Lone man stopped, glanced at you, and said, "The worst you can imagine."
You wanted to ask him if he was okay, but as if he could read your thoughts, he waved his hand without looking at you and said, "You don't have to worry about me or feel bad. I've been living like this before you and your parents were born. I'm pretty used to this gloomy atmosphere." He stopped walking. "Well, I mean, it's not as gloomy as it was before you arrived here, so..." His voice trailed off. He rubbed the back of his head and started walking fast. "We better keep going now!" He chuckled nervously.
