Chapter 69: Solo Mission

After that the group dispersed and Mira went to the special reception for Rank 4s and looked at the available solo missions.

She needed something to take her mind of the retirement of Funmi from Pentagon. Funmi was not only leaving the team, she was going to relocate to the new territory the sanctuary had acquired. The new territory was a reward for all those who participated in the campaign. It was to be split into various sections for each of the participants to own.

Jola’s company had the biggest section of land and he gave about 60% of his section to Funmi as a part of the payment for the spell. He promised to give her all the man power needed to start the company as well as some of the required materials, all of the required equipment and 5 million en-codes per year for 10 years as payment for the spell. This was all in the contract he signed with her.

Mira was desperate for something that would occupy her. She looked through the list of solo missions:

…]

The work missions were there; missions that didn’t involve killing undead. Funmi had told Mira that low Ranks didn’t use gyms at all as they usually trained by doing work missions earning en-code and stats at the same time. But for Rank 4s the amount of work missions reduce as their help is better placed killing undead.

Mira, looking at the miscellaneous requests skipped most of them; most of them were request from lower Rank teams to work with them on mission with the lower Ranks offering to pay a meager amount of en-code for the service, few of them were specific requests that involved finding lost family and friends or missing objects.

Mira noticed the Victoria Island rescue mission because Funmi had said that Victoria Island was one of the most dangerous places in Lagos currently, with many Rank 6 and 7 monsters, which no one they knew of currently could beat. Mira felt this was a mission that could truly challenge her, Funmi said that she only got a glimpse of Karma’s a bitch when she was attacked by 3 Rank 4 undead simultaneously.

Mira was sure that Rank 4 monsters would abound in such places and that unlike Funmi, if she encountered 3 Rank 4s it would only cause her to expend her energy more; her life wouldn’t be in danger and if she decided to run she would only spend minimal energy. She needed a greater challenge.

Mira went out of the SSC and went toward a small building with a downward arrow on it and a feet symbol, she learned that these buildings were the entrance to the underground part of the city, for some reason not many people exited or left through these places except for when there was a big event like the raid.

Mira entered the building and there was a dimly lit downward staircase that was very wide and very high, there were some guards in the building. She walked pass them and went down the stairs.

Her first impression of the underground city was ‘Bright’. It was very well lit unlike the stairs would have you think. The underground city was a giant slanted tunnel that had buildings at the edges and bridges that connected to buildings that hung in the air of the tunnel.

Mira looked around and found that there were many work places in the underground the clothes that were made in the store she went to, she found out that they were made here. There were many people living here and the place was just as lively as the sanctuary above ground, it was very well ventilated also.

She walked to the address given in the description, asking the people around for directions and got to the location. It was one of the houses built inside the walls of the tunnel. Mira asked for Bosun and the people around went to call him.

The man came back to the house, it seemed like he was working when Mira arrived and had to take a break. The people around here really knew him as they all knew her purpose for coming; they showed appreciation for her help.

Bosun was a round man who looked to be in his 50s, he was a Rank 1.

Mira greeted Bosun and entered his apartment. He said “Thank you so much for accepting this request” Mira nodded for him to continue. “I hope you don’t mind me explaining where I’m coming from?” Bosun said and Mira nodded.

Bosun came from an underground shelter in Victoria Island. There were powerful monsters everywhere so they rarely ventured out; they honestly thought that the everywhere was the same so they hid away from the monsters… That was until Bosun’s daughter, Ife, came to their underground shelter with her classmates, none of them dead.

The people of the underground shelter thought they were very lucky but the class quickly dismissed that opinion. They told them that there weren’t as many monsters on the mainland as on the island so the underground shelter decided to plan a migration.

Bosun was really scared when he heard from his daughter that they encountered the infamous terrorist Jade. At this point in the story Mira’s ears perked ‘He’s quite famous. I would love to meet the children that met him, I’m sure they’ll have great stories to tell about how helped them. Finally people I can relate with, although I’ll still have to keep my connection to him a secret’

But unlike her expectations Bosun and the class’s perception of Jade wasn’t positive. Bosun spoke about how he threatened them with guns and how he used them as bait to escape a monster. He also recalled the things Jade did to people on camera before the apocalypse, making Jade look like a demon, a perspective Mira had never experienced before.

She was shocked and at one point thought they were lying but when she remembered Jade’s troll nature had to agree that it wasn’t too far from what he could do. The story continued, now Mira’s attention was caught.

The underground shelter suddenly lost a lot of their weapons one morning and some of the students and their teacher were missing, including his daughter. They had planned to migrate on that day, they question the remaining students but they didn’t know what happened so they had to leave.

The underground shelter successfully migrated and found the sanctuary after a few losses. The people of the shelter had forgotten about the students but Bosun couldn’t forget about his daughter, he needed closure.

He offered Mira 1,000 En-codes to do the mission, which was the amount he had saved. No one had ever accepted the mission; Victoria Island wasn't a place one could just walk into.

Mira accepted but she declined the payment, she could get 1,000 En-codes far too easily.
