Talk To Me

“What?” Ben’s words echo through the night as Fiona trembles recognizing his voice. Turning to her right, she sees Ben standing there, staring at her in utter shock.

“What did you do?” she shouts taking two steps aggressively towards Andrew as he steps back.

“No Fiona! What did you do?” Ben shouts firmly approaching her. “Answer me, Fiona! What does this mean?” Ben says now standing in front of Fiona. She looks up and sees not only the disappointment and anger in Ben’s eyes but also the hope that maybe this was all a bad dream. Fiona’s guilt overtakes her as she is unable to talk. “Fiona!” he demands as she lets out makes a high-pitched shriek as if in danger.

“Ben, calm down.” Fiona now notices Ann rushing to him, hoping her arms with somehow comfort and calm Ben. Fiona looks around for an explanation but can only find panic as she sees her husband, standing afar as she feels her world falling apart as he stares at her silently.

“I can explain Oscar,” Fiona mumbles. “Ben please, it’s not what it sounds like.”

“What does it sound like Fiona?” Ben asks.

“Ben please,” Ann although just as shocked by what has just happened, she tries to salvage the situation. “We can all calm down and talk about this.”

“Let’s talk about it right now and all I want to know is the truth.” Ben stands before Fiona with Ann holding his arm.

“I…,” Fiona says. “They hurt you, Ben; I just did what I thought was right for you.” The truth escapes her lips as she closes her eyes tightly.

“Did you hire Nicholas to kill Scarlet and Gregory?” Ben asks as she Fiona bites her lips fearing the truth might slip out. “Yes or no!”

“Yes,” Fiona says breaking down as tears roll down her cheeks. “You were so upset Ben; I couldn’t bear to see you like that. It was all her fault Ben I had to do something.” Ben couldn’t believe what he is hearing. He stares at her silently as his mind was now racing with many questions but he doesn’t know if he wanted the answers. “Please look at me Ben,” Fiona steps forward and holds his face in her hands hoping to get Ben to look at her. He closes his eyes as he begins to cry as well and all Ann can do is watch. “Ben, if she was around, you never would’ve been happy. You could never move on with her around, something had to be done. Please understand.”

“So, killing her was the first thing that came to mind?” Ben doesn’t open his eyes as he says these words softly, trembling with frustration.

“Ben please don’t say that. I didn’t do anything; it was all Nicholas I…” Ben removes himself from Fiona’s grasp and begins to walk away. Ann tries to catch up to him.

“Not now Ann, please…,” his voice told her everything she needed to know. He wanted his space to process everything. She now looks at Fiona who looks completely lost, caught in her own web. She wants to run after her brother but she knows it won’t be of any use. As Fiona looks at her sister-in-law standing there silently, she suddenly remembers, her brother was not the only one who needed an explanation. She looks around frantically to see her husband looking at her stunned. She isn’t sure how to interpret his blank stare but the moment he turns and walks away she runs after him.

“Oscar wait!” she runs after him as fast as she can with Aron, following closely behind Oscar. Oscar walks at a faster pace and Aron catches up to him.

“Sir, should we …”

“Discuss this tomorrow,” Oscar says firmly. Noticing Fiona approaching, Oscar walks ahead while Aron turns around and leaves looking satisfied.

Fiona is out of breath as she runs faster to catch up to Oscar. She calls his name but he doesn’t slow down, until he hears her fall.

“Ruby?”

“Oscar please listen to me,” Fiona says trying to stand up.

“Are you ok?”

“I’ll be fine just please listened to me.” Oscar doesn’t approach her but Fiona picks herself up and closes the distance between them. “You might be thinking some really horrible things about me right now but if you just listen.”

“It is what it is Ruby,” Oscar says seemingly at his wits end. “You just admitted to being behind the murders of two people.”

“I didn’t kill them Oscar I swear. It was Nicholas, he convinced me and….”

“And you listened to him?” Oscar asks. “I thought Ann was insane for defending a killer. But now I find myself wanting to defend you.”

“I am not a killer Oscar, please don’t say that,” Fiona pleads.

“No,” Oscar says. “Even if you didn’t do it yourself, I can’t image what got into you. How could you think this was, ok?”

“She hurt my brother.”

“And Nicholas hurt Ann, but I wanted him arrested…” A silence falls between the two and all that is heard is the sound of Fiona sobbing.

“Why did he kidnap Scarlet?” Fiona looks up at Oscar as he is painfully prepared to hear the truth.
