenant General, One-Star General, Two-Star General, Three-Star General, Four-Star General, Five-Star General.

Looking at the crowded scene, this was just the martial examination site of the 21st Public High School. Perhaps there wouldn't be more than a handful of people with abilities here. This was why the ability warriors dared to walk with arrogance in the Federation. These were the abilities developed from the continuous exploration of the human body and the Forbidden Zone by the radiation mutation, considered to be abilities given by God or the gods, hence why this era was called the "New Mythical Era".

Barrett Walker did not feel sorrow for his classmates in the public high school. He wanted to become an ability warrior, constantly developing his physical potential and the forbidden zone of the gods. This not only requires talent, sweat, and hard work, but also a large amount of nutrition. If he were not born into a family of godlike warriors with the most balanced and best nutrition, he would not have the abilities of a major today. All of this can be attributed to the solid foundation he built in his childhood!

Barrett Walker was wandering around, taking stock of the students he was observing, judging their approximate abilities. He realized that maybe the best performer would only be a private. Some students were carrying objects of the same weight as themselves, and some couldn't even run.

"Hello, I'm Phil Jones, a student of Class 8 in the senior year," the blond-haired, blue-eyed, handsome boy with a few freckles asked Barrett Walker somewhat shyly.

Looking at the big boy's greenness and his stuttering speech to a stranger, Barrett couldn't help but think of himself and encouraged him, "It's okay, just say what's on your mind!"

"I just want to ask you about the martial test. Are there any tricks to it?" As soon as the boy said this, people around them gathered, as it was about their fate. If they did well and got into a university, they wouldn't have to worry about survival for a while.

"Well!" Barrett touched his nose, obviously becoming the focus of attention. He was somewhat unaccustomed to it but still said, "This is your first time using the kilometer burst method, like opening Pandora's box. Once you open it, it determines your fate in the future. So, don't have any mental burden, fearing that you won't do well. These thoughts must not be there. Your mind is important, and the source of all power comes from the heart, which is faith. Remember, the strength of the heart is the true strength." Barrett didn't talk about any techniques but mainly talked about faith. Although everyone knew that faith was important, how many people gave up on it during the process of needing faith because of difficulties?

"Can you be more specific? Are there any specific techniques?" Phil Jones asked somewhat puzzled.

"I have to admit, sometimes humans need techniques and shortcuts, but these are not the true foundation of human culture. Only by taking one step at a time can one truly be strong. In the process of carrying the same weight as yourself and bursting, maybe after forty meters, you will feel tired and want to give up. This kilometer seems too heavy and too far for you. Then you have to tell yourself, please believe that no matter how weak your body is, this kilometer is just a drop in the ocean compared to the huge potential within you. This relies on your own faith." Barrett looked at the crowd and said seriously. It was indeed true. When he was young, carrying twice his weight, he was whipped by Mas Walker, tears streaming down his face and blood flowing, without any mercy.

"I didn't want to ask about all this! I wanted to know specific techniques!" Phil Jones asked impatiently.

Barrett looked at Phil Jones in surprise. He had changed so much from before to now. Did he have something to ask of him? Still, Barrett answered, "There is a technique, the hundred-meter method! Treat a hundred meters as your destination and encourage yourself constantly. Ten hundred meters and you're there."

"Humph! I thought you were more amazing! It turns out you're just all talk and no action, saying useless and superficial things." The difference in Phil Jones' attitude before and after was huge. At this point, he had completely transformed from being green to being arrogantly dismissive, disdainfully grunting, waving his hand, and walking toward the examiner.

This confused Barrett. What did this guy mean? Did he really think he was an Oscar-winning actor? Could he go learn acting?

Seeing Barrett's ignorant look, a kind-hearted person nearby reminded him, "This is Philip's cousin. He is also a remarkable figure! He has acted in several movies at the age of eighteen and is a star! And his family background is very good. I guess Philip invited him to deal with you, as he just transferred here not long ago."

