17: Unstable Ground

17: Unstable Ground

While the air was nice, the water was getting old.

We had been sitting in our makeshift cover for about 3 hours and this heavy rain was starting to pile up. The flat ground that was lower than anything else was filling up to make some large puddles and unfortunately, Aron sat us in one of these low points although I’m not sure if we started in one. At least we are dry. Actually, why isn’t there any holes where the rocks came from? Same for the gym battle. I guess pokemon don’t like the law of equal exchange much or the fact you can’t create matter from nothing.

Oliver was on his phone, looking through the data we got from the sub while Jennifer had once again deemed me as a toy. I could still practise Puppeteer but using Iron Tail could harm her so I passed it off for now. I had managed to get to copy to use a move! But it had to be one where it could stay still in two ways. My copy had to stand physically still, but also, ehhhh. I guess a good way to describe it would be where the energy manifests and how it does. Quick Attack, Agility, Shadow Ball, and Iron Tail are good examples.

Quick Attack requires movement to use and the energy that surrounds me when using me is, unstable… I guess. I can’t use Agility as while you don’t need to move, the energy is what stops it from working.

Iron Tail is easy to do. The energy is stable, and I don’t need to move to use it. Shadow Ball is interesting. I can have the clone activate it, and the attack manifests, but trying to use it just does not work. It exists but trying to launch it causes it to implode into nothing.

My running theory is that for the energy, it is precision. Iron Tail and Shadow Ball are both smaller and more focused while the other two moves affect my entire body. As for not being able to move at all, I just think I am not skilled enough yet.

I hear a loud rumble before I’m falling. I turn to look down to see the ground gone and looking over, the other three are also in freefall. Looking down again, it’s a small cave that is filling with water.

My vision suddenly is blurry and I slam into something solid and everything is hard to process. I find myself sliding before I feel the water on my back before falling again and going underwater. My mind was spinning around while being underwater and it took a second to balance myself. Righting myself, I cant touch the ground so I look up and swim. I reach the surface quickly to see the opening where water is pouring and the dirt and stone we were on piled below it above the water line but not by much. I look for the twins and Aron to no avail. I can feel the pull of the current slowly getting stronger so I start heading to the rubble that was the floor moments ago. Climbing onto to pile ground, I see the two trainers lying on their backs on the ground, not moving. Aron is nowhere to be seen but Oliver is holding a pokeball with his phone beside him still on and Jennifer is holding an object I cant see but her hand is bleeding.

Looking around, our situation is bad. Water is pouring in from the hole we fell in, one of the rocks we used for cover has fallen over blocking about half it, the water is slowly, but noticeably filling the cave while water drains out a cave on the side. There are a few ledges high up but while I could get there myself, there is no way I could get the other two there. There is also another entrance to the cave in the wall that water is pouring in from. We probably have 20 minutes before the section of dry land is covered.

Okay Jace, calm down, think about this, that’s probably the first time I’ve used my name in a while but why am I on this thought pattern! Okay, what do I have? Aron! Where is Aron? Looking around, he is nowhere to be seen but remembering Oliver had a pokeball in his hand, I rush over and open it up to release whoever was inside.

As the light fades, Aron appears and is already stressed.

Aron, rock tomb, we need somewhere to get up higher or we are going to drown! I blurt out in panic.

Okay. The steel type responds in kind using the move. Large rocks appear basically out of nowhere and after a minute, a stable stone platform with more or less staircase is formed. I grab Oliver as he is the closest and drag him to the first spot on the platform. It definitely is a lot harder doing it when you only have mouth to drag anything with some weight. I head down to Jennifer and started dragging her up and place her in a similar spot before rearranging myself to drag them even higher. Aron was supporting the tower with his move in order to keep it up.

Getting them up the three extra meters was hard, but it bought us maybe 3 hours if the current pace of the water keeps up. I flip over Jennifer’s bleeding hand and see the damage. She had a cut up and down her palm that was bleeding but nothing dangerous.

I walk over to Oliver and sliding his coat to the side, I can see Froakie’s pokeball and I release him.

The frog appears and looking worried turns to see his trainer not moving on the ground and the cave around us.

Froakie, can you clean Jens cut? I ask him. He nods and hops over to her before using a single bubble to wipe over her hand removing the blood and dirt on it before he went back to his trainers side. There isn’t much we can do to cover it so we leave it facing up, so it doesn’t touch the ground. I next then move aside Jennifer’s jacket to release Hoot.

So Hoot, we need help. Can you fly out and head for Santalune City to get help? I ask the owl as he appears.

I’ll try. He responds. He turns and takes off and line himself to dart straight up. He shoots up through the gap and falling water and out of sight.

I lastly release Fen and tell her what’s happening. She goes over to Jennifer and curls up beside her. We all waited there together. I look to see Aron had gotten Oliver phone and his pokeball and placed them next to himself and his trainer but after waiting several minutes, that’s when I released something was off.

Looking back down onto the original ledge, sitting at the very edge of the still rising water on a sharp rock, was what Jennifer was holding.

Broken into several pieces on the ground, with a small amount of blood covering it, was a Dusk Ball.
