24: Electric Beacon

The trip was rather boring after our last campsite but Lumiose city was finally in view as I stand on the edge of a cliff overlooking the city, my rings still glowing with the silver tint. The sun slowly setting to the right of the sprawling city which despite the increasing darkness, the city only got brighter. The city had one central tower, like it did in the anime, standing proudly over the surrounding city with only a few buildings near it that stand tall. The city had to be at least several kilometres from the outer edges to the central tower. There appeared to be four major roads, each one facing a cardinal direction, with hundreds of roads that curve between them to create a massive circular road network.

“Its pretty isn’t it?” I hear Jenifer say from behind me.

Yeah, it’s quite the sight.

I mean, some cities in my old life were massive, but seeing one is very different from knowing it exists. I hear the rushing of wind and look up to see a dragonite flying over and diving towards the sprawling mass of lights, streets and buildings.

“Lets get going so we can get there quickly.” Oliver says as I hear him starting to walk away. I hear Jennifer follow before I finally start to drag my view away from the sight. Right as the Prism Tower enters the corner of my eye, despite the lack of any clouds, a large red lightning bolt strike to top of the tower, lighting the surrounding structures in a red hue before vanishing just as quickly. I look over to the twins continuing their walk, appearing unaware as to the force of nature that just appeared. I take one last look at the city before following the twins along the path.

Despite the late time as it was dark when we finally reached the outskirts of Luminose City, the city was full of life. Hundreds, probably thousands were walking the streets with their pokemon. There were streets performers, dozens of small stalls, vibrant store fronts, and the occasional food vendor. You would think some sort of festival was happening. Well, considering the red lightning that struck the pokemon gym, maybe there is one. What would it be about though? Maybe the defeat of team Flare? In the anime, they attacked this city If I am remembering correctly. Was there any events in the games that might be the reason for the festiville?

The sounds of instruments drew me out of my thoughts as I listened into the song. It sounded familiar. Wherever I have heard it, doesn’t matter. It was a nice tune to walk along the streets to. I noticed one problem though. I had stopped following the twins, and in this dense crowd, especially at my new height, I wouldn’t be able to find anyone.

I started heading in the direction I think they went and started calling out. I couldn’t focus in on any sound as the constant sounds were all around. The only sound I could easily make out was the sound of a wind instrument. A flute probably. It was a constant repeating beat which was quite pleasant to listen to.

I feel a pressure on my left side which quickly went onto my back and I glance back to see Oliver falling backwards as he tripped over me and crash into the ground on the right side. He looks at me before smiling.

“Found you.” He says from the ground. He gets up and leads me over to a stall that was selling various clothing with Jennifer, who just looks exhausted, standing beside it.

“We need a better way to keep track of you.” She says crouching down and petting my head. “I could always carry you.” She adds with a knowing smirk. The surroundings are tinted red again. I manage to grab the last second of the red lightning striking the tower again. Still though, no one excluding a luxray on the roof of a nearby building that is in the corner of my vision seems to pay any attention to it.

It took a few seconds to realise that someone was saying something and lightly shaking me and I started to snap back to reality. I turn my head away from the tower I didn’t notice I was starring at and look at Jennifer.

“Are you okay Shade?” She says with concern.

“You just stopped and started starring at the Prism Tower.” Oliver added.

I look back to the roof and I see the luxray had vanished. Something is wrong here. I look back the Jennifer and nod. Im fine. I say, slightly unsure myself, but at least the twins looked better.

“Lets find a pokecenter or a hotel for the night.” Jennifer announces as she stands and looking at her phone. “Its already eight thirty. And the Dawn Festival still has three days left.”

With that, I’m swiftly picked up and carried so I can’t get lost again. As much as I wanted to just walk, I relented because A, I wasn’t getting away, and B, I would probably get lost again if I wasn’t paying attention. We moved through the bustling streets for what honestly felt like hours, till we found the nearby pokecenter. This one was also two stories tall, much like the previous one we stayed at, but the exterior look far more modern and fit the city aesthetic of high tech. It had large windows that were blocked out, a gray exterior, and the classic red and white logo sitting above the entrance.

Upon entering, it was similar to the pervious centre. A lobby with a lounge, a TV on the wall showing news about various topics, a staircase leading up, and an empty reception desk. While we waited for the person on duty to assist us, I was watching the news when an interesting topic was brought up.

“This is a general notice warning to everyone in Kalos.” The male reported said. “Sightings of team Flare members have spiked as of the last week along with members of team Rocket and Galactic having been reported to be working with the criminals. It seems the last major search for the members of these fractured organisations wasn’t as effective as previously believed. Rumours have also spread that the infamous leader Giovanni has been sighted, but the individual hasn’t been seen in the 43 years since his separation from team Rocket.”

As interesting as that was, I heard foot steeps and turn to see a man in a red and white uniform, white hair, and silver eyes, enter through a door behind the desk and address us.

“Sorry for the wait.” He apologises while quickly bowing. “Welcome the Southern Luminose City Pokecenter, my name is Diamond, how may I assist you tonight.”

“We would like you to heal our pokemon and book a room for two please.” Oliver says standing and walking over with Jennifer and I following behind. The twins and I part as I go to the healer with Diamond and do as im told. Sitting upon the external healer, Diamond starts to speak.

“Saph did mention a unique umbreon that didn’t have a ball in our call yesterday.” He says as he places the pokeballs into the healer located on the other side of the room. “You really are quite unique. And don’t worry, us healers can only discuss matters like these amongst ourselves to aid in helping people and pokemon.” He leaves the room and I felt a tension I didn’t know I had fall away after hearing that. I just lay on the pad as it works while I practise Puppeteer to waste time.

I wonder what the Dawn festival is for though? I say to myself.