Barrett suddenly realized. These people were really bored and idle. Looking at Phil Jones' departing figure, Barrett smirked mockingly.

"Here, drink this water for good luck in the exam!" Baron handed a bottle of mineral water to Barrett, winked at him, and then pointed to Phil Jones' departing figure, asking, "What's wrong? Is this guy looking for trouble? Let's go together and beat him up. Look at us, we have three legs, authentic three legs!" After saying this, Baron raised three fingers and smiled suggestively at Barrett.

"You should know that I never hold grudges. If I have a grudge, I settle it on the spot." Barrett revealed a proud and arrogant smile, then looked around vigilantly. Seeing that no one noticed them, he whispered, "Your coquettish smile makes me really want to beat you up. Don't flaunt your third leg too much! By the way, if I drink this water, will anything show up in a urine test?"

"Humph! If you're afraid, then don't drink it. I'm telling you, this is just ordinary mineral water!" Baron said with a righteous air, as if he was not the one who used to steal and cheat, "By the way, how do you plan to settle the score right now?"

"Believe me, that's strange!" Barrett opened the water bottle and took a sip. He felt a strange taste and immediately sprayed it towards Baron. Luckily, Baron dodged quickly, so he didn't get sprayed. "What kind of water is this? It tastes weird! I won't drink it. Here, take it back." He made up his mind not to cheat and to rely on his own ability to excel in the exam, which relieved him.

"Whatever you say!" Baron took the water, threw the two bottles of water he had in his hand away, and was immediately noticed by Philip and Phil Jones, who had been keeping an eye on them. Taking advantage of the chaos, they picked up the two bottles of water.

"What's in this water?" Phil Jones tasted a little and immediately asked anxiously.

"Humph! Humph! I knew these two had something up their sleeves! This water has some good stuff in it. It's a diluted special energy liquid for federal ability warriors. It can temporarily stimulate human potential. This stuff will evaporate with sweat and won't show up in a urine test. Good stuff!" After saying this, Phil Jones drank a large mouthful.

Phil immediately snatched the other bottle from his henchman's hand and drank it in big gulps.

"Big brother, save some for us!" Seeing the two big shots enjoying themselves, the few henchmen immediately became anxious. You must not drink it all. We are willing to follow you just to get some leftovers, right?

"Get out of the way, you guys are not worthy." The taste was nothing like what Barrett had said, and even if it was, it was very faint. Such good things could only be enjoyed by them. Almost simultaneously, Philip and Phil Jones impatiently said.

After drinking this diluted energy liquid, the two of them felt sweaty all over and felt great. Their confidence soared. Seeing Barrett and Baron, they immediately approached them with a large group of henchmen.

Barrett did not know that the things he had thrown away had been picked up by these two, and they knew the inside story. Looking at the nervous appearance of the people in front of him, he couldn't help but feel a little nervous. After all, this time, his goal was to be the top performer in the exam, to face this world with the best results, and to declare to them that he was not weak. He wanted to show those who used to look down on him.

"Hey! Are you brave enough to accept our challenge in the name of the War God Treaty?" Seeing Barrett's nervous look, the burning flame in his heart blazed even more, and Phil Jones asked.

Barrett looked at Phil Jones and Philip for a long time before slowly saying, "I understand the War God Treaty better than you. I hope you will think carefully before coming back."

"Why are you afraid? Afraid of becoming our eternal follower after losing?" Philip incited from the side.

"Remember, you and I once had a bet, although it wasn't binding, but please shut your dog mouth!" Barrett disdainfully glanced at Philip and then looked directly at Phil Jones, saying, "Fine! In the name of the War God and my lifelong honor, I accept your challenge. With a follower like you, or to use feudal terms, a slave wouldn't be bad."

The War God Treaty, in the new mythological era, anything related to the War God would be legally protected, so not many people dared to easily sign the War God Treaty, as it was so heavy.
