Chapter 73: Nightmare

Mira left the area immediately afterwards. The Rank 5s were alerted when the Mind’s Psychic connection that they could vaguely feel dissipated. They jumped toward the building where the Mind was while Mira left in the opposite direction.

The entire horde was alerted some minutes later. It was a Rank 6 horde so Rank 5s were the only undead they had apart from the boss. They began a search.

Mira knew they must have had a way of tracking her, so she had to keep playing with them until she found out how. She checked the details of the Hive Marquis Mind and found its sense stat to be higher than average minds. She still needed to understand more about the undead.

She stealthily went into a building, climbing walls and jumping from building to building across the crowd of undead searching below and above. She then circled back to a building around the one where she had fought the Rank 5 undead.

She watched as a group of 34 Rank 5 undead, walked toward the building she had run away from. A mind came out from among them and began inspecting the building. After about 34 minutes the Mind found out that she had gone through the horde unnoticed by jumping from middle of the buildings, above the searching range of the undead on the ground and in the blind spots of the undead searching from above.

She had accomplished this by watching the look outs on the roof and waiting for the perfect timing. Mira smiled as she saw the way the Mind found its clues, it asked the Rank 5s to search the area for certain things since it would take it a lot of time to search by itself.

Like all Rank 5 and above minds, the Hive Marquis Mind could use the senses of the undead it was connected to with the psychic link to get information. But it could not locate them when they went too far from its own sensing range, it could only see what they were seeing like they were its surveillance system.

Mira decided that patience would serve her better than haste. The horde probably thought she was a Rank 5 intruder... Now that she thought about it, she was.

Hiding in buildings, sewers, trash bins and other inconspicuous places, Mira slowly learnt that this undead horde was bad at finding intruders but was capable of keeping intruders in.

She had spent 13 weeks on the run from the undead. She wanted to leave the territory but the undead had increased surveillance to the maximum so she couldn't leave without alerting them.

At first she was stuck in a game of cat and mouse with the horde. Sometimes they would catch her and she would have to kill and divert her way out of their entrapment. She learnt the habits of the undead and the more she did the more she saw holes in what she thought was an impregnable surveillance system. The undead also learnt with every failure but at a much slower pace than she did; staying in a dangerous situation had improved Mira’s growth rate.

Over the weeks she never attacked them of her own accord, she just watched. Now there were 6 Hive Marquis Minds and 136 other Rank 5 undead on her trail, but she was like a ghost. They would find traces that would only lead them on wild goose chases.

At the end of the 13 weeks was when Mira started hunting them. She cut a Gladiator down with one perfectly timed strike which alerted the Minds but since they never saw where the attacks came from through the Gladiator’s eyes, like the Gladiator that died, they had no idea where she was, they could only search the general location of the kill for her.

The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

She watched as they flocked to the building where the dead body was. The first failing of the undead is that they always assume a stealth kill was done in close range or mid range first, before entertaining the possibility that it could be a stealth long range.

The undead, to be more specific the Minds were very rigid and unimaginative in their thinking. They didn’t change easily or do random things. If they didn’t have a solution to a problem they would only keep trying to search for one while the problem persisted. If the problem didn’t change they would not change their approach until they found a solution.

Before the Gladiator died Mira was focusing her hearing on the movements of the undead around her, she was so good at predicting them that now she could clearly see self made premonitions of where they would be and what they would be doing as well as the various possible motions they could make in reaction to her actions she could even focus her sense on certain areas where they were.

The Gladiator she killed was in a very perfect spot, she was 5 buildings away and she was holding Night Havoc, it was high noon and there was a line of open windows, that she used as a diversion previously, that lead directly to the room the Gladiator was walking towards, she knew it was going to enter the room since it had searched the room beside it.

She waited for the right timing and sent an aura slash through the line of open windows. The slash sailed silently in a curved trajectory, something Mira discovered could be done depending on how one performed the aura slash, and the aura slash could even spin as it flew if done correctly.

The Gladiator walked into the room and put its head through the entrance, the door was already broken. The aura slash flew perfectly parallel to the wall beside it and with the perfect timing, just as it put its head through the entrance, beheaded it.

The aura slash hit the wall after passing through the neck of the Gladiator. The head of the Gladiator fell afterward. Mira thought ‘The sound of the aura blade hitting the wall is going to alert the undead in a 657.56 meter radius.’ and adjusted her predictions accordingly.

The Minds were alerted to the noise and ordered a few of the Rank 5s with them to check the location out. The Rank 5s dashed off to the building that was already teaming with undead. 7 seconds later, another Rank 5 Predator died, the Minds responded by sending the Rank 5s to the location.

Then another Rank 5 undead died, then another, then another, then another… It was as though they were being attacked by multiple enemies, this went on for 3 hours straight. The undead had no idea how to deal with the intruder they only found dead bodies, no traces, nothing. Then a Hive Marquis Mind died, the other minds immediately took a drastic measure, they ordered the Rank 5s to break the buildings down and search for the intruder among the rubble.

They had avoided doing this as they learnt that any noise they made gave Mira an opportunity to kill them. But with a Marquis Mind dying and with no way to find out how it happened or how to prevent it, the situation had changed they had to change their approach or else they would all die.

The Rank 5s began to destroy the building, but it worked against them as the destruction blocked them from seeing the very finely placed attacks and from hearing the sounds of the attacks that brought the Rank 5s falling to their death.

Throwing knives flew, aura slashed flew, stabs were made, slashes were made and a whole bunch of nefarious things happened while the Rank 5s destroyed the buildings in the area under the Minds’ watchful eyes.

The dust and ruble settled and there were only 14 Rank 5 undead left, the Minds still didn’t know where the intruder was, they looked around frantically, trying to detect traces of her anything that could bring them out of their disadvantage.

Mira was in the place where their surveillance was the least; under the ruble. She dug a hole toward a location close to a Marquis Mind while the Rank 5s checked the wreckage.

The Rank 5s suddenly stopped checking the wreck; a Marquis Mind had died. The remaining Rank 5s were ordered to protect the Marquis Minds; the enemy was too strong for them now. Before the Rank 5s got to all the Marquis Minds another one of them died, this had become a nightmare for the undead.
