30: A City and a Question

30: A City and a Question

What do you mean exactly by ‘you can understand shade’? I ask, trying to work out what’s going on.

“I mean I just understood, word for word, what you said.” Jennifer replied.

“How is this even possible!?” Oliver unintentionally yelled while raising his hands. Jennifer tensed at this, squeezing me again!

How is this possible? As far as I know, there was never anything like this in any of the pokemon law. I guess there was situations where trainers would respond to their pokemon, but they could normally do that because of the situation. I guess this world isn’t identical to any official pokemon knowledge that I know.

“Okay, we need to figure this out.” Oliver says as he sits on the ground. “So, you can understand Shade as if she was speaking fluent english?”

“Yes.” She shyly responds, constricting me even more. “She sounds like a normal human being.”

Can you loosen your grip a bit. I somewhat struggle to say.

“Sorry.”

“Okay.” Oliver says grabbing his phone and starts typing. We all sit in silence, waiting for Oliver to find us something. Jennifer’s body curled up and hugged me lightly as I just stayed there, processing the fact that people could perfectly understand pokemon. The minutes rolled into the hours as we sat there, Oliver still searching for information before a ringing is heard. Jennifer lets me go and heads over to her bag and pulls out her phone. She accepts the call and lifts it to her ear.

“Hello?” She responds. She holds it next to her ear for a moment before holding it out and touching the screen. “You should be on speaker now.’

“Wonderful!” Says a male voice, clearly excited about something. “I hope you buy that umbreon of yours a solid gold throne because this is just amazing!”

I look over to Oliver confused and then back at Jennifer, he didn’t seem to know who was on the phone as well.

“Why? Who is this exactly?” Jennifer says warily.

“Oh, sorry, my name is Dennis. I’m the guy who got you lot out of the hole. You gave me your number in case something came out of that wall your pokemon spotted.”

“Oh, hello again!” Jennifer now cheerfully responds but I notice its somewhat of an act. “So did something come of it?”

“Did it ever! It is a literal ancient underground city!” The ranger basically yells.

“I’m sorry, what!?” Oliver yells as he jumps up and grabs the phone. “A city?”

“Yes!”

“An underground city?”

“Well unless I am completely out of my mind, I have no idea what else to call what I saw.” Dennis sarcastically responds.

My mind zones out to try and think what that location could possibly be but I come up with nothing. I cant recall any underground ancient cities in any of the pokemon media. I mean, it isn’t like it is impossible. When you have pokemon able to help dig it out, carry materials, and supply air flow and water before any modern technology was available, it wouldn’t be impossible. And I guess I am quite some time after any of the timelines that franchise was set in.

There honestly could be so many structures like this, hidden away and surviving the centuries, that were built many years ago! Hell, some could still be inhabited. I guess my knowledge of my new world isn’t as thorough as I thought it would be. I just sigh and tune back into the conversation.

“..ou even know what this could mean?!” Oliver yelled in excitement. “We could have just found so much of the Kalos’ regions history, all in one place! Who have you told about this?”

“Well I only just left the cave and called you so as of this moment, only you two.” He responds. I just picture him rubbing his hand on the back of his neck in shame.

“Well thank you for letting us know about it.” Jennifer politely responds. “We have other things to do right now but feel free to call us later about the city.” She adds as her face starts going blank again. He happy mask starting to fade.

“Oh well, bye!” Is the last thing the ranger says before he hangs up and while Oliver is over the moon with the city, Jennifer seems to have gone back to the whole, she can understand me thing. Oliver quickly catches on and tries to reassure his sister, but it doesn’t seem to be doing anything. She walks out of the room without a word, leaving Oliver and myself. I know I should follow her, but I’m not sure how she would react. I mean, yeah, I’m not from this universe and I got over it quickly. But I’m me, and not everyone is like me, so I have no idea how long it might take to process for her.

Oliver goes back to his phone, typing in things so that he might find out how Jennifer is able to understand me.

It was into the evening when Jennifer returned, looking confused. Oliver had still been unable to find a solid answer to her, uh, condition? Ability? Trait?

Jen walked over to her bad and sat down and put her hands on her knees.

“I can only completely understand Shade.” She blankly states, drawing looks from both me and her brother. “I needed to go for a walk, to try and think and deal with this, uh, lets call it talent. Anyway, it took an hour or so for me to notice but I walked pass a trio of paras and I noticed I couldn’t understand them. I stopped and watched them for a moment before they scurried off. As I walked along the streets, I started paying more and more attention to my surroundings and noticed I couldn’t understand basically every single pokemon I could hear in the crowd.” Her hands tightened as she began the next part of her retelling. “It wasn’t till I passed the jeweler I got this necklace from.” She lifts her new necklace up. “The it wasn’t just Shade I could understand. To a degree at least.” Oliver’s eyebrows rose at that in surprise, and I found myself being in more intrigued.

“Remember how he had a sableye out the front with lots of jewellery on?” We both nod, remembering the nice stall that the jeweller had set up. “Well, as I walked pass.” Jennifer stopped, struggling to find the words. She sat there for a few minutes before continuing. “It was like I could understand his intention in what he was saying clearly, but not what his words were. Its hard to explain.”

Silence. What do you even say in this situation? How do you respond to someone having something so major happen to them!? But this information, opens a whole new can of worms. How many pokemon can Jennifer communicate with?

“Hey Jen, have you tried with Hoot and Fen yet?” Oliver asks as he grabs his two pokemon.

“I did try with the both of them, but I got nothing.” She shyly admits as Froakie and Aron appear. The two pokemon are both initially excited but quickly read the room and quiet down.

Can the both of you try asking Jennifer something? I ask them, Froakie is confused but Aron does so without question although he doesn’t get a reaction from Jennifer.

Why are we doing this? Froakie questions which draws Jennifer’s attention.

I ignore Froakies question. Did you understand him? I ask.

“Like the sableye, I only get his intention, but it is a lot fainter.”

Can I please have this explained. Froakie demands. I went through what is going on quickly with both Oliver and Jennifer’s pokemon.

The next hour or so was passed in theory and searching, trying to find or figure out if Jennifer is unique or have other people experienced this phenomenon. It wasn’t till Oliver jumped up that the room went quiet as we all looked towards his slightly smirking face.

“I’m not sure how true this is, but I think I got something we can at least start with.” He says while grabbing a latop and loading the web page he found. It was a website called pikipedia and the title for this page was The Legend of the Attuned Pokemon Whisperers.
