Chapter 77: Politics and Comradery

After he decided to steal the shelter’s new gen weapons, Gbenga told 16 of them about his plans, they went to the armory of the underground shelter to steal weapons and found their teacher, Bola, there she also planned on stealing weapons; she didn’t want to experience the hopelessness she experienced after meeting Jade.

They went away from the underground shelter and lived in the no-man’s land. They lived everyday by hunting undead and eating them and life was good, they were growing stronger, they had asked the IP a lot of question and since they treated the IP as a game system they had asked for information on the special rewards a month into their stay and discovered that they could evolve into superior High Humans, but getting the required encode was way harder.

Except for Bella, who already had Pinnacle intelligence and evolved into a (Superior) High Human without hassle. They were all jealous and worked hard to get a superior evolution.

They decided to give one person all their acquired en-code to quickly improve their group’s strength which worked wonderfully, creating a virtuous cycle as the more people evolved the quicker others could. It only took 2 weeks for all of them to evolve. 3 weeks after they all evolved they met other people apart from themselves.

They people the met were from the underground shelter, there were 62 of them. The leaders of the shelter had decided to move people batch by batch, but the undead were getting smarter and used to their escape tactics so the last of the leaders left without some of them.

They had been surviving on their own with the little weapons left until they met the class. The class members decided to join them and soon discovered some anomalies; they hadn’t all evolved and those that had evolved were not superior. This fact was unusual to them since they had done it so quickly they expected that the large group would have succeeded.

The large group was made up of adults ranging from 20 – 40 years of age. There was a hierarchy among them which eventually caused disagreements since their hierarchy worked with those that had evolved at the top and those that hadn’t at the bottom.

Those who had evolved did their best to prevent those who hadn’t from evolving by taking protection en-code from those who hadn’t evolved. This system kept them in power and allowed them to grow without much danger.

At first the members of the class were appalled by the system of the adults and tried to help those that hadn’t evolved to evolve. Bola, the teacher was against the idea but since it was a majority ruling she didn’t get her way.

At first they got the 54 people that were yet to evolve and told them of how they did theirs with team work and found it quite easy to get superior evolutions. The class expected that since they had a bigger group they would be able to evolve even quicker.

The first problem was that unlike them who were kids, the minds of the adults in this group had not adapted to their new world as quickly as their young minds had. They were very averse to facing undead and got scared and discouraged easily.

In this negative atmosphere the adults resorted to cheating and lying; not sharing all the en-code that they had and claiming that they got lesser amounts of en-code than they actually got. This was due to the lack of comradery with existed among this group of adults, unlike the class with had survived their encounter with Jade together and grown stronger mentally together through that and had the goal of never being in that situation, the adults were not as closely knit.

The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

Lies, deception, factions, politics and other factors came to play in the distribution of en-code and some of the adults started asking for the person who they were all supposed to give en-code to for evolution to change, saying that the person planned on going back to the old group after they evolved.

Regardless of the truth of the situation the class persevered through the lies and trickery and then the person they had chosen for evolution evolved after a week of hunting. But the person did not become superior; the person noticed the group’s reluctance to share their en-code so the person stopped improving their stats and just went for a normal evolution since it was better than nothing.

This incident worsened the situation of the adult group and the adults began to return to their former leaders; their efforts had failed magnificently. On seeing their failure, the former leaders consoled the class and told them that they foresaw such a problem was why they made such a system of governance.

The head of the group said “Hierarchy is a very important part of human society, everyone believes in equality, at least on the surface, but rarely do you find a group where the individuals truly see each other equal. The bigger the group the harder it is for people not to create factions and parties. A hierarchy gives people a goal, a purpose, a path”

The leader asked that the class members stay with them so that some of their comradery could rub off on their group. They agreed.

Bola did not oppose their decision this time since they didn’t especially seek her opinion for this issue even after their previous failure she felt they hadn’t experienced enough failures for them to take her seriously.

Over 2 months of cooperation, the large group infected the class with their ways and some of the class members decided that they wanted to take the protection en-code which the leading members of the large group collected. Gbenga slowly saw the great team he had made crumble because of greed. They refused to work together anymore and a lot of problems ensued.

This was mostly because of the temptations of the adults that hadn’t evolved. They gave sexual favors to the hormone filled teens and put ideas in their heads that made them doubt the benefit of staying in their class group.

Ironically, the job of the class of teens was mostly to baby sit the adults that hadn’t evolved while they hunted. The first mistake was that Gbenga refused to receive compensation from the adults for their service so that his group wouldn’t enter their protection en-code cycle. This worked against him as the class members felt they were wasting their time and energy for no reward.

The second mistake was that Gbenga allowed his group to socialize with the adult group, he underestimated the power a simple discussion could have. This allowed the class members’ minds to perceive that they would have a pleasant life if they adopted the same system as the adults. They saw what the leaders enjoyed for little to no work while they suffered even though they contributed the most.

The final mistake was caused by Gbenga’s rigidity. He refused to change the initial rules of the group causing the group to segment.

Then one night, Bella told him something she discovered but had kept hidden; the discord in their group was planted by the leaders of the large group. They made some of the low ranking members appeal to the members of the group that they felt were weak minded with sexual favors and other gifts. The members had succumbed to the temptation and had now gone the other way.

The reason Bella told him now was that they were planning to kill those who still supported him by abandoning them in the heat of a hunt (raid). There were 7 members who hadn’t fallen for the temptations of the large group’s leaders in total. Bella and Gbenga told them and they made a plan.

They turned the large group’s plan against them and ran away from their positions when they went on the raid. The large group found themselves trapped behind enemy lines without 7 of their most essential fighters and died. Surviving with only 7 people was way harder but they managed somehow.

They eventually noticed something, something they couldn’t stop; the undead were getting stronger. Just like them the undead were getting better and soon the island which had many small monster territories and no-men lands, had only very large monster territories and few no-men lands. The territories became nigh impossible to raid and they lost 2 members of their group along the way.

They had been looking for a way to escape the island since then
