42: Evolved combat

“Frogadier, show me what you got!” Oliver calls to his newly evolved pokemon. The frog puts his hands near each other on his side as a blue sphere appears in between his hands.

“Dodge it Fen!” Jennifer calls as the frog shoots out, I’m assuming Water Pulse. Fen leaps to the side as the ball sails through where she was just standing, crashing into the ground a meter away from her last location. “Use Howl!” Fen lets out an ear-piercing howl as her body gains a faint tint which quickly fades.

“Quick Attack!” Oliver calls to his pokemon which gains a silver lustre to it as it becomes a blur. The frog quickly reaches the fox and swings an arm straight down, sending Fen right into the ground. “Bubble.“

“Flame Charge Fen!”

Frogadier pulls his head back as he breathes in while Fens body is coated in flame and she leaps backwards, colliding with the frog before he launched his attack. The stream of bubbles flew straight into the air, hitting nothing, as the flames dispersed from Fens body.

“Again Fen!”

“Dodge it!”

Fens body ignites again as she turns and makes a leap at Frogadier who manages to leap backwards and get away. Fen follows the frog, moving slightly faster but not able to keep up with the evolved pokemon.

“Frogadier, Water Pulse!”

“Dodge it Fen!”

A ball of water formed between Frogadier’s palms and launched towards Fen as she bounded to the side. But she wasn’t fast enough as the orb collided with her side, creating a small explosion that launched Fen backwards. She spun once before landing on all fours and while she did seem injured, she was still able to keep going.

“Fen, Flame Charge again!”

“Water Pulse!”

Fen runs at the frog as her body increases in speed and becomes coated in flames while a water sphere manifests in between Frogadier’s palms. As the fox approaches at an increased rate, Frogadier sends the shot towards his opponent. Just as the shot is about collide, Fen sidesteps the orb and causes it to miss as she continues her charge.

“Bubble!”

Frogadier fires off a stream of bubbles at the fox which she manages to dodge again.

“Keep at it Frogadier!”

“Get him Fen!”

The evolved pokemon starts firing a stream of bubbles towards the approaching fire type who starts struggling to get close as the attack needs to travel less and less as the closer Fen is.

“Come on Fen!” Jen cheers at her pokemons so far successfully dodging. Fen eventually couldn’t approach as the constant stream of damage was getting too precise.

“Ember!”

“Water Sphere!”

Fen leaps towards Frogadier as she sprays embers in his direction. Frogadier just took the hit as he generated a blue orb which he launched. As it flew through the stream of embers, it exploded in a cloud of steam. The last thing I saw was both standing their ground as the mist covered both of their forms.

A light suddenly started appearing in the dissipating fog from Fen’s side. A shifting form was suddenly visible as it grew larger. The fog becoming less dense showed a glowing blue figure. A second later, the light vanished, a force pushing the mist away, revealing a braxien. Frogadier was also visible now, but he laid on the ground unconscious.

“You evolved!” I hear Jennifer happily yell as Oliver just looked surprised. I guess it is odd that both their starters evolved back to back. Actually, I wonder how often the whole evolution during a battle is? I would imagine it is fairly uncommon but what do I know.

“You did well Frogadier” Oliver says as he returns his injured pokemon before grabbing another ball. “Your turn Aron!” He yells as he tosses the ball high into the sky and it opens by itself, beaming out Aron into the arena. “Ready sis?” He asks to get a nod from the other twin.

“Ember!”

“Aron, Dig!”

Braixen slides the twig out from her tail, causing the end of it to ignite and she swings it out in front of her, sending a shower of burning embers towards Aron. The steel type swiftly digs a hole into the ground and manages to dodge the burning wave.

“Make yourself hard to hit Braixen!” Jennifer yells to which her pokemon swiftly starts moving around. I look over to Olllie who only had a smirk on his face as the fire type flits about. The fire type hops around for a solid minute while becoming more and more cautious. Once the fox moved next to the hole that the iron pokemon first went down.

“Now Aron!” Oliver yells. Braixen reacts before her trainer and leaps upwards as Aron shoots from the hole while three large bolders are uplifted from each side, surrounding the leaping Fen. The wide eyes on the fire type of surprise were mirrored on Jennifer and both fail to react in time. The tree rocks collided with Fen in the center as Aron collided with the fox to add that extra bit of damage.

“Fen!” Jennifer yells as the scene unfolds. The three boulders fell down and spread apart enough to see Fen lying unconsciously among them while aron walks away with a few marks but otherwise, he is fine. I guess type advantage can really make a big difference when it comes to a battle. Jennifer quickly runs into the arena to check on her pokemon and I notice Oliver’s smug look of victory turn somewhat upset from looking at his sister.

Jen arrives at the boulders and manages to slip into the crack to check on her pokemon. She spends a few seconds in there before a red light causes the pokemon to vanish and she steps out. Oliver returns Aron and goes to his sister and they shake hands before leaving. As they left the fenced area, the ground seemingly absorbed the rocks and repaired itself. Which is, odd, to say the least. But once the twins reached where Lumi, Sune, and myself were watching from, we headed off. Once we reached the edge of the grassy park, I looked back and standing beneath a tree was the latias in her human disguise, waving, before vanishing. I wonder if she will show back up? And thinking back, what about team rocket? This is the second time I’ve crossed paths with them.

I swear to god if I have to keep dealing with them. I’m going to, I don’t know. I JUST DON’T WANT TO DEAL WITH THEM AGAIN FOR FUCK SAKES!

The walk through the busy streets back the pokecenter was fine until we reached the centre when a sudden bump on my side and a light grasp followed a by the happy squeal of a very young girl.

“SHE IS SO SOFT!” I turn to look at who yelled that and see a probably 3 year old girl with blond hair, a pink dress, and pigtails, hugging me who swiftly joined by another, similarly aged child in the same outfit expect with a light blue dress. Both of my adopted vulpine kids hide on my other side, staying near me but not wanting to be touched by the two girls.

Are you right there? I say to the two girls who just squeeze the little bit tighter at my voice.

“Its not very nice to do that.” Jennifer says in a soft voice to the young girls as she crouches down. “You should ask if you can play with a pokemon because they might not want to get suddenly hugged.”

Both girls let go and step back, looking upset. “We are sorry.” The girl with the pink dress quietly says. “She just looked so nice to hug.”

Why does everyone think that about me? I shyly said to myself.

“Where did you two go!?” A woman called out to which both girls both ran back in the direction the voice came from.

“And its because you are Shade.” Jennifer replies to my question as she stands, and we head into the centre. I glare in her direction, while she just smiles.
